If one needed to go in the night, an empty container was stored within the bottom cabinet. Up top was a basin with a pitcher of water. In the drawer were stored washcloths or hand towels. Carved wooden knobs with mother of pearl inlay, lovely turned columns and legs, solid wood construction and overall wonderful condition for a mid-late 19th century piece. This chest was recently imported from the UK through Edinburgh, Scotland and was manufactured in either Victorian England or Scotland. This is a large piece which stands 58 inches tall and measures 40 inches wide by 23 inches deep. Front to back. This piece was designed to break down for safe transport and will travel in four pieces- the two twist columns, the footed base which stands 13 inches tall and measures 40 inches wide and 23 inches front to back. The surface of this fine commode is a vivid display of flowers and foliage on intermingling vines over a parquetry background. The mounts on either corner are heavily acanthus in nature, rather bold and conforming appropriately with the Rococo naturalism of the pulls and central apron motif. Antique Child's 19th C. Primitive Mahogany Chest of Drawers-Folk Art- AAFA
Read all of this and look at all the photos. This little mahogany childs chest of drawers came out of a Boulder estate last week. All original. Nothing altered little chest is 10 1/16" back to front and 13 1/8" side to side, and 13 1/2" high, with the back splash 2 1/2" The alligator finish is irregular and has a water stain on the top. I didn't want to mess with it. This little gem looks like 1850 period and east coast origin. We do see things in Boulder from early Pennsylvania. Certainly no later than 1870. It has many hand cut small nails that have bled into the wood. The four drawers have been painted pink inside at a later period and measure app. 8 x 11 x 2 1/2. The lower left front rail is partially missing and the right back rail is missing. There is an old crack on the top. They really do not distract from ... morethe piece. The sides are slightly curved. The secondary wood is pine. Again. This is a wonderful little chest in unrestored condition that was likely made on a farm on the east coast 150 years ago. Here is a wonderfully crafted dresser from the 1850's era. It may be later 1880's. One of the paw feet is broken. There are scratches and wear from age. This could use a good cleaning. All the drawers work but could use some help with ease of pulling out and pushing in. Putting wax on the rails often helps. This piece was for the wealthy. You can tell just by looking at it. It is unfortunate that I have to picture this magnificent dresser vanity in my garage. There is so much clutter that it distracts greatly from this beautiful piece of furniture. The marble is a little pitted but can easily be filled in with some acrylic. This came from a large antique estate in Lenox Mass. The mirror attached to this dresser has a very antique feel to it. Antique Tiger Maple Grain Painted Medicine Cabinet – Ca. 1890-1900
I am a cabinetmaker in southeastern Penna. When I have slow down time or between projects I build or refinish various pieces of furniture. I picked up this Ca. 1890- 1900 Victorian Medicine Cabinet. I repaired all loose glue joints, and repainted it in the manor of tiger maple grain. I finished the flush wall mounted cabinet in 2009 and it has not been used since the total rebuild[it has just been sitting around the shop] Minor paint chips on the inside of door leave as is or an easy touch up– see picture.
