Gorgeous American Empire antique chest of drawers.Circa 1825-1830 This piece is quite likely attributed to the work of master cabinet maker. Thomas Day of North Carolina. It has many features consistent with his craftsmanship and style.He was regarded as one of the finest cabinetmakers in the United States. It is quite remarkable considering the state of our country at the time regarding slavery.He was African American, also known as a free man of color by historians.To be such successful entrepreneur and distinguished cabinetmaker was very rare, considering all of the societal norms at the time. Mr. Day served some of the wealthiest clients including two governors of North Carolina.Word spread quickly about his amazing craftsmanship and quality. This 7 drawer chest has fantastic grains throughout.The entire chest was hand made, no doubt by an early American craftsman. A rare feature is the style of the curved drawer front of the 2 upper drawers on the lower chest(photo) It features incredible precise hand cut dovetail joinery on all 4 corners of each drawer. The drawers also feature hand planed(chamfered) drawer bottoms, with no evidence of machine tooling.The drawers have solid brass inlaid keyhole escutcheons. It has 2 rolled drawers and a large original mirror. It may be a Southern piece. It is a fresh local estate purchase from a Ga Octogenarian's home. This piece is in very nice condition. There are a few small repairs and a couple of areas that are missing veneer/ have damage. There is one small piece of molding that is missing between the drawers. The crotch mahogany is beautiful in its detail and color. The mirror is in very nice condition with a couple of small areas where it has a little silvering loss or ghosting. Mid 1800's Crotch mahogany Dresser Heavily carved. 3/4 carved columns Size: 52" tall. 49" wide, 24" deep This dresser has wide boards. Top board is is 23 1/2" x48 1/2" Sides have 19 1/2" wide boards 7 drawers: 3 over 4 12 glass pulls Top drawers has a veneer band around the edges. Hairy carved lion paw feet. Fine dovetail drawers open smoothly. In great condition for the age. Back boards need to be better secured. A few minor imperfections/surface scratches on the piece but overall beautiful for an 1800's dresser! I prefer local pickup but would be open to working with buyers supplied transport for pickup.

American Empire Antique Wig Chest Dresser Crotch Flame Mahogany~Marble Top 1825
Here we have a very Rare Empire Dresser for your consideration. This is a very fine Wishbone Mirrored Dresser with side wig curio cabinets. These dressers have always been the Cadilac of Empire Dressers. But this one is one of the finest we have ever seen. The burled or Flame Mahogany is fantastic. The colors are just beautiful. We do not have the exact history. But the party we bought the dresser from, told us that this dresser was saved in Katrina from the Huricane in New Orleans. It was transported north and sold to raise money for the people who once owned it there. We bought it from the next party who purchased it. The dresser is of such fine quality, and has all original parts. The only thing it may need is some new screws in the back when the wig cabinets mount. At the moment it is all assembled and they were not needed. But when the ... moredresser comes to its new home, that is one addition we would suggest is new screws in the back area. The wood on every side is pristine on this piece. The only thing you would find is normal wear from a dresser of such a grand age. All that is needed is a nice polish and this piece is ready to set up and be displayed with pride. The dresser is 77" tall by 43" wide by 21" deep. The mirror attaches on each curio side with wooden screws and original knobs. The drawer fronts have the carving at the top and bottoms and the matched grain of the wood is outstanding. This piece could be by the famous cabinet maker Thomas Day. As even the sides of the dresser have fantastic matched graining. The hand made dove tails and brass locks, are all top notch and fine quality. The marble top inset is beautiful thick Italian Marble with nice grain and detail. There are no chips, nor cracks on the marble. It could use a polish from a marble professional. But the patina and wear only adds charactor to the piece. Antique American Empire c. 1850s Dresser Exc Flame Crotch-Cut Mahogany 6 Drawers
A very special piece! My mother has moved from the family home to a much smaller condo and sadly doesn't have room for several family treasures. This flame mahogany American Empire-style dresser. Estimated to have been made in the 1850s, is gorgeous. The dresser's mirror-image crotch-grain mahogany is absolutely beautiful, a hallmark of quality in fine furniture construction. The curved front is lovely, as are the carved backboard and skirt. The finish on the front, sides, and top is glossy; the back is unfinished. All six drawers work perfectly and are outfitted with mushroom-turned wooden knobs. My parents originally purchased this dresser from an antiques dealer in upstate New York and it's been in their smoke-free household for more than 50 years. No maker's mark is evident. It is in very good condition with some nicks, ... morescratches, etc. that are visible in photos. A small interior rail for one drawer is missing but it does not seem to affect operation of the drawer. Outstanding early American Empire Chest of Drawers that has been in my family for generations. Quite possibly the work of cabinetmaker Thomas Day. Who worked in North Carolina in the early 1800s. I've been told that this piece dates to the 1820s and is in exceptional condition, despite two small spots of missing veneer and one damaged drawer knob. I'm told that everything on it is hand made and stunning. Restored, it would be much more valuable.

