A very unusual sterling silver and mother of pearl bookmark. It is hallmarked for Sheffield 1910 with the makers marks being Walker and Hall. It has been beautifully designed in the form of a trowel with mother of pearl handle. Most interesting the handle bears an inscription which reads‘ CEMENTS FRIENDSHIP’ there are also the letters‘IIC’ I do not know what this refers to. It is in perfect condition with the silver being free from dings splits distortions and repairs and the mother of pearl being free from chips cracks and repairs. It is in the shape of a trowel and has a vine leaf decoration around the handle. It is 9.5cm long and in remarkably good condition for its age. A beautiful rare Anglo Indian sterling silver ceremonial trowel. It is unmarked bit tests as high grade silver. It can be dated by the inscription to 1941. It has been beautifully made being finely engraved. Interestingly the handle incorporates unusual early plastic which would have been expensive to produce at this time. Its most interesting feature is its inscription which reads: FOUNDATION STONE LAID BY SIR GEORGE BOAG KCIE CSI ICS…FOR THE RK AND CS&W MILLS LTD GENERAL WARD IN THE COIMBATORE DISTRICT JUBILEE TUBERCULOSIS SANATORIUM PERUNDURAI ON 7-12-1941. Vintage hallmarked silver Masonic Foundation Trowel with House Frame – 1988
Vintage silver Masonic Trowel This fascinating item of Masonic interest is made from sterling silver and features a trowel with wooden handle to which is attached the outline frame of a house which is also fashioned from sterling silver. Both the trowel and frame are marked with the Lion Passant(verifying it as sterling silver) and the date letter for 1988. Unfortunately. There is no maker’s mark or City Assay mark. The frame is attached to the trowel by two nuts. Unfortunately. The originals are missing so they have been replaced with contemporary steel ones. I suspect the whole piece would originally have sat on a plinth and the nuts would have secured everything together. Also, to the inner surface of the house frame are two holes on each side. It is likely that a plate was originally set into these holes and bridged the base of the frame ... morebut, unfortunately, this is missing. This piece is in good condition but there is a crease across the front of the trowel and some surface abrasions as shown in the highly magnified photos below.
