This jardiniere with removable rim came home from Paris with me last month and I have to tell you. I'm so pleased it made it without damage. Just look at what a treasure it is! Old Paris is how some would refer to this piece, but the signature there on bottom tells us quite a bit more about it than that catch-all. The mark is the maker mark of famed porcelain decorator, ... moreJacob Petit. Jacob Petit(1796-1868) was a very talented porcelain painter who worked for the Royal Manufactory de Sevres in Paris, France, then went on his own and opened his own shop. Most of the Petit pieces had decorations that were colored pink, light green, pale purple, black and gold. He used the cobalt-blue initials"J.P. as his mark, but many of his pieces were not marked and get referred to as"Old Paris" along with unsigned Sevres and Vincennes pieces. His customers wanted"antique"style china, so he made copies of Sevres vases, Meissen figurines, many patterns of English dinnerware, Chinese export porcelain and more. These copies often are mistakenly identified as original old pieces. But Jacob Petit porcelains are so attractive and well-made that they are almost as pricey as originals. What we have here seems to be one of his pieces made similarly to Meissen. All those flowers and seashells and even birds would have been formed by hand and hand applied and painted. The painting depicts a pastoral scene. Sheep and cows are grazing in the fields with very steep mountains in the background. Most likely the Alps. A white farmhouse with a red roof is nestled into the trees. A small stream winds near the house and by a simple fence. The top and bottom of each urn is burgundy with fancy gold work, including detailed swags of flowers on the bottom. Gilded raised white and red beading border the center. The sturdy handles have a scroll design with tasteful gold work. These would make great planters or would be a lovely mantle decoration. The planters are marked ... morewith an S for Sevres. Antique Old Paris French Porcelain Cache Pot Vase Jardiniere with what appears to be a pair of tipsy cherubs- one looks to be sleeping it off and the other can't get enough. Clutching a bottle or a cup in each hand! Just lovely against the pink background with that very bright gold typically seen in Old Paris porcelain. The auctioneer listed this piece as vintage old Paris porcelain when I bought it but I can't attest to its veracity. There is no mark. The cachepot is 7.75 inches high. The diameter at the top is 6.75 inches and at the bottom(the short pedestal foot) 5.5 inches. A small amount of the black paint off the rim has thinned, probably where the pot has been handled over the years- see photo#5. There is also some slight rubbing on the gold circle on the top part surrounding the cherubs. Still, a very lovely piece that will ... morebrighten up any mantel or corner where displayed.
