Early 18th C English Sterling Silver 9-1/2" Marrow Scoop Spoon
18TH CENTURY 9-1/2" DOUBLE END MARROW SCOOP I have som e extraordinary sterling items for your consideration this week. Most qu ite old English pieces like this excellent double end marrow scoop. 9-1/2" in le ngth. This spoon has been a bit of a chal lenge to identify correctly. The marks on this fine marrow scoop are worn and difficult to read. It is certainly an 18th century piece. Very likely early 18th century from 1717. There is no damage to the scoop and no monograms. It is plain in design with a narrow and wider end. The scoop ... moreweighs 60 grams or 1.92 ozt. An Antique George III 'Duty Dodger' Silver Marrow Scoop : London c1785
Description SN1063. Please Note: Duty Dodging was a practice employed by Silversmiths resentful of the taxes imposed on pieces of silver. It took different forms. A common method used on flatware was to stamp the maker's mark four times to give the impression of a full set of hallmarks. When infact it hadn't been assayed and thus avoided duty. Such items have consequently become known as'Duty Dodgers' and are actually quite rare as once discovered the'error' was often corrected by overstamping.
