Solid Silver & Electric Blue Guilloche Enamel Powder Compact (Navy JWB Date B)
I think the pictures will better describe this listing than I am able to. As all I can say is that this is a JWB hallmarked compact with the date letter B is a top and bottom notched square which I believe dates it to 1951. The sprung button for opening and the hinge are both operating perfectly. The anchor denotes that it was assayed in Birmingham. This is a rare octagonal design with what I believe to be a Navy badge on the front, and a quite similar item ended at over 200 pounds in the last few weeks. I am starting at an exceptionally reasonable 65.00 pounds and there is no reserve. The reason for starting low is the following areas of damage. 1) Cracked Mirror 2) Dent to machined silver back 3) One chip corner to the enamel 4) Light surface scratching to the surface of the enamel. I am sure the mirror is easy to replace. But I am not ... morean expert in the other areas. Please view the pictures and make your own mind up. For sale is this European made Solid Silver.800 silver Art Deco engraved powder compact dating from the 1920s to 1930s. When closed it is approx. 9.4cm or 3 11/16 inches across and weighs 85 grams. It is in nice condition with only slight wear. The engraved patterns on both side are still very nice. The mirror is not very clear and the clasp works well. The compact has a.800 silver mark. WW2 RAF Solid Silver & Guilloche Compact, Hallmarked J.W.B Birmingham 1932. 43g
I have here a very beautiful WW2 RAF solid Silver& guilloche Compact. The compact has a very fine and intricate engine turning which has been overlayed with a blue Guilloche. There is a very finely detailed and enameled set of RAF wings fitted on top. The compact is fully hallmarked for J.W. Benson Ltd. Birmingham, 1932. The compact still has it's original gilt lining and mirror. This would make a beautiful present for someone this Christmas. However there is plenty of space if you wish to have this piece personalised if you so desire. Upon opening the hinged lid it reveals that the inside of this compact has been gilded. Although the gilt is a little worn. There are some very slight/minor dints/dents upon this piece. But nothing at all serious in my opinion. As mentioned above. The lid is hinged and the hinge is in good order, however the catch on the lid may need some attention because it does not always shut properly. On the inside base of the compact/snuff box it has been clearly hallmarked and dated and reads as follows: The Anchor representing Birmingham. For sale I have this lovely antique solid hallmarked silver hinged lidded compact and mirror. The piece has beautifully engine turned decoration. The lovely piece is hallmarked for English sterling silver. Was assayed in Birmingham with the date letter for 1914. The piece measures 5cm/2" across by 3cm/1 1/4" tall and weighs in at 56.5g approx. The condition of the piece is very good with some very slight indentations to the lid and surface scratches but none of this spoils the look of the piece. A lovely piece and great gift. The compact has 3 sections& is in the most beautiful condition with just one tiny dings but i must stress that the top clasp is missing so it does not close flush. A silver mirror compact. Often used with a chatelaine, or today as a photo pendant. Fully hallmarked for Birmingham in 1920 with the makers mark ALLd which is Adie& Lovekin Ltd. Nice to have the mirror, so often are missing, although the mirror is a bit frosty at the top. Few small dings, as the pictures, but otherwise in good condition with a nice engraved design and an empty cartouche at the bottom, and gilded inside. The diameter is 3.3cms or slightly over 1.25ins, the weight 8.6gms.

HISTORICAL NOTES ON THESE LATE 1940'S MARKS. The law 5 February 1934 n. 305 introduced uniformity in the shape of silversmith's marks. The new mark identifying the silversmith consisted of a lozenge containing: number: corresponding to the number identifying the silversmith'fascio' fascist party symbol two letters: initials of the Province The lozenge was coupled to an oval containing the purity degree 800 The Law 26 October 1944 n. 313(Decreto Legislativo Luogotenenziale 26 Ottobre 1944 n. 313) ordered the elimination of the'fascio' symbol of'fascism' maintaining into the lozenge only the number(identification of the silversmith) and the two letters(initials of the Province) The availability of new lozenges was not immediate and for a short period the old marks with the obliterated'fascio' were maintained.

For auction is this beautifully engine turned. Solid silver compact. The maker is C&A and has the date letter L with the lion and panthers head. The weight of this compact is 46.9 grams. The circumference of the compact is 47 mm. The mirror is in tact however is a little loose and some of the mirror backing has come away in the corner.
