It was found lined with a layer of newspaper dating from 1839-1840, ... moreso we are guessing this piece dates to the early part of the 1800s. The actual chest appears to be made from pine, which as far as we can tell is a bit unusual for a sugar chest. The box sides/top are all made from one slab of wood, so it is made from old large timber. The chest has one large deep compartment and then a small drawer in the bottom, each with a lock. We do not have the keys to the locks. It has low, simple bracket feet. The hardware is old, but most likely not the original, as the chest came with one of the original knobs loose inside. The knobs that are on there now are similar to the original. It was also painted with a brown wash at some point. The edges are all dovetailed, and there are old square nails used in the construction. This is a beautiful piece of primitive americana that most likely originates from the southern region, somewhere between North Carolina and Georgia. The proceeds from this sale will be going towards our local humane society. Fantastic antique New Hampshire Chippendale chest of drawers. Constructed from pine. This piece has been stained a beautiful deep reddish brown tone. The chest has five graduated doors, each with sturdy dovetail construction and brass willow mount pulls and escutcheons. The chest has a classic overhanging molded top, which is balance my simple bracketed feet at the piece's base. This chest probably dates from the late 18th century or early 19th century. Overall. The chest is in fair to good antique condition, but does have some wear and dings commensurate with age and use. One of the escutcheons also has a break near the top, as you can see from the pictures below. Otherwise no significant damage or visible repairs. This chest stands 41" tall and measures 38 3/4" wide and 19 1/2" deep.
