Condition: Used Location: Hatfield, United States SquareTrade © AP6.0 This sofa is a n original ca. 1840 American Empire style built from solid Santo Domingo mah ogany moldings with cherry and white ... morepine secondary woods and exquisitely veneered surfaces of bookmatched Santo Domingo crotc h veneer with whole crot ch veneer on lyre faces of arms. The base is constructed of half round and cove pattern all the way around front and sides. Very well formed and veneered. The double cyma-curved crestrail is classic American Empire. Significant positives about this piec e from the perspec tive of an antique f urniture restorer with over 30 years experience show that this piece stands out in at least 3 ways. The original veneering shows no sign of glue failure at all. It is amazin gly intact with very little damage. The finish appears to be original. In excellent condition, and finally, it appears to have been upholstered only twice- the second time ti me with s taples. Usually on a piece like this. The wood is literally riddled by several reupholsterings with tacks and nails and often requires serious repairs to the wood before it can be upholstered again. It was entirely hand made with the highest levels of craf tsmanship- no cut corners. Hand sawn. Hand planed. In other words, pieces like this are usually worn out and are done over so many times that they're no longer usable. Not this piece. It's one of the best p reser ved p ieces I've ever had in my shop- Golden Eagle Cabinet Shop. Negatives- at 170 years of age. One will want to av oid hard use. The re upholstery could use an application of gimp along the crest rail borders- a normal finishing touch not done yet. The original coil springs have diff erent spring so unds for di fferent places one might sit. And as befit s a dowager of mature age. There is a bit of lumpiness. V isually stunning with depth and vibrant color. This piece will proudl y be the centerpiece in your h ome. The recent upholstery was done by the previous own er and needs some refining- a simple ta sk for a good upholsterer. This

American Empire Antique Chest Dresser Crotch Flame Mahogany Thomas Day Ca.1825
Gorgeous American Empire antique chest of drawers.Circa 1825-1830 This piece is quite likely attributed to the work of master cabinet maker. Thomas Day of North Carolina. It has many features consistent with his craftsmanship and style. He was regarded as one of the finest cabinetmakers in the United States. It is quite remarkable considering the state of our country at the time regarding slavery. He was African American, also known as a free man of color by historians. To be such successful entrepreneur and distinguished cabinetmaker was very rare, considering all of the societal norms at the time. Mr. Day served some of the wealthiest clients including two governors of North Carolina.Word spread quickly about his amazing craftsmanship and quality. He was an artisan as well as a cabinetmaker. There is a bronze statue of Mr. Day that stands outside ... morethe entrance to the Museum of History. Located in Raleigh, North Carolina. Wonderful crotch/flame mahogany veneered drawer fronts. The cabinetmaker was an artist as well as a craftsman to select such stunning crotch mahogany and the skill to showcase. It is second to none. The rest of the chest features solid mahogany& solid cherry woods. The secondary woods are pine. This 7 drawer chest has fantastic grains throughout. The entire chest was hand made, no doubt by an early American craftsman. A rare feature is the style of the curved drawer front of the 2 upper drawers on the lower chest(photo) It features incredible precise hand cut dovetail joinery on all 4 corners of each drawer. The drawers also feature hand planed(chamfered) drawer bottoms, with no evidence of machine tooling. The drawers have solid brass inlaid keyhole escutcheons. One drawer is missing the internal lock set, there is no key.I restored the chest from top to bottom, including the two small upper level drawers with book matched flame mahogany veneer. including some veneer restoration on the front of the chest. I restored the finish by hand, with many, many coats of hand rubbed varnish showcasing the spe

