Sad" is an old word for solid/dense/heavy. Blacksmiths started forging simple flat irons in the late Middle Ages. Plain metal irons were heated by a fire or on a stove. Unfortunately. The metal handles also got hot when the iron was heated, and they had to be gripped with a thick cloth. Some irons had wooden handles that did not get hot. You'd need at least two irons on the go together for an effective system: one in use. And one re-heating. Large households with servants had a special ironing-stove for this purpose. Some were fitted with slots for several irons, and a water-jug on top. At home. Ironing traditional fabrics without the benefit of electricity was a hot, arduous job. Irons had to be kept immaculately clean, sand-papered and polished. They must be kept away from burning fuel, and be regularly but lightly greased to avoid rusting. Beeswax prevented irons sticking to starched cloth. Constant care was needed over temperature. Experience would help decide when the iron was hot enough, but not so hot that it would scorch the cloth. In 1870 a detachable handle was patented in the US. In the late 19th century. Iron designs experimented with heat-retaining fillings. Designs of this period became more and more ingenious and complicated, with reversible bases, gas jets and other innovations. Antique Limoges Jardiniere Planter RARE Flow Blue Under Glaze Design 1880's
This is a magnificent and rare piece of flow blue Limoges. This huge jardiniere was made by the William Guerin Co. in the late 1880's. It features a gorgeous design of poppy flowers and leaves that have been painted in the blue Sevres style under the glaze. This technique allowed the blue to flow with soft edges when it was fired. Creating a soft and beautiful image. This is a very large piece painted in this style and extremely rare. I have not been able to find another like it. It is in very fine condition with the exception of gold loss around the rim of the mouth opening. Because these pieces were used to hold floral displays and live plants, this is considered normal ware. There are no chips, cracks or hairlines, and the glaze is in very fine condition.The circumfrence is 42" at the widest part. It stands 9 1/2" high, 10" ... moreacross the mouth, and 7" across the base. This piece was not signed by the artist, but they did leave their ghostly finger prints under the glaze as shown in picture#6. The bottom is marked with the green under glaze WG&Co stamp used before 1891. This large jardiniere displays beautifully and works well with other flow blue pieces as shown. It would look gorgeous on a center hall entrance table, or on the sideboard in a period style dining room. This is a real treasure. Shipping includes insurance and delivery confirmation. This Limoges Cache Pot was given to me about 25 years ago by a 98 year old lady. I do not know any more about it's age. There are no cracks nor chips. Ther is an underglaze factory mark in green with"W.G. Co" within it. Also under glaze is a signature"S.G. Holmes" Whom I would assume to be the artist. Here is a beautiful Original Italian painted and glazed Terra Cotta/ Terre Cotte Planter/ Urn- style piece. It is an Antique that is 100% Original and was done in the late 1800's and is date around 1896! From what I was told by an Antique Dealer/ Appraisal. During this time in Italy the infamous Dictator Mussolini had many Terra Cotta makers sent off as prisoners so there secret of making the famous pottery was not given away as he did the same to the Murano Glass-Makers around the same time. From what I and others can make out it appears to be stamped ANGELO RICCERI with some other letters or words that aren't readable due to a crooked or uneven stamping by the artists but I believe it says IMPRUNETA ITALY. In the middle of the stamping it says TERRE COTTE which is the Original way it was spelled. The diameter on top is 6" down ... moreto 3 1/2" for the pot part. The height is 5 1/2" inches tall. It has a remarkable Sky-like Blue painted around it with amazing designs to go with it in white! Just a Super Piece and can definitely be a piece in your house! Gorgeous Antique RRP Ransbottom Jardiniere RARE Yellow Mauve Floral Design NICE
For your consideration is this gorgeous Antique RARE Ransbottom Jardiniere with stand. I'm calling this rare because of the floral pattern and color combination. I can NOT find another Jardiniere and stand in this color anywhere on the internet. Overall condition is very good or better. No cracks or chips that we see but the stand does show some crazing, as shown in photographs. The flowers are a dark mauve color with the leaves being green and the vine a light brown, the primary base color is a yellow. We are guessing this jardiniere and stand will date to the 1920's or earlier. Notice the encised mark on the bottom is difficult to see because of the heavy glaze. The photo showing the mark was taken with NO flash so it could appear from reflective light. The total height is 21 1/4" tall. The bowl is 7 3/4" tall and the ... moreopening is 9 1/4" The stand is 13 3/4" tall with the base opening measuring 8 1/2" Overall weight of the two pieces is right at 13 pounds, we will carefully pack and ship each piece in seperate boxes with each box being insured for half the final sale value. Wonderful rare& early stoneware/ porcelain planter. 3 frogs with various instruments. The planter itself appears to be a large white water lily. The frogs have adorable but somewhat sad faces. The glaze on this planter is crazed.the tips of the water lily has tiny chips and I consider them to be insignificant. The bright green frogs wear pink jackets. The age of this planter is unknown but I suspect the 1930's-40's. possibly earlier. I have enjoyed this for quite awhile.and I never put a plant in it. It just made me smile.just the way it is. Here is a hard to find pair of cache pots on stands from around 1860-1880. The wood stands have metal ornamentation. Not standing straight. They are not very sturdy. A bit wobbly. To the top of the stands they are about 32" tall. The pots are 6 1/2" high and 7" across the opening. They have damage, hairlines, crazing, staining, one looks to have a firing crack on the base edge. Shipping will hard to estimate. Probably two boxes, one for the pots and one for the stands. Splendid and rare antique large French majolica jardiniere planter circa 1880-1900. This item is extremely rare to find. The decoration is a hunting scene probably in North Africa( Algeria) where the last lions were killed during the French colonial period from 1830. The item is in very good condition for its age with no cracks. No chips, no hairlines, no repairs or discoloration. There are only some tiny scratches of the glaze on the handles, on the base and on the back( see the pictures) but nothing serious. The maker is unknown but probably this beautiful piece is from Onnaing or Orchies or Sarreguemines.All of them famous French factories.
