The letter opener has a superb shaped and spiral fluted handle above a straight blade with rounded end. The end of the handle has a pull out propelling pencil with matching spiral fluted round top. The silver is fully hallmarked on the base of the pin cushion confirming it was assayed in Chester in 1908(please see second photograph- date letter'H' The hallmark also includes the maker's mark'SM& Co' for Sampson Mordan& Co. Who are regarded as the most desirable manufacturer of pin cushions, etc in the Victorian/Edwardian period. The Sampson Mordan Chick is a design classic. Which they made in a number of sizes and this is the smallest and, in my opinion. The most beautiful. Although I cannot be certain it looks as though it still has it's original pin cushion. The length hand engraved with typical foliate detail and a round unengraved bloodstone agate seal to the end, made by Sampson Mordan& Co circa 1880. Internally the mechanism is pushed up using the ring around the middle of the pencil, and the end twists to extend more lead. It i s clearly hallmarked to the side S. Mordan& Co. And also engraved with the name Sydney Peller. There are no other hallmarks but the casing tests as sterling silver.
