UNUSUAL SAMPSON MORDAN & CO SILVER SEAL FORM PROPELLING PENCIL
An unusual propelling pencil seal combination from Sampson and Mordan. Silver plated I believe as I can find no assay marks. In good condition with just minimal wear and measuring 3 inches in length when put together, the pencil 4 3/4 inches when extended.

Cylindrical shaped body with beautiful hand chased foliage decoration. Raised decorated top end with inset topaz gemstone. There are two foliage shaped sliding mounts on each side of the pencil. VINTAGE. SILVER, EGYPTIAN MUMMY, NOVELTY PROPELLING PENCIL Having recently been instructed by the vendors solicitors to clear a remote Dartmoor cottage. The property having been placed'on the market, we were astounded at the amount of antique and vintage items and clutter that confronted us. The cottage had been unlived in for the last two and a half years and surprisingly the contents were intact and the place was dry. I imagine that the reason for the contents still being intact and unmolested was the remoteness of the place. Just spring water, bottled gas and an old paraffin powered generator for electric power. It put me in mind of the Lorna Doone classic, so intense was its isolation. In accordance with my policies none of the items being offered have had cleaning of any description administered to them. They are all offered in virtually ... morethe same condition as they left the property. The odd item may have had a duster or a soapy cloth over it to enable good photography, otherwise the bits are offered as removed. This item is a silver novelty propelling pencil made in the form of an Egyptian mummy. The‘keep ring’ is stamped 800. By gently pulling and twisting the base of the mummy(a very tricky job! so the pencil is eventually exposed. A twist to lock it and’hey presto’ you’re away! To replace simply push in. Thin end first. Unscrewing the tip exposes the lead insertion area. There is already a small piece fitted but not enough to write with. The case is decorated in enamels of five varying colours. The four rows of multi coloured lines at chest level have forty eight(48) settings. Eight(8) of these are vacant. The other decoration in blue and green enamels on other parts of the mummy appear intact. The hieroglyphics on both sides are set in royal blue. Size closed down is 2 3/8th” long. Opened it is 4 5/8th” long. General condition is very good but a good clean and polish is recommended. This application having been fulfilled should enhance its appearance no end. Here we have a lovely quality'Yard O Led' propelling pencil. Made of English hallmarked solid silver and featuring an engine turned design to the body. I have uploaded a number of close-up pictures for you to appreciate the condition of the piece. I think the model is a'Diplomat' but I'm not entirely sure. Fully hallmarked as per picture 3; comprising the makers mark'JM&Co' the date letter'P' for 1950. The lion denoting sterling silver, and the panther's head for London. Further hallmarked on the clip with the lion. And again on the top piece that twists the mechanism. This section is also stamped with'PATENT NO. 422767. And'MADE IN ENGLAND' The clip is stamped'YARD-O-LED' The cartouche is initialled'F.J.C. The body has several knocks and pieces are missing. The top part is spring loaded and when you look inside the other end there is a screw section that moves freely. ANTIQUE VICTORIAN SOLID SILVER PROPELLING FOUNTAIN PEN PENCIL C1890 17g This is for an antique Victorian solid silver propelling fountain pen pencil. Circa 1890. Made of solid silver. The cylindrical barrel is engine turned engraved, and has two apertures, one with a foliate decorated sliding button to propel the internal pencil(the corresponding button& fountain pen mechanism are missing) The screw fitting finial, which opens to the interior for re-filling with lead, is chased with acanthus scrolls, and is inset with a blue and red glass seal tip, in the form of a shield. This is unmarked, but tests as solid silver. Although there is no makers mark, it was likely made by Samson Mordan or similar. It measures 9.7 cm in length. The seal tip measures 1.4 cm in length. The letter opener has a superb shaped and spiral fluted handle above a straight blade with rounded end. The end of the handle has a pull out propelling pencil with matching spiral fluted round top. The letter opener is 7/8 inches/ 22 mm wide and 8-1/4 inches/ 210 mm long. The propelling pencil is 2 inches/ 50 mm long when closed and 3-1/2 inches/ 89 mm long when extended. They weigh 62 grams. The silver has clear hallmarks- lion passant. London mark, letter a for 1896 and maker's mark SM&Co for Sampson Mordan& Co. The letter opener and pencil are both in excellent condition with no dents. The set comes with the original fitted case and a vile containing spare lead for the pencil. The pencil is marked sterling and the ball marker is hallmarked for Birmingham with a date letter for 1987 and the makers mark for William Manton. Antique Art Deco Sterling Silver Fully Working BCM Life- Long Propelling Pencil circa 1930's This Antique Pencil measures approximately 4 inches or 102 mm in length from the top of the hanging ring on its body to the end of the nozzle and it is just over 3/8 of an inch or 10 mm across the widest part of its upper body from side to side. The body of the pencil is made from sterling silver in a tubular shape that has been engine turn engrave decorated and it has a square sterling silver ring on the top so that it can either be hung as a pendant from a chain or a decorative silk tassel can be attached. The top of the pencils body has a very typical stepped decoration and this twists against the lower body to extend and retract the internal lead push rod, the side of its body has a shaped cartouche that has Not been engraved with a previous ... moreowners initials or family monogram and the inner body has been impressed BCM Life Long, Made In England, Pat No 439906, BCM is a trade mark of W.H Collins from Birmingham and these pencils were distributed by Conway Stewart, the top of the outer body has also been impressed STERLING SILVER for 925 standard solid sterling silver and this is alongside the words"Life- Long" as photographed below. The condition is used and Excellent for its age. The Pencil is in Full Working Order. The pencil has No Large Dents. No Splits, No Cracks, No Holes and No Repairs that I can find, the pencil is straight, the decoration is crisp, the mechanism is working perfectly as the inner lead push rod extends and retracts as it should, the sterling silver marks are still clearly legible although as this is a used antique Art Deco pencil it does have some small shallow dents around its body along with some extremely minor surface marks and wear from use. It has the patina of age that is to be expected and a gentle clean would not go amiss. SAMPSON MORDAN& CO. COMBINED DIP PEN. PENCIL(AND KNIFE) Fully hallmarked for Sampson Mordan and Co London 1886 Sterling. And also bearing the name W Thornhill& Co(as the retailers) this pen was the multi tool of the era! Originally it would have had a third component propelling from the end- probably a small knife. This has long gone. What remains are the other two propelling components- a dip pen nib. And a holder for pencil lead. No lead remains. Apart from the missing knife. The only other slight issue is the stiffness of the pen nib and lead holder when trying to extend them. Superb and rare Edwardian sterling silver novelty propelling pencil. Fully hallmarked for London 1902. This is a rare and very large novelty silver pencil in the form of a hunting horn- it is 16 inches/ 406 mm long. The pencil is in the form of a classic hunting horn with mouthpiece to one end and flared and rolled opening at the other end. The mouthpiece turns and the propelling pencil extends from inside. The horn is 1-3/8 inches/ 35 mm in diametre and it is 15-1/2 inches/ 394 mm long when closed and 16 inches/ 406 mm long when extended. It weighs 86 grams.
