American Queen Anne Birdcage Tilt Top Side Table, Connecticut, Late 18th Century
American Queen Anne Tilting Tea Table(Antique Side Table or Candlestand) Connecticut Connecticut River Valley. Late 18th Century Plain dish-molded top over birdcage support tenoned over a compressed-ball pillar terminating in triform snake feet Item# 130002YRW19 This is a fine American Queen Anne Antique Tea Table crafted during the last quarter of the 18th Century. Probably in the Connecticut River Valley. Of wonderful form and proportions, this very attractive piece is pure and relatively undisturbed, the finish being the only change over the last two centuries. Characterized by simplicity and a compression of lines, the design carefully balances the visual weight of the spherical top and oversized birdcage by squeezing the baluster as close to the legs as possible, perfectly dividing the mass of the table away from the midriff. The top ... moreis a work of art. Crafted of two solid Cherry boards joined nearly seamlessly, it was lathe-turned patiently and with great risk to the craftsman to produce a raised molded edge of the solid. The cleats are affixed to the underside of the top with symmetrically spaced original and undisturbed screws, these flanking the birdcage box structure that allows the top to spin freely. The birdcage is crafted with complex and possibly unusual construction, four baluster turned pedestals joined into the square(unidentified, possibly pine) softwood top and through the cherry bottom, the latter tenons wedged with splints for a pressured joint. Four iron bars penetrate at an angle down through the top and are twisted under the bottom, giving incredible strength and permanence to this delicate structure. An original clasp on the underside of the top still perfectly grasps the latch on the birdcage, both undisturbed with original screws still securing each(one later screw added to the clasp due to a loss at one corner) The solid cherry pedestal joins through the birdcage. Tapering as it penetrates the structure and is secured in a hollow in the top of the structure, joined with a wedged
American New England Queen Anne Pad Foot Diminutive Gate Leg Card Antique Table
Diminutive American Queen Anne Drop Leaf Table c. 1750-70 New England States. Maple Primary woods, Pine frame Resting over tapered legs and pad feet Item# 120011IQO24 This is a uniquely diminutive and quite attractive Queen Anne drop leaf table. Crafted of solid Maple in the New England States during the mid-to-late 18th Century, probably 1750-1770. The shapely top opens over ruled joints for a clean and broad surface- excellent dimensions for use as a functional card table or breakfast table, folding up as a wonderful hall table or dining room server. In 18th century homes, it was important that dining and entertaining furniture could be used flexibly for multiple uses, both functionally as a useful piece when hosting company, but also aesthetically to enhance the beauty of a given room. This table, with it's wonderful dimensions and ... morefine lines, clearly would have been a desirable piece in most households of the period. Originally this table would have been painted. Evidence still in the corners and crevices of a white paint that may have been the original color. One leaf is a solid plank of solid maple, the top and one other leaf crafted of two pieces of broad maple, all hanging over entirely original hand forged iron hinges- several of the original screws are still preserved in these. The table rests over a primarily pine frame, one leg gating outward on each side to reveal the dovetailed construction of the frame, the legs joined to the gate with double pinned tenon-mortise joints and swinging on a thick and heavy knuckle joint. The legs are perfect turned works, each perfectly tapering into a tiny ankle before flowing into the soft padded foot. This is an outstanding find for the collector and decorator alike- in excellent structural condition. Fully capable of regular use as a card table and serving table alike, this is a piece that if well cared for will last through many generations in your family. Measurements: 37 1/2" wide x 37 1/4" diameter when opened 27" high; leaf 1 = 12 13/16&quo

American Queen Anne Tilting Candle Stand Side Table, Rhode Island or CT c. 1790
