Magnificent late Victorian- turn of the century era ceramic jardiniere. Beautiful. Rare monochrome pink glaze. I have seen 2 other versions of this piece in multicolored glaze- never in monochrome. It has the most awesome winged dragon or griffon figural handles! A real showstopper! In very good condition, considering its age. It has a couple of very small chips to the glaze, the worst of which is at the bottom of the dragon's tail(my 8th pic- the one where you see my hand holding the piece up for the photo) Also has a few minor glaze defects from its manufacture. Large Majolica Jardiniere Planter Drip Glaze
It is a solid planter. It does have overall crazing. A surface glaze crack near the bottom that does not show on the inside(see photo) and a 1" hairline on the inside rim. The underside has some numbers and letters that I can't make out. Measures apx. 9 1/2" tall and 9 3/4" across the top rim. The coIors are browns and greens and the glaze is shiny. Splendid and rare antique large French majolica jardiniere planter circa 1880-1900. This item is extremely rare to find. The decoration is a hunting scene probably in North Africa( Algeria) where the last lions were killed during the French colonial period from 1830. The item is in very good condition for its age with no cracks. No chips, no hairlines, no repairs or discoloration. There are only some tiny scratches of the glaze on the handles, on the base and on the back( see the pictures) but nothing serious. Well marked on the bottom with the raised"KG" StC" and the numbers"455" It also has the printed"FRANCE" It features vining green leaves and pinkish-red and yellow flowers that start from each foot of the jardiniere. It is in excellent condition with no chips or cracks! It has two pin points of glaze pops on and near one handle which is normal and expected with antique majolica. It does have overall glaze crazing and stilt marks on the bottom from the kiln firing. It also appears that through use the planter is showing signs of staining inside. Please see photos.