Fine American Empire Crotch Mahogany Chest wMirror Carved Paw Feet c1880's
Being offered for sale is this American Empire Mahogany& Crotch Mahogany Chest with Mirror with large Carved Paw Feet circa 1880's. This is a large beautiful 19th century chest that offers a tremendous amount of storage possibilities with all the drawers in crotch mahogany with period glass pulls. The original crotch mahogany framed beveled mirror with powerful S scroll mirror supports and carved Paw Feet with hidden casters intact on the feet and we believe this piece to also have its original finish. This outstanding Empire chest measures 71 inches in height from the floor to the top of the mirror. Height from the floor to the front portion measures 42 1/2 inches, total width of the dresser is 43 1/2 inches, total depth of 23 1/2 inches and weighs approximately 160 lbs. The original beveled mirror measures 23 1/2 inches high by ... more23 1/2 inches wide. This chest does disassemble into 3 pieces for easier handling during shipping and moving. All of the locks are intact on this piece but we do not have the key. The original beveled mirror does show some streaking and spotting as common in antique mirrors. And the mirror does pivot front to back to adjust for viewing. The left mirror support does present with an old repair that seems solid and tight, the right plumage above the foot shows some chipping and there is an area of missing veneer on the left side edge at the top and a cluster of scratches on the left side panel this is typical of these Empire pieces and doesn't affect the integrity of the piece by no means, just a part of the time worn characteristics these old pieces have endured over the past 100 years or so. Just a splendid Empire chest that would be a great addition to that Empire bedroom that offers great storage with classic Empire style. Please view. American Empire Antique Wig Chest Dresser Crotch Flame Mahogany~Marble Top 1825
Here we have a very Rare Empire Dresser for your consideration. This is a very fine Wishbone Mirrored Dresser with side wig curio cabinets. These dressers have always been the Cadilac of Empire Dressers. But this one is one of the finest we have ever seen. The burled or Flame Mahogany is fantastic. The colors are just beautiful. We do not have the exact history. But the party we bought the dresser from, told us that this dresser was saved in Katrina from the Huricane in New Orleans. It was transported north and sold to raise money for the people who once owned it there. We bought it from the next party who purchased it. The dresser is of such fine quality, and has all original parts. The only thing it may need is some new screws in the back when the wig cabinets mount. At the moment it is all assembled and they were not needed. But when the ... moredresser comes to its new home, that is one addition we would suggest is new screws in the back area. The wood on every side is pristine on this piece. The only thing you would find is normal wear from a dresser of such a grand age. All that is needed is a nice polish and this piece is ready to set up and be displayed with pride. The dresser is 77" tall by 43" wide by 21" deep. The mirror attaches on each curio side with wooden screws and original knobs. The drawer fronts have the carving at the top and bottoms and the matched grain of the wood is outstanding. This piece could be by the famous cabinet maker Thomas Day. As even the sides of the dresser have fantastic matched graining. The hand made dove tails and brass locks, are all top notch and fine quality. The marble top inset is beautiful thick Italian Marble with nice grain and detail. There are no chips, nor cracks on the marble. It could use a polish from a marble professional. But the patina and wear only adds charactor to the piece. The drawers are all working and in great condition. The piece is not on rollers, and we have not turned it over to see if it ever had them or not. We are selling this beauti

Authentic 1850's American Empire Ogee Mirror Flame Mahogony
Up for auction is a very nice 1850's American Empire Ogee Mirror! This is in great shape. Especially for being around 160 years old. It was my great grandmothers, but now it's time to thin out some of our collection. Everything is original, except for the glass which was replaced in the 80's, due to some staining behind the glass. The dimensions are 36.5"wide and 24.5" high, but can be mounted however you like. I am starting the bidding low, but am placing a reserve. Shipping for this item is a little expensive, due to the packaging required and the cost of the special double walled box needed to ship without the item being damaged. Please contact me with any questions. Happy bidding! Sincerley, Jason Posted with

Early American Empire Crotch Mahogany Chest of Drawers
Outstanding early American Empire Chest of Drawers that has been in my family for generations. Quite possibly the work of cabinetmaker Thomas Day. Who worked in North Carolina in the early 1800s. I've been told that this piece dates to the 1820s and is in exceptional condition, despite two small spots of missing veneer and one damaged drawer knob. I'm told that everything on it is hand made and stunning. Restored, it would be much more valuable.