American Queen Anne Tilt Top Candle Stand(Side Table) Probably Federal Period. Rhode Island or Connecticut c. 1790-1810 Item# 130003UHU16 This is one of the most pleasing forms we've had the opportunity to carry in some time. The top is crafted of an octagonal solid plank of mahogany. The edges squared and rigid, the glowing grains of a parallel nature to not distract from the overall form of the table. Tilting over the doweled head of the pedestal, this flanked by chamfered cleats with original hand filed iron screws in each, the table locks in a rested position with it's original clasp and catch hardware- both are undisturbed and hold the table for a firm surface. The turned pedestal is the finest part of this table, divided into carefully calculated scratched-bead bands amongst ring turnings, focused primarily over the swollen ... moreturned baluster. The legs are some of the most delicate and well carved we've seen on a table of this form, joining the pedestal in large dovetails beneath metal strips highlighted by rather distinct scalloping. The legs have a high lift, the bold knee swooping into crisply carved snake feet. This is an absolute treasure for anyone passionate about clean and unbroken lines in period American Furniture; the graceful qualities of the form are unmatched and are inspiring. It is a piece you will cherish in your collection for a lifetime. Measurements: top dimensions are 14 3/4" x 21 3/8" 28 5/8" high in rested position; 40" high tilted. Condition Report: Refinished. Two plugged screws driven through base to support leg. Coupled with some cracks and repairs to the base. One modern nail at middle of tri-form bracket under pedestal. Every other aspect of the table is entirely original, including the clasp and catch, and the screws. Simply outstanding condition. The octagonal top is uncommon and very desirable, cut from a solid plank of mahogany with edges molded of the solid. Beneath the table, a chamfered batten stretches across the surface entirely undisturbed, still retaining it's original hand filed iron screws- the craftsman was generous with screws used to secure the top, recognizing the danger only a few screws could pose to the table top when shrinking and expanding occurs. As a result, the top is free of cracks or splits, retaining the same grain display the ... moreboard was chosen for originally. Beneath the table is an old yellowed note. Secured beneath nailed plastic, reading"Frank Morton from his loving mother Mary Alice Smith, Newton Towne, Nov. 15, 1898. while this possibly attributes the table to Newton, MA, parallels can also be made to design elements in this table to Boston and Essex County Massachusetts. The pedestal illustrates the standard design of coastal Massachusetts. A long tapered pillar over the ringed urn baluster. Beneath the pedestal is very attractive and quite distinctive scalloping, first in the legs on either side of the pedestal and followed in the actual shaft. The cabriole legs lock into the pedestal in the typical dovetailed manner beneath an iron tri-form bracket. Identified as a"triangle" in price lists of the period, this still retaining it's original rosehead nails. The feet are incredibly attractive, a bulbous snake footed form with an outstanding profile that shrinks sharply into the tiny ankles of the leg. This is a piece you will cherish for a lifetime in any serious collection- exceptional in every way. It has been preserved carefully with originality preserved in nearly every asp
American Queen Anne Serpentine Top Tilting Antique Tea Table, Late 18th Century
Fine American Queen Anne Serpentine Top Tilting Tea Table In the manner of Joseph Short(1771-1819) Probably North Shore. Massachusetts- possibly Connecticut Item# 130006RUP13 Possibly by Joseph Short(1771-1819) of Newburyport. MA or a contemporary during the same period, this fine American Queen Anne Tilting Top Tea Table is an unusually attractive specimen. The top is an incredibly broad single plank of Birch with a molded edge carved of the solid in a soft reverse serpentine. Generally these tops are of at least two boards, sometimes with a small third board making up the edge- to be crafted of a full single plank and still maintain the original cleats and smooth function is quite a feat; shrinking and expanding can often have dire consequences on the cleats, resulting in a top that is either cracked or too compressed against the square ... morehead of the pedestal to be functional. Surviving in excellent condition. The table maintains it's original untouched cleats, mostly original screws, original brass latch(and period replaced clasp on the square head of the pedestal) and original tri-form iron bracket beneath the feet. The square pedestal head is a block of cherry chamfered along the underside, the pedestal tenoned through it in a square. The solid cherry pedestal is robust with a wonderful swollen baluster beneath tight ring turnings and over three cabriole legs that terminate in raised pad feet. The legs intersect with the base in soft scalloping that works to soften the flow of the joint, these joining into the pedestal with large dovetails. Finished with a glossy and attractive wax over shellac. The worn and oxidized patina of the wood maintains it's preserved glow and character. This is an exceptional piece for serious collectors of American antique furniture. Measurements: 31 3/8" x 31" top width/height; 24 5/8" from foot to foot Condition Report: Fine mellow refinish. Cleats original and untouched. Mostly original hand filed screws still securing these to the underside of the table wi
