The makers initials C&N are also present for the silversmith, Crisford& Norris. Its hallmarked for Birmingham 1901 with the makers mark that looks to be"B&T" The rattle has some damage to mouth piece wich will need soldering and its very tarnished so will need a good wipe over with some silver polish. Rare Antique 1800s Tiffany & Co Mother of Pearl Sterling Silver Rattle Whistle
Offered is a truly astonishing piece. Straight out of an important historical home in Esopus, New York in the Hudson River Valley. Pieces like these were used to entertain babies in the 1800s. Prior to the now standard"barbell" design of baby rattles. A nanny would hang the whistle by a chatelaine(see ring on back of item) and use the whistle as a way to entertain the baby. The mother of pearl portion could be used for teething. At one time, this piece probably had a tiny bell on each side which would also have entertained an infant(bells would be a choking hazard now) This is an exquisite example. Circa 1850-1880, monogrammed JBP and signed"Tiffany& Co Sterling" on back of sterling silver whistle piece(see 3rd photo) It is 3 3/4" tall x 1" wide and is in excellent condition for its age with some light tarnish ... moreon the silver(this should be removed with silver cleaner but we didn't want to touch it) and faint scratching to the silver and mother of pearl. I am unable to identify the origin of this piece and the maker. There are several possibilities. Such as the Stieff Company, who used the swastika as a date marker for 1928. Asian. Middle Eastern, European ect. have all used the symbol. This is a lovely antique babies whistle from late Victorian days and in nice condition for its age. It's about 3 ins in length and the Mother of Pearl handle is surmounted by an ornate sterling silver top with a whistle mechanism and a hook for hanging around babies neck. The whistle has a slight bump but this is common if the item has been used. This has never been a rattle with bells missing like some similar items on offer on ebay. Large Antique Sterling Silver Baby Rattle Whistle Coral Teether Birmingham 1901 On offer is this rare large sized antique child's rattle& whistle with coral teether. The fine rattle is fully hallmarked for Birmingham 1901 and has the maker's initials for Crisford Norris. This rare rattle is a large size measuring approx. 16.5 cms in length and about 5 cms in width across the widest points and has a total weight of 70 grams. It is made of solid silver with fabulous silver embossed decoration also featuring a row of faces with foliate and floral scroll work. Simply exquisite! The rattle is fitted with all it's original silver bells. Four across the top and and eight around the central body making a total of 12 and all ring beautifully. The whistle is also still in good working order and sounds well. To the back of the mouthpiece ... moreis a hanging loupe so that the rattle could be tied to a ribbon so the lucky child owner would not lose it. The base of the rattle has a coral teether. This superb antique child's rattle is offered in very good condition with no flaws noted. The silver has no dents or dings. The bells are all original and also free from dents, the coral teether shows no damage and the whistle is in working order. This is a very fine antique rattle that seldom come to market in this condition. This one is offered at low start and no reserve. Offered here is a wonderful(and guaranteed original and authentic) Victorian era baby rattle/teether/whistle. I'd like to know the history of this piece but rest assured. It was originally owned by a well-to-do family. It is made of sterling silver and Mother-Of-Pearl. It features very intricate silver work on one end and a gorgeous piece of Mother-Of-Pearl on the other end. It is in FANTASTIC shape-no damage whatsoever. It measures 4" long. It has two fancy bells attached for the rattle part, a whistle at the end, and the Mother-Of-Pearl for the teether part. The whistle and the bells work good. It has a fancy white tassel that is attached to the loop at the top. It is hallmarked with what looks to me to be a"W" with a lion figure and has"STERLING" underneath the hallmark. Superb William IV sterling silver child's rattle. Fully hallmarked for 1834. This is a lovely silver rattle made in the reign of King William IV by Mary Chawner in London 1834. The rattle has a whistle to the end and six bells and it's original coral teether. The whistle and bells are finely chased with wrigglework and lattice decoration. The rattle is 6-1/8 inches/ 155 mm long and 1-1/8 inches/ 28 mm in diametre- NOT including the bells. It weighs 38 grams. The rattle has clear hallmarks- lion passant. Duty mark, letter t for 1834 and maker's mark MC for Mary Chawner. The rattle is in excellent condition with just a couple of tiny dents.
