In the late 19th Century the carving, particularly on the back of the chairs, became more imposing and excessively intricate. Incredible carved Fenghuang arms with wings, this chair is virtually covered in high relied carving. This is an exceptional example of Chinese Export Furniture in the late 19th Century and a very rare find. The Fenghuang or Chinese Phoenix, in Chinese mythology, is an immortal bird whose rare appearance is said to be an omen foretelling harmony at the ascent to the throne of a new emperor. Like the qilin(a unicorn-like creature) the fenghuang is often considered to signify both male and female elements, a yin-yang harmony; its name is a combination of the words feng representing the male aspect and huang the female. It is mentioned as early as the Shang dynasty in oracle-bone inscriptions. The fenghuang appears to be a symbol of Confucian values, wearing the characters meaning virtue, duty, ritual, compassion, and trust on various parts of its body. If seen, it is a sign of world peace. Its latest appearance is said to have taken place in Anhui province at the grave of the father of Hongwu, founder of the Ming dynasty in 1368. It is said that the song of the fenghuang is exceptionally beautiful and meaningful and that the animal has a special appreciation of human music. Pair Samson Style Large Porcelain Cachepot - Hunting Scene Chinese Export Taste
This is an exquisite pair of cachepots or jardinieres in the Chinese export manner from a prominent 2.500 acre estate outside of Philadelphia. They can also be used as wine coolers since they are very heavy and the walls of each piece are very thick(they stay cool) These are old. Probably 1880's to around 1900, and most probably Samson but are not marked. Each features a pack of hunting dogs running in a field with several large houses in the background. The houses have an Italianate or European feel to them and there are rolling hills in the background. In photo#4, there are seven hills in the upper left of the scene, possibly hinting at the seven hills of Rome. The dogs appear to be hounds and the prior owner raised dogs and horses, so these would have appealed to her"serious" hobbies. The dogs are very similar to dogs on ... moreother Samson porcelains, and the buildings in the background are the same as those in other Samson porcelains. There is an antique Samson bowl on 1stdibs right now that features a hunting scene with dogs that are nearly identical to the dogs on these planters. The workmanship is just amazing with lots of handpainted gilding and fanciful scrolling. They are the hard paste form of porcelain. The colors are still vivid. With greens, reds, tans, persimmon, yellows and gold. There is less than 5% gold loss. Each planter is about 7.25" tall x about 8" long(at the top)x about 7" wide- they are more oval than round. There are no cracks, chips or repairs on either planter. Please review the photos for details. I am totally in love with this pair of cachepots. They would look sensational in the country home. It's a quality porcelain planter used as a centerpiece from a old Chinese pattern called"Merry Monkey's.It's from 2008 and is not antique but will be collectible.I bought it online because it was sold as being a hand painted piece but it looks like transfer ware to me and wasn't cheap. Truely a wonderful piece. Ive had it for some time debating with myself if i should keep it in my collection but I've got my eye on a pair of vases. This piece weighs 50 lb and is 18 1/2" tall and 22" wide at its widest. It bears a Qianlong seal script mark in iron red but it is not of that period. This was made most probably around the turn of the century before the Republic period(Thats was my presumption when I bought it. It shows normal wear marks on the foot the base is stained reddish brown and the very bottom is not glazed over. The mark is well done and it proportional to the size of this bowl The Gold glaze is starting to show its age with a minimal amount of discoloration. ANTIQUE LARGE CHINESE BRONZE BANDED JARDINIERE KOI POT PLANTER WARRIORS
Offered for sale is a beautiful. Hand painted Chinese export jardiniere koi pot/planter with scenes containing warriors and horses in a mountain setting. The artist painted intricate details on the faces, clothing and military gear using predominate colors of emerald, red and yellow. Notice the wonderful expressions on the faces of both the warriors and the horses. The pot has unglazed, carved bronze colored bands above and below the scenes. Craqueleur is throughout the pot inside and out. This came from an estate of a collector of Asian antiques. The pot has some wear to the base and an old chip on the underside from long ago which seems to be put back on or was reapplied in the making of the pot. Please see photo above. There is a surface crack which can also be seen in the photos. This does not go through to the other side. And the pot ... morestill has a clear ring to it when tapped. There is a small speck of paint missing from one of the warriors face which can be seen in the last photo. There are some spots of paint from long ago which can also be seen in the photos. The wear is slight considering the age which I estimate to be around the end of the 1800's or beginning of the 1900's. I am not an expert in Asian antiques, but it is my best guess. It is an absolutely beautiful, very large pot which would make a nice addition to your collection. The pot measures 13 3/4" tall x 15 5/8" in diameter and weighs approximately 27 1/2 pounds.
