Vintage HP Japanese Porcelain Fernier Planter Bluebirds Male Heads Atop Legs
Description VINTAGE JAPANESE FERNIER Offered for bids is a beautifully hand painted vintage Japanese porcelain fernier/planter. Side decoration is divided into three panels by the leg supports. Each section has three bluebirds in flight against brown tree branches and a stormy sky. The birds are painted in a cobalt blue enamel with gold accents. The sky is colored in blushed shades of blue. Peach and gray. Though similar, each section is unique. Finishes are a combination of matte, semi-gloss and glossy. The support legs have a three dimensional head of an Asian man at top. I don't know if the figure represents anyone in particular, such as an emperor, or if the intent was only to add human form to the nature aspect of the piece. The tops of the heads are covered with gold. Gold trim runs along the outer sides, and there are gold accents ... morealong the textured surface of the supports. Top rim is covered in gold and has a series of fine lines on the surface. Outer rim edge has tiny gold beads. Beneath the beads is a band of dark blue geometric shapes/lines atop small sections of soft blue, peach and green. Along with the shapes are what look like three upside-down crowns. There are six short vertical lines of tiny gold beads, three of these are within the crowns. The pattern and design repeats in each of the three sections. Bottom outer rim is rounded and trimmed with gold. Piece is fully glazed. Fernier is approximately 3 5/8" high with a 7" top diameter and a center depth of 2 3/8" There is no drain insert. Stamped in green on bottom is Made In Japan. Unsure of exact age. The use of Japan instead of Nippon indicates this was made no earlier than 1921. The style and design lead me to believe this is from the 1920's or 30's. A Beautiful Fernier to Enhance Your Decor CONDITION: There is a crack on rim above one of the heads which has been repaired with filler. Part of the crack is visible as a narrow line on the outside.
