Antique Vintage GORHAM Made Sterling Silver Handle Button Hook
I believe this to be a GORHAM sterling silver button hook. By looking at the anchor mark I think this was made in the early 1900's. I back this up with the polished steel shank which is a number 8 which is identified on page 25 of Ian Wood's GORHAM book. On the side it has B2928 and the initials on the front are C A W with an arrow going thru. It is approx. 6 1/2" in length. It has some wear but still is a nicely made Gorham product. Art Nouveau Sterling Silver Angel Decorated Handle& Steel Button Hook by Henry Matthews dated 1901 This Antique Button Hook measures approximately 11 inches or 281 mm in length from the top of its handle to the end of its hook and it is 1 1/4 inches or 32 mm across the widest part of its upper handle from side to side. The button hook is made from a shaped sterling silver handle that has been delightfully embossed or raised relief decorated on both sides with the winged heads of angels among clouds that are within a scrolled foliate decorated outer borders and it has a long steel hook. This form of decoration is typically Art Nouveau in style and the button hook has Not been engraved with a previous owners initials or family monogram all as photographed below, the handle has been impressed with a full set of English sterling silver hallmarks ... morethat read as follows, H M- Anchor- Lion Passant- b H M is the Birmingham silversmith or makers mark of Henry Matthews. The Anchor is the mark of the Birmingham assay office, the Lion Passant is the mark of English 925 standard sterling silver and the letter b is the date letter for 1901. The condition is used and Excellent for its age. The handle is in near Mint Condition with No Dents. No Splits, No Holes, No Cracks and No Repairs that I can find, the button hook is straight, the decoration and definition are very crisp, the silver hallmark is still clearly legible although as the button hook is a used antique it does have some surface corrosion to the steel hook from age along with some extremely minor surface marks and wear from use, it has the patina of age that is to be expected and a gentle clean would enhance it greatly. Personally I think that this antique button hook would make a superb addition to any cabinet collection and that it looks fantastic considering that it's over 110 years old. Lovely sterling silver button hook made by the Unger Brothers company of Newark. New Jersey. The hook's handle has a lovely, ornate design adorning it. Not sure of an exact date of origin, but the company existed from 1874 until 1912 and I suspect this originated in the earlier portion of the period. The hook shows some wear and tarnish and some pictured damage, but nothing a good silversmith couldn't likely remedy. It measures 7.5" x 1" and weighs 35 grams, though the handle appears to be the only sterling silver portion, so I'm not sure how much of the weight is silver weight. This is an antique button hook with a sterling silver and enamel handle and a silverplate shaft and hook. Description: The sterling silver and amethyst or mauve colored enamel handle has engine turned(guilloche) decoration underneath the enamel. One side of the handle is marked with the Birmingham assay marks(anchor' and'lion passant' along with the date letter(x' for 1922. To the left of this mark. There is a maker's mark in a rectangular punch but it has worn down so that it can't be read. The other side of the handle is marked with a'lion passant' and an'x' The shaft of the button hook is marked'English Make Ster' although the last'R' is difficult to read- this mark refers to the handle. Dimensions: The button hook is approximately 6 3/4" long overall. The sterling silver and ... moreenamel handle is about 2 3/4" long. 5/8" wide at its widest and 3/8" deep. Condition: This item is in very good. Used condition. There a few tiny flea bites in the enamel visible under 10X magnification but no edge chips and nothing apparent without magnification. One 2 mm scratch is visible in the enamel on one side without magnification. There are a few dark spots in the shaft of the hook and a few marks in the silverplate near where it joins the sterling silver handle. The handle is firmly attached to the shaft and overall, the button hook is sturdy and the silver shines well. This is a great designed Sterling silver handle button hook in extremely nice condition. It has Sterling and B1805. But the date mark is rubbed located on one side next to the shank. It has a number 1 shank as pictured in IAN WOOD, AN INTRODUCTION TO GORHAM on page 25. I couldn't match up the design with any in the book! The shank is a polished steel tapered to the hook. Antique Sterling Silver Relief Decorated Handle& English Steel Sewing Tool/ Button Hook dated 1919 This Antique Button Hook measures approximately 6 1/2 inches or 164 mm in length from the top of its handle to the end of its hook and it is 7/8 of an inch or 22 mm across the widest part of its upper handle from side to side. The button hook is made from a shaped sterling silver handle that has been delightfully embossed or raised relief decorated on both sides with the lattice. Scrolls and foliage around a shaped cartouche that has Not been engraved with a previous owners initials or family monogram all as photographed below, the handle has been impressed with a full set of English sterling silver hallmarks that read as follows, W J M& Co- Anchor- Lion Passant- u W J M& Co is the Birmingham silversmith or makers mark of W J Myatt& ... moreCo whose mark is recorded as being used from 1900 to 1946. The Anchor is the mark of the Birmingham assay office, the Lion Passant is the mark of English 925 standard sterling silver and the letter u is the assay office date letter for 1919. The condition is used and fairly good for its age. The handle has No Large Dents. No Splits, No Holes, No Cracks and No Repairs that I can find, the button hook is straight, the decoration and definition are crisp, the silver hallmark is still legible although as the button hook is a used antique it the makers mark is partially rubbed or worn and the handle has several small shallow dents along with some minor surface corrosion to the steel hook from age, it has some minor surface marks and wear from use along with the patina of age that is to be expected and a gentle clean would enhance it greatly. Personally I think that this antique sewing tool or button hook can still be used today for threading ribbon or elastic hems and that it would make a nice addition to any cabinet collection, I also think that it has a delightful look about it considering that it's almost 100 years old.