American Queen Anne Antique Candle Stand w/ Shaped Cherry Top, Late 18th Century
American Queen Anne Cherry Candle Stand New England States. C. Late 18th Century Item# 130008FDA12 This very cute American Queen Anne Antique Candle Stand is simply a treasure. Of quite petite dimensions. It is a piece that was crafted to be truly functional and enjoyable in a room without redefining the space. It was almost certainly made in the New England States during the last days of the 18th Century; crafted of solid cherry, the top is a beautiful solid plank shaped with oxbow corners and an ogee edge carved of the solid. The bottom is deeply oxidized, revealing variations in the surface with the unfinished hand-planing marks still clearly evident along the exposed surface. The pedestal tenons through a rectangular base, this affixed to the top with three hand filed steel screws set in chip carved wells. A simple turned pedestal emphasizes ... morethe graceful flow of the table, again without over-embellishment and in harmony with the choice of cherry and the soft curve of the snake legs. The legs tenon into the pedestal with small dovetails, the feet terminating in pointed shoes. A wonderful find for any period home where a small functional table is necessary for a living space. Perhaps beside the sofa or a fine Period chair, this is a piece you will cherish and enjoy regularly for a lifetime. Measurements: top] 16" x 15 1/2" 25 3/4" high Condition Report: Top has slight warp to it. Visible in the pictures. Dings, abrasions and burn marks throughout, all visible in the pictures; cracks in the pedestal and one old crack in a leg. Finish is replaced, probably 20th Century. One leg is repaired, possibly(though highly unlikely) a replacement- it has the same even preserved patina beneath the shellac as the other legs. Retains it's original screws, one absent. Please review all images in the slideshow for a full overview of condition.
American Queen Anne Antique Table Candle Stand, Cherry, prob. CT c. 1790-1810
American Queen Anne Cherry Candle Stand[Antique Side Table] Federal Period. Late 18th Century c. 1790-1810 Item# 130010AQS26 This is an absolute treasure. A very fine American Queen Anne Candle Stand crafted during the late 18th Century in the New England States- almost certainly Connecticut. The form is simple but excellent, the octagonal top in two boards of solid cherry with a recessed molded edge framing the smooth and undistracted grains of the top. The underside edge of the top is chamfered to lighten and even sharpen the shape of the top against the eye. Highly successful, the table floats with exacting proportions and absolutely no excess. Supported over a precisely turned pedestal, this swells only softly at the middle in a turned ring, based and crested by a multitude of rings before it tenons into the solid cherry cleat under the ... moretable top. The cleat too is bevelled along the edges and affixed to the top with a set of original and untouched hand filed steel screws. The table rests over three ogival legs, each tenoned into the base with a small dovetail and capped with an original tri-form bracket with untouched original screws still holding it firmly in place; the legs snake along in a smooth taper in plain toes, two of these repaired due to weakness inherent in the design. A neat little row of chip-carved impressions circle the base between each leg. With a dry and highly attractive surface under old layers of wax, the patina is finely preserved and quite nice. Pleasing in every way. This handsome table is a very fine acquisition for any serious collector of American furniture- remaining in nearly untouched condition, it will be cherished in your collection for a lifetime. Measurements: 17 1/2" along grain. 18" wide against grain, 28 1/8" high; 21" between toes Condition Report: Two feet repaired. Coupled with repairs to base behind feet(plugged screws) Original bracket, all screws original- hardware and cleat are untouched. Dry surface throughout with some traces of white paint in

Fine American Queen Anne Walnut Birdcage Tea Table, Chester County, PA c. 1770
