Edwardian Silver Pencil Holder Birmingham 1904 JF
Literally a back of the shed find. I am assuming that it is a pencil holder from other similar entries on EBay. It is hallmarked Birmingham(anchor) date letter e(1904) with maker's initials J.F It is rather flat or oval in profile. The surface decoration is rather worn. The collar does not move. Very unusual solid silver pencil holder. Hallmarked in Birmingham in 1910, the makers mark F.W which is Francis Webb. It's in good condition, just a few minor dings and a bit of surface wear, and its nice to have a silver marked chatelaine ring, and of course the mischievous imp on the holder. I've never seen one like that. I've seen a few enamelled crests mounted on these holders, but not like the imp. An antique hallmarked silver pencil holder with an engraved cover. SCROLL DOWN THE LISTING FOR LARGER PICTURES. SIZE The pencil holder measures 6.6cm by 1.0cm excluding the hanging loop. WEIGHT 3.9g excluding the pencil. MARKS The decorated cover is hallmarked for Chester 1914 and marked with the maker's initials'E.B' Probably for E. Baker& Son. The rim around the opening and the top insert with the hanging loop are both stamped with the sterling lion mark. The actual holder is stamped with the sterling lion mark& the date letter'O' 1914) OVERALL CONDITION Good antique condition. Antique Sterling Silver flat pencil holder/Carpenters pencil holder w/ bale&cap
On offer is a very fine antique flat pencil/Carpenter's Pencil Holder. It was also called a Traveling Pencil. In the days when you needed and inkwell to write a letter. It was the custom to carry a pencil, often in a case attached to a watch chain or similar chain to put in a pocket. Women in Victorian times carried cases and wore chatelaines, that were chains worn about the waist and attached items they needed throughout the day. The wide pencils like this were often used by Carpenters and Architects as they broader edge pencil could write on wood and other building materials. This fine case is made of sterling silver and has Sterling marked on the cap very clearly. It has nice engraving in the silver and is undamaged but has a few tiny dings if you look very close up. Antique hallmarked Silver Pencil Holder This gorgeous pencil holder(complete with unsharpened pencil) is made from sterling silver in hexagonal form and all faces are exquisitely decorated with Bright-Cut engraved foliage. There is a vacant cartouche to the top and a fob ring. It is hallmarked for Chester 1907 with the maker’s mark of Frederick Charles Berkeley. This piece is in wonderful condition and looks as if it has seldom if ever been used as I can find no dents or dints on it and the engraved decoration is still beautifully crisp. Please be aware that it is still 108 years old so there will be tiny surface abrasions caused through handling.
