In the late 19th Century the carving, particularly on the back of the chairs, became more imposing and excessively intricate. Incredible carved Fenghuang arms with wings, this chair is virtually covered in high relied carving. This is an exceptional example of Chinese Export Furniture in the late 19th Century and a very rare find. The Fenghuang or Chinese Phoenix, in Chinese mythology, is an immortal bird whose rare appearance is said to be an omen foretelling harmony at the ascent to the throne of a new emperor. Like the qilin(a unicorn-like creature) the fenghuang is often considered to signify both male and female elements, a yin-yang harmony; its name is a combination of the words feng representing the male aspect and huang the female. It is mentioned as early as the Shang dynasty in oracle-bone inscriptions. The fenghuang appears to be a symbol of Confucian values, wearing the characters meaning virtue, duty, ritual, compassion, and trust on various parts of its body. If seen, it is a sign of world peace. Its latest appearance is said to have taken place in Anhui province at the grave of the father of Hongwu, founder of the Ming dynasty in 1368. This is a large 19 th century jardinière that was made by Etruria Pottery. It has handles on each side and floral decoration on the front which gives it an art nouveau look. This has deep cobalt coloring on the handles. Center and around the foot. It would make a great centerpiece for a table. The piece is 11 inches tall and 15 inches wide at the handles. Beautiful Large 19th Century Antique Sevres Planter
On the front of the Sevres Planter there is a portrait of a young couple in love. On the opposite side is a beautiful landscape of a river with trees all around. The entire piece is hand painted and hand done. The age of the planter is late 19th Century. The exact measurments of the piece is 10 3/8 inches tall. The top circumference is about 12 inches and the bottom base circumference is a little bit bigger then 9 inches. The planter is in excellent condition. Lovely French majolica swan planter/ vase dating to the mid Victorian era. Circa 1870's. The piece features elegant lines and beautiful glazes in mainly monochromatic colors of black gray shades. It is in very good antique condition, no defects ... moreor damage but needs cleaning, mostly on the inside. I did a light surface cleaning but it could use a deeper wash. Has beautiful glaze colors, at one time it must have been near someone who was painting as it had some surface paint flecks on it. I did manage to get most of those off of it. Not too difficult as they were so old I could easily remove them with my fingernail. The inside shows one- two manufacturing flaws in the form of small lines in the clay which have been glazed over. These are small and quite normal, not damage. There are 3 sets of numbers stamped in the bottom of this swan. Two of the sets are very distinct and mostly easy to make out. Interestingly, the last number of each set looks to be double stamped. The group of four numbers was originally 7535 with the last 5 being over stamped with the number 6. I think) The set of two numbers originally was seventy something. I can't make out whether the last number is a 6 which was stamped over to a 0, or some other number. The final group of numbers is very faint, almost didn't see them at all. They are impressed in the clay so lightly that I really can't be sure of the exact numerals of which there are

ANTIQUE HAND PAINTED PORCELAIN FLOWER POT BOWL 19th CENTURY BIRD OF PARADISE
I found this at a thrift store. It is 5 1/2" tall and about 4" wide. It has a lavender main color and is very nicely hand painted with really nice detail. I think the bird is suppose to be a Bird of Paradise. From the way it was made I would guess this is from the 1800's but I am no expert. I see no marks or signature to help. The footed base has nice detail. The only thing I can find wrong with this is a small place on the interior that looks like a star ding. This is only on the inside. It is not evident on the outside. The simple lines and single color are a departure from what you normally find from age of jardinieres. We were not able to identify the maker, who left no identifying marks that we could find, but the color of green glaze is consistent with the late 19th century. The stand itself measures approx. 21" tall and 12" in diameter, the jardiniere measures approx. 14½" in diameter by 10¾" tall. There is general cracklature to the glaze and there is a restoration to the rim of the planter. They still have a lot of life left in them, ready to grace your porch or sunroom, bringing in a splash of Victorian style and bright colorful flowers should you choose to fill this with an abundance of blooming plants.