AMERICAN QUEEN ANNE WALNUT TEA TABLE CIRCA 1770 Chester County. Pennsylvania w/ Birdcage Structure Item# 411DLP29 This rare and very striking tea table is a fine example of rural ingenuity. The distinctive raised tongue along the shoulder of the cabriole leg. The matched turning of the birdcage pillars to the pedestal, the faceted cleats and intense repeated ring turnings of the lowest third of the pedestal are all indicative of a Chester County origin. It remain entirely pure with untouched originality other than a few screws and the finish, which was probably refreshed at some point during the 20th century. The entire table is crafted of walnut. The two board top with four impressions on the back from where it was affixed to a lathe when the top was carefully carved to form a rim of the solid. The birdcage mechanism allows the top to rotate ... morefreely to easily serve tea, this affixed on dowels to the pair of flanking cleats with their bevelled edges and angled ends. The pedestal is a work of art, an intricate but highly robust swollen baluster over deep repeating ring turnings. The cabriole legs set into the pedestal with large dovetails beneath an original wrought iron spider bracket affixed with rosehead nails, the underside of each leg arching then curving back down to meet the base. The legs terminate in soft clubbed feet on a thin blade. For anyone passionate about the creativity and unrestrained designs of rural Chester County. This is an absolute treasure. In a very fine state of preservation and entirely pure, it is an investment grade selection that will certainly be a cherished part of any carefully selected collection. American Queen Anne Tilting Tea Table, Spiral Carved Pedestal, Boston c. 1760
American Queen Anne Tilting Tea Table. Spiral Carved Pedestal, Boston c. 1760 Boston area. Massachusetts circa 1760-1780's View the full slide show on this item here via Flickr: What a superb table. A mastery of early Chippendale/Queen Anne design typical of Boston and the surrounding communities in the late mid 18th century. We are attributing this table to the Boston area, which may include Salem, and Newburyport, Massachusetts. Very fine table. Constructed if solid mahogany. Nicely figured 2 board top, with a spiral carved vase formed turned pedestal, terminating in 3 superbly formed Queen Anne snake legs with nice designed padded feet. Nice warm red colour. With a light shellac finish. We really enjoy fine tilt top tables and this table is no exception. The physical overall condition is excellent. With the wear and dings you would ... moreexpect in a 250 year old table. One of the batons that holds the top to the centre block is loose, and the screw is slightly stripped. This is a easy fix with glue and toothpicks. We can have this fixed for you. We believe the central block holding the top to the pedestal is a very old replacement. It probably broke and was replaced in the late 19th century. We are confident the top is the original top for the base. The legs are dovetailed into the base of the pedestal, as they should be. The base retains the original iron spider and rose head nails to ensure against legs breaking out. No real further condition items to report. Size: 27" round top(26 3/4" by 26 7/8" 27" tall
American Queen Anne Cherry Antique Tilting Tea Table, Pennsylvania c. 1770
AMERICAN QUEEN ANNE CHERRY TILTING BIRDCAGE TEA TABLE Possibly Chester County. C. 1770 Item# 501GKR17P This fine American Queen Anne tilting tea table is probably a work of Chester or a nearby county. The table is preserved in outstanding condition. The restorations completed very competently and with great respect for the originality of the work. Typical of the smaller cherry planks, the upper third of the top probably started to separate from the lower two-thirds from shrinking along the grains at one point, which was healed by routing the back and inserting a splice to join the two leaves from the back. Often this is healed with a line of dovetails, so this is a somewhat imaginative and quite effective mechanism. The gap is completely healed and has resolved any bowing that may have been in the planks. Behind the top, the original cleats ... moreare affixed to the top with a series of screws set in the original wells; battens are spliced on either outer edge of the cleats to also help with what was probably a slight bow in the wood. Tenons projecting from the birdcage into the cleats allow the top to tilt easily, locking in place with it's original brass clasp and catch, both unmoved from their original positions. The birdcage is a work of sheer beauty, the tiny swollen baluster pedestals making up the corners in nearly exact replication of the larger pedestal of the table- even down to the smallest detail of the scratched beading around the midriff of the swell. These tenon through the top of the birdcage and are locked in place with split-wedges. A half-moon wedge slides through the turned collar to lock the birdcage into the void of the pedestal; typical of Chester County tables, the wedge and placement of the birdcage pillars is such that the table can easily rotate a full three-hundred and sixty degrees without touching the wedge or being in anyway inhibited. The pedestal is a wonderfully turned from a thick block of cherry, the recesses showing the alligatored and dirty cloudiness of the retained early finis
