This quality vesta case match safe measures 50mm(2' x 36mm(2' x 12mm(5' and weighs 47 grams. It is fully hallmarked for solid sterling silver Chester 1908 with the makers mark for the famous Sampson Mordan& Co it is also marked" Patent Turbine- Seamless- Nonchoke" The strike to the base moves in and out slightly and is an unusual circular ribbed design and as you would expect from Mordan the silver is a good thick gauge. It is in good used condition with the top opening as it should. A suspension ring and a vacant cartouche to the front. There are signs of use around the edge and the original background engraving is worn but this is an unusual patent vesta from the best of makers and the only vesta of this shape that Mordan used for enamel decoration. Fabulous Edwardian Solid Silver SET OF 4 Enamel Menu Holder In Excellent Condition. Skilfully Made by SAMPSON MORDAN. With Shamrock Leaf. Sampson Mordan(1770-1843) Apprentice and assistant of the mechanic John Bramah, established his own business in 1815. The first patent for a"metal pencil with an internal mechanism for propelling the graphite'lead' shaft forward during use" was obtained in 1822(his co-inventor was John Isaac Hawkins) In 1823 Mordan bought out the rights of Hawkins. Entering his first mark as"smallworker" in London Assay Office on 9 June 1823(SM oblong) In 1824 he entered in partnership with Gabriel Riddle, registering a new mark(SM.GR) in London Assay Office. The partnership with Riddle was dissolved in 1836 and he continued the business as S. Mordan& Co. Sampson Mordan died in 1843 and the ... morebusiness was taken over by his sons Sampson(Jr) and Augustus. They were later joined by Edmund George Johnson and Zachariah Watkins who retired in 1879. After the death of Sampson Mordan(Jr) his share of the business passed to his brother Augustus. Joined as partner in 1890 by Harry Lambert Symonds. In 1898 the company was converted to a limited liability company under the name of S. Mordan& Co Ltd. In 1933 the distribution rights on the propelling pencil business were given to L. G. Sloan Ltd. And in 1941, following the destruction of the factory by enemy bombing, the patents were sold to Edward Baker. The firm went into voluntary liquidation in 1952. Between the 1820s and 1870s the firm obtained more of 160 patents for various mechanical pencils. The first spring-loaded mechanical pencil was patented in 1877 and a twist-feed mechanism was developed in 1895. In addition to pencils the firm had a large production line of small silver and gold items. Most of them belonging to the type of"novelties" so popular at the end of the 19th/beginning of the 20th century. However, Sampson Mordan was the only silversmith to make pin cushions of this type at this period The pin cushion is hallmarked with the three wheat sheaves for Chester assay. Antique Pounce Pot Antique Victorian silver travelling pounce pot in the form of an egg made for Jenner& Knewstub by Sampson Mordan. The pot has a gilded interior and weighted base. Fully hallmarked on the internal screw fastener for London 1880 and also stamped with the makers mark for Sampson Mordan. Hallmarked again on the base inside and out. Around the screw fastener the pot has been engraved'Jenner& Knewstub. 33 St. James's Street' Approximately 3.4cms in height and 2.6cms in width. Weight approximately 32g. Nice antique condition. Sampson Mordan Sterling Silver'Small Hatching Chick' Pin Cushion Hallmarked Chester 1908& in Great Condition This is a miniature silver pin cushion in the form of a hatching baby chick emerging from its egg. The silver is fully hallmarked on the base of the pin cushion confirming it was assayed in Chester in 1908(please see second photograph- date letter'H' The hallmark also includes the maker's mark'SM& Co' for Sampson Mordan& Co. Who are regarded as the most desirable manufacturer of pin cushions, etc in the Victorian/Edwardian period. The Sampson Mordan Chick is a design classic. Which they made in a number of sizes and this is the smallest and, in my opinion. The most beautiful. It does have signs of wear to the surface commensurate with age and use and a couple of tiny bruises(one above the left eye and one on the bottom left side of it's breast) that do not detract from the beauty of this superb pin cushion. Although I cannot be certain it looks as though it still has it's original pin cushion. Judging by the colour and wear to the cloth, but I will leave you to look at the photographs and make your own mind up. The length hand engraved with typical foliate detail and a round unengraved bloodstone agate seal to the end, made by Sampson Mordan& Co circa 1880. Internally the mechanism is pushed up using the ring around the middle of the pencil, and the end twists to extend more lead. It i s clearly hallmarked to the side S. Mordan& Co. And also engraved with the name Sydney Peller. There are no other hallmarks but the casing tests as sterling silver.
