Antique Vintage Sterling Silver Handle Buttonhook Birmingham.
This is a sterling silver handle buttonhook with ENGLISH MADE STEEL stamped on the shank. There are hall marks on both sides of the handle. I believe this was made by Adie& Lovekin in Birmingham in 1864. The handle has wear. But the shank is in great condition. It starts with a metal ferrule then a ball and flange decoration before tapering down to the hook. Approx. length is over 9" total. The approx. weight is a total of 48G. A nice large buttonhook. For sale is an Old Antique SOLID STERLING SILVER PAGE TURNER/ PAPER KNIFE/ LETTER OPENER HANDLE. The Handle has English Sterling Silver Hallmarks for Birmingham. 1901. The marks are a bit rubbed and I can't make out the maker's mark(see photos) It would have originally had an Ivory or Tortoiseshell blade. It measures 75 mm in length. The Opening measures about 26 mm by about 3-4 mm(it is slightly bent inward. It weighs 22 grams. Aside from some very slight denting near the end and some overall minor scratches and wear(see photos) It is in Otherwise Very Good Condition- there are no other condition issues or damage. It is Estate Fresh and I have not cleaned or polished it at all. This would be a great addition to a collection- Good Luck! Any White or Dark Spots in the Photos are the result of Camera Glare. On offer is one of the more rarer English rattles featuring a butterfly. Hallmarked for Birmingham, 1902-3 with maker Crisford& Norris. It measures overall 14 cm(5 ½ inch) and has a wonderful mother of pearl handle. Please see the photos included with this auction. The overall condition is good but I mention a few very minor issues for good order.The rattle has two dimples on the very top(photo 5) where a chain might have hung at one time. The one side of the mother of pearl handle has some hairlines(photo 3) these are not on the otherside so must just be on the surface. The wings have two minor holes stopped. The glove stretchers have Not been engraved with a previous owners initials or family monogram all as photographed below and both handles have been impressed with a full set of English sterling silver hallmarks that read as follows, B& Co- Anchor- Lion Passant- k B& Co is the Birmingham silversmith or makers mark. The Anchor is the mark of the Birmingham assay office, the Lion Passant is the mark of English 925 standard sterling silver and the letter k is the date letter for 1909. No Splits, No Cracks, No Holes and No Repairs that I can find, they're working perfectly, they are straight, the definition is crisp, the sprung hinge is working perfectly, the stretchers open with ease and closes tightly, the silver hallmark is still clearly legible although as the glove stretchers are a used antique they do have the odd small dent in the handles along with some extremely minor surface marks and wear from use, they have the patina of age that is to be expected and a gentle clean would enhance them greatly. Personally I think that this antique glove stretcher can still be used today as a desk top paper clip and that it would make a superb addition to any cabinet collection, I also think that they look fantastic considering that they are over 100 years old. Antique Button Hook with Sterling Silver & Enamel Handle Birmingham England 1922
This is an antique button hook with a sterling silver and enamel handle and a silverplate shaft and hook. Description: The sterling silver and amethyst or mauve colored enamel handle has engine turned(guilloche) decoration underneath the enamel. One side of the handle is marked with the Birmingham assay marks(anchor' and'lion passant' along with the date letter(x' for 1922. To the left of this mark. There is a maker's mark in a rectangular punch but it has worn down so that it can't be read. The other side of the handle is marked with a'lion passant' and an'x' The shaft of the button hook is marked'English Make Ster' although the last'R' is difficult to read- this mark refers to the handle. Dimensions: The button hook is approximately 6 3/4" long overall. The sterling silver and ... moreenamel handle is about 2 3/4" long. 5/8" wide at its widest and 3/8" deep. Condition: This item is in very good. Used condition. There a few tiny flea bites in the enamel visible under 10X magnification but no edge chips and nothing apparent without magnification. One 2 mm scratch is visible in the enamel on one side without magnification. There are a few dark spots in the shaft of the hook and a few marks in the silverplate near where it joins the sterling silver handle. The handle is firmly attached to the shaft and overall, the button hook is sturdy and the silver shines well. This is a very nicely designed silver handle button hook. It has the hall marks of being made in Birmingham in 1901 but the makers mark is rubbed. It has a polished steel shank with a ball and flange decoration then has STEEL stamped into it before tapering to the hook. It has very light wear and shows very nicely. It is approx. 7" in length. Antique Sterling Silver Handle Grooming Tweezers from Birmingham dated 1910
Edwardian Sterling Silver Handle Grooming Tweezers by W J Myatt& Co of Birmingham dated 1910 The tweezers measure approximately 5 inches or 127 mm in length from the end of the silver handle to the end of the steel tweezers by 7/8 of an inch or 22 mm across the widest part of their handle from side to side and they are 3/8 of an inch or 9 mm across the width of the tweezers. The tweezers have a delightfully shaped sterling silver handle that has been raised relief and engrave decorated with stylized lattice. Scrolls and foliage on both sides and they have a steel tweezer that is in working order, the tweezers have Not been engraved with a previous owners initials or family monogram all as photographed below and the handle has been impressed with a full set of English sterling silver hallmarks that read as follows, W J M& Co- Anchor- ... moreLion Passant- l W J M& Co is the Birmingham silversmith or makers mark of W J Myatt& Co whose mark is recorded as being used from 1900 to 1946. The Anchor is the mark of the Birmingham assay office, the Lion Passant is the mark of English 925 standard sterling silver and the letter l is the assay office date letter for 1910. The condition is used and Excellent for their age. The Grooming Tweezers have No Splits. No Cracks, No Holes and No Repairs that I can find, the tweezers are straight, the definition and decoration is fairly crisp, the tweezers are working, the sterling silver hallmark is still legible although as the grooming tweezers are a used Edwardian antique they do have some dents in the handle along with some minor corrosion to their steel ends that is consistent with their age and they have some extremely minor surface marks and wear from use. They have the patina of age that is to be expected and a gentle clean would not go amiss. Personally I think that these Edwardian grooming tweezers can still be used today and that they would make a good addition to any cabinet collection.