American Empire Crotch Mahogany Drop Center Dresser w Swivel Mirror c1840
American Empire Crotch Mahogany Drop Center Dresser with Swivel Mirror c1840 Being presented for sale is this wonderful classic American Empire Mahogany& Crotch Mahogany Drop Center Dresser with Swivel Mirror and Glove Box Drawers. This fine 19th century dresser features its original glass drawer pulls. Early hand-cut dove-tailed ends on the drawers and powerful S scrolls that flank the base. The ogee framed mirror rests between the tall scroll top arm supports, we believe the mirror to be an older replacement and is nice and clear. The drop center base features smaller glove box drawers on each side with ogee drawer fronts and below additional storage is found in the four larger drawers below. Measurements: 78 1/2 inches tall to top of mirror 44 1/2 inches high to top of base sides 40 1/2 inches high to center of dresser base 45 1/2 ... moreinches wide 19 inches deep weighs approximately 145 lbs This American Empire dresser is solid and tight and has a beautiful presence. All the locks are intact on the drawers but we do not have the key. The interior of the drawers has been painted some time ago and the mirror frame and base does present with some mild veneer losses. Which I have tried to show in the pictures nothing major in my opinion for being approximately 170 years old and common in these period Empire pieces. There is also a mild age crack on the top of the glove drawers behind the mirror supports. A wonderful piece of American History that would be a lovely companion to that Empire Bed. Please view. What a sweet chest of drawers. Salesmans sample, circa 1850. Made of Walnut secondary wood pine. It measures 9 inches tall 9 1/2 inches wide 5 3/4 deep The chest has a water stain on the top. I have never tried to bleach it out. It looks to have been finished in the past. The rear of one of the drawers looks like it had been nibbled on. In it's past, see photo. I have owned it for 25 years purchased it from an estate in Maine. You can see in the photo that they did a repair to the top left corner of the top drawer Patched with care but the oppisit corner has a chip yet to be fixed. The sample shows very well and the Walnut has depth in the grains. So nice to look at. Early American Mahogany Empire Vanity With Mirror Claw Feet
Another great example of a well kept piece from about 1870. It's a real piece of American made furniture back when people cared about quality and weren't rushed. Overall construction is of solid imported mahogany. The crotch mahogany around the mirror frame and drawer face are of course veneer, that truly is the only way to get the grain that looks like that. The entire cabinet is built like a tank, all handcrafted of the finest materials. I call this a vanity, some may call it a dressing table. It's an excellent cleaned original finish and needs nothing. measures: 43"w, 23"d, 66" tall Call me JD@ 479-283-1816 for a delivery quote or any other inquires. We deal in superior antique furniture. American Empire Thomas Day attr. Flame Crotch Mahogany Work Side Sewing Signed
I have owned this piece of furniture for several years trying to understand it's hybrid design of American Empire. I came to understand that it was called vernacular because it did not fit precisely into any style of the period. I had heard of the Freeman of color cabinetmaker. Thomas Day who worked in North Carolina and is acknowledged as America's pre-eminent craftsman working in the 1800's. I now know that he improvised traditional designs to reflect his own personal tastes. His craftsmanship was superlative with apprentices from both black and white journeyman. I also have come to understand that certain key points about his furniture helps identify itself. His choice of exotic and expensive veneers were masterfully matched. Being able to afford steam power equipment, he was able to produce veneers as thin as 1/16 of an inch. ... moreHis precise use of dovetailing to build drawers of cabinets. Nearly all of his furniture is not signed, most is acknowledged through attribution. This superlative example is particularly rare in that it is signed. The family history of a Mary Nye is written on the bottom of the top drawer probably in the hand of Thomas Day. The two drawer work table has letters inscribed in pencil on their sides: a"T" on both sides of the top drawer; a"D" on both sides of the bottom drawer. The letters match the script of the family history underneath the top drawer. Also. On the bottom of the table top is a large letter"D. The table is constructed with wrought iron nails. The dovetailing of the drawers are designed such that the drawer front overlaps the sides to prevent them from interfering with the action of the drawer. The drawers also feature hand-planed chamfered bottoms. The losses of some of the molding reveals a very thin 1/16" flame crotch veneer. The book matching of the veneers are masterful. The design and craftsmanship of this piece easily makes it attributable to Mr. Day. But to have pencil markings to additionally identify the table leave no room

Rare JW Meeks Vanity Petticoat Mirror American Empire Marble Top
A awesome find. American empire circa 1850-60 NY made vanity/petticoat mirror. Last one of these I seen I actually sold about eight years ago at auction for 4500$. Never seen another since. This one I've had a good while but time to move on to the next stop. It's been restored to a brilliant condition And is very clean. A unique model in every way with its petticoat mirrored bottom supporting a marble top and then a harp holding another vanity mirror above. It's very early and would venture to say could be even before 1850. Crotch mahogany everywhere Makes it really pop. Look at the escutcheon made of abalone. The mirror is supported by dowels that do into the back board and a single threaded bolt from the underside snugs it down. Great design, great detail and a rich history. We are very sure this was manufactured by the JW Meeks ... morecompany of Ny. A true rare museum type American made piece her for sale on the open market. Measures: 64"tall, 40"wide, 20" deep.
