Here we have an unusual and superb piece of hallmarked silver assayed in London in 1921. There is a maker's stamp"FH" and having researched this. I believe it relates to London silversmith Frederick Haberling. The central. Oval hole was to insert your inkwell and the light scratching will be due to the fact that this was a functional desktop item which would, no doubt have had pens sat upon it. The piece has been sympathetically and professionally cleaned by my Mother. A retired ANtique Restorer and Jeweller. There is a scratched mark to the base"79 M/ MR/ The four feet are in good order and the piece sits nicely. As originally intended. Other than the aformentioned light scratching, there appears to be no damage whatsoever. It measures 15.5 cms by just under 10.5 cms and is 3 cms tall. The weight is 111 grammes. Unusual Solid Silver& Glass Travelling Inkwell 1837 A beautiful and unusual solid silver and glass travelling inkwell. A clear glass rectangular shaped well with a solid silver rim and top. A hinged lid is fastened to the glass with a twist screw fastener. Fully hallmarked to the cover for Thomas Dexter London 1837. The Inside of the lid is lined with leather and then a further rectangle of silver which is also stamped. The hinge is in perfect condition as is the fastener which closes tightly. The glass is cut to the base with a starburst motif and there are no chips or marks. The top of the cover is engraved with an amorial crest of a lion and a griffin which confirms that this item would have been owned by someone of considerable wealth. Here is an Antique British Cut Glass and Sterling Lidded Ink Well The best that I could decipher from the markings: Made by: Drew& Sons" Makers' Piccadilly" Circus" Here is a little History: Drew& Sons was founded by John Drew. Married Mary Summers and one of their sons was Samuel Summers Drew. The firm started in 1844 when John Drew was 20, and thus not of age under British law at that time. It seems likely, therefore, that he got his father who was a glover in Maidenhead(although born in Iron Acton, Somerset) to be the legal founder of the business. His name was Samuel Drew. John Drew apprenticed as a display cabinet maker and he used to bang his head on the pillow four times so he would wake up at 4 am. He used the time to make cabinets on his own account and so had enough money to start his business when his ... moreapprenticeship was over. The British business was sold in the 1930's. The last vestiges of it as a business was on the door of a silversmiths in Upper Audley Street, Mayfair which had the words"Incorporating Drew and Sons" Made in 1907" The Lid is made of 92.5 Sterling The top of the lid is monogramed There are a few very tiny nicks here and there(Mostly the Bottom Corners) I could not see them without magnification. But was looking for them on account I believed this would be the most likely spot/spots to get nicked. The outer part of the mouth has a few nicks or rough spots(Very minor) Please note my photos. This Piece is really in"Very Good Condition" It is not"Perfect" in that there are a Very Few Nicks commensurate with age and/or use. But really very nice.

A really magnificent inkwell or inkstand. The tray made from a hefty piece of English sterling silver, beautifully shaped with a highly decorative pierced or reticulated gallery. Standing on three feet, the front of the stand has a double pen rest, in a complimentary design to the feet. The centre houses a large glass inkwell with a cut star-cut underside mounted with a sterling silver collar and hinged lid. The top is beautifully embossed with a rural scene featuring Gentleman Farmer or Land Owner inspecting the harvest.
