Early 18th Century Queen Anne Period Solid Cherry Drop Leaf Dining Table Probably American. C. 1750-70 Primary ... moreWoods: Cherry Secondary Woods: Yellow Pine Item# 100005WPP31 This is a remarkably well preserved original Queen Anne drop leaf dining table with gating legs over pad feet. It features solid tight grained entirely solid single planks of cherry making up the leaves and top. Each with warm patina and character brought to the forefront in a dry lightly glossy and rather early finish. Notwithstanding the significant cracks in the top and the slight warp to one leaf, the table is almost entirely original. These surfaces were repaired at one point, probably in the first quarter of the 20th century, an attempt to heal the shrink cracks along the grains of the very broad boards. To bring the best out of the table, these should eventually have the putty removed from the cracks and be repaired again properly; however, the boards are gorgeous and are full of glow even without being repaired. The leaves hang on fully original hand crafted and forged iron hinges. Each still in place and undisturbed, heavily oxidized with original hand forged screws. The frame is a fully dovetailed pine secondary structure with wonderful oxidization throughout. The gating legs join the frame with original hand forged iron hinges that uniquely swing the legs in a smooth motion- this is a rather rare feature, as legs typically would swing on a pine hinge with a wooden or iron dowel joint. The legs terminate in bold and well carved pad feet, each with excellent form. With wonderful proportions being only 40 1/4" long. This is the perfect length for a hall table in rested form with a chair on either side. In remarkably well preserved condition, the legs mostly free of repairs, an early finish and entirely original hardware, this is an excellent find for any serious collector of works from the Queen Anne period. Comfortably seating four, it is a versatile and very functional piece for regular

However it was not until the last decades of the 18th century that the socio-economic circumstances in England necessitated the wide use of a portable desk in the form of a box which could be used on a table or on one's lap. Hence"Lap Desk" From the end of the 18th. To the end of the 19th century, the writing box featured prominently on military expeditions, travels, libraries and in drawing rooms. Great literature as well as dispatches, contracts, letters and postcards were written on its sloping surface. Both the traveling civilians and the army officers needed compact and strong writing boxes. Which could withstand the rough and tumble of strenuous journeys. This gave rise to the most popular type of 18th century writing box, the military style, or campaign box or travelers lap desk. Typical characteristics of writing boxes of the period: They are rectangular shaped with a flat surface. They are approximately eight to twenty inches long. Ten inches deep when closed and seven inches tall. They open up to a sloping writing surface consisting of two flaps with space under them for paper etc. When open to the writing position. There i

EARLY 18TH CENTURY MAHOGANY CAMPAIGN DRESSING TABLE-VERY RARE & UNIQUE PIECE!
EXTREMELY RARE AMERICAN LATE 18TH CENTURY CAMPAIGN DRESSING TABLE IN MAHOGANY With our special pleasure Bay Colony Antiques is delighted to offer you this excellent very scarce late 18th Century(circa 1790-1800) American Mahogany Federal period Campaign dressing table-vanity/shaving desk table with fully finished interior. For these to be American is first most notable. These were almost always English or French. This comes to us from a remarkable Vermont estate and was purchased at Christies in the 1980's along with most of the furniture collection. This is a portable vanity or shaving table for dressing. The table is designed with a big robust box that has a lift top released by a brass button& lock. Its interior has covered cavities for a wash basin. Brushes, shaving mug and various other compartments all suited for dressing needs. ... moreIt contains a lift top mirror with storage boxes. It has an interesting back cavity designed for holding the legs. We found these legs to on extremely tight so we are not going to attempt to force them off. These have screwed on threads and forcing anything 250 years old made of wood is not a bright idea. This is a wonderful extremely rare gem of American period furniture that measures 30 1/2" long, 21" wide, 34 1/2" with its drop leaves locked open and stands 30" tall.
