The labels are for port. Madeira, sherry and Tokay. The labels themselves are in the form of rounded rectangles, with the names cut out in stencil style lettering. The labels are in great condition. There are no dents. No splits, no breaks, and no repairs. All four labels are hallmarked on the back with the Tiffany& Co. hallmark. And sterling. The Tokay and port labels have the initial'T' for the company director between 1902-1907, Charles T. Cook. The Madeira label has the initial'C' for the company director between 1907-1947, John C. Antique Sterling Silver & Niello Decorated Sherry Bottle / Decanter Label c 1846
Early Victorian Sterling Silver& Niello Decorated Sherry Decanter Label by George Unite dated 1846 This Antique Decanter or Bottle Label measures approximately 4 3/8 inches or 112 mm in length from the base of the label to the top of the chain when it is hanging by just over 2 1/8 inches or 55 mm across the width of the label from side to side and it is 1 3/8 inches or 36 mm deep from the top of the body to the bottom. The label is made from solid sterling silver in a curved rectangular shape that has scrolling or shaped outer edges with a solid sterling silver chain that hangs from either side of its upper body. The front of the label has been wonderfully engraved and niello decorated with scrolled outer borders around a shaped central panel that has the word SHERRY across the center, the bottle or decanter label has Not been engraved ... morewith a previous owners initials or family monogram all as photographed below and the back of the label has been impressed with a full set of English solid sterling silver hallmarks that read as follows, Lion Passant- Young Queen Victoria Head- GU- stylized X- Anchor The Lion Passant is the mark of English 925 standard solid sterling silver. The Young Queen Victoria Head is the duty mark of the reigning monarch, GU is the famous Birmingham silversmith or makers mark of George Unite whose mark is recorded as being used from 1832, the stylized letter X is the assay office date letter for 1846 and the Anchor is the mark of the Birmingham assay office. The condition is used and near Mint for its age. The Label has No Dents. No Splits, No Cracks, No Holes and No Repairs that I can find, the label is straight, the definition and decoration is very crisp, the silver hallmark is still clearly legible although as this early Victorian bottle or decanter label is a used antique it does have the some extremely minor surface marks and wear from use along with the patina of age that is to be expected and a gentle clean would not go amiss.