This fine 19th century dresser features its original glass drawer pulls. Early hand-cut dove-tailed ends on the drawers and powerful S scrolls that flank the base. The ogee framed mirror rests between the tall scroll top arm supports, we believe the mirror to be an older replacement and is nice and clear. The drop center base features smaller glove box drawers on each side with ogee drawer fronts and below additional storage is found in the four larger drawers below. This is for a Antique Crotch Mahogany Dresser with Acanthus Carved Columns Picture Framed Mirror. This is a wonderful antique crotch mahogany dresser with acanthus carved columns on each side of the original picture framed mirror and on each side of the dresser base. The fancy carved columns flow down to a heavy claw foot on each side with the original wheels under them. Some wheels made need a little oil to get them to roll freely. All drawers have glass knobs although some of them are not original. The top has some stains but you may be able to just buff them out if you decide to. The mirror is original with some fading that you can use as is or replace it with a new mirror. The drawers are held together with handcut dovetails and the inside are made of quarter sawn oak. The two glove boxes open to the side. The base has two doors and 2 drawers. It has keys that lock. There is some applied carving in the center of the bottom skirt. The doors measure 10" x 24" The drawers are 27" x 10" 48" wide x 37" tall to the glove boxes. 21" deep in the center. The upper part of the dresser is 42" wide x 48" tall. The Wig Storage 7" deep x 7" wide and acts as the arms to the mirror. The mirror frame is 27 1/2" w x 41" tall. The mirror is 17" x 30" The crown is 51" wide x 11" deep. The white shaped marble is topped by a tilting mirror held by gorgeous shaped supports. Transitional between the Empire and Victorian periods this dresser offers the best of both. American Empire Thomas Day attr. Flame Crotch Mahogany Work Side Sewing Signed
I have owned this piece of furniture for several years trying to understand it's hybrid design of American Empire. I came to understand that it was called vernacular because it did not fit precisely into any style of the period. I had heard of the Freeman of color cabinetmaker. Thomas Day who worked in North Carolina and is acknowledged as America's pre-eminent craftsman working in the 1800's. I now know that he improvised traditional designs to reflect his own personal tastes. His craftsmanship was superlative with apprentices from both black and white journeyman. I also have come to understand that certain key points about his furniture helps identify itself. His choice of exotic and expensive veneers were masterfully matched. Being able to afford steam power equipment, he was able to produce veneers as thin as 1/16 of an inch. ... moreHis precise use of dovetailing to build drawers of cabinets. Nearly all of his furniture is not signed, most is acknowledged through attribution. This superlative example is particularly rare in that it is signed. The family history of a Mary Nye is written on the bottom of the top drawer probably in the hand of Thomas Day. The two drawer work table has letters inscribed in pencil on their sides: a"T" on both sides of the top drawer; a"D" on both sides of the bottom drawer. The letters match the script of the family history underneath the top drawer. Also. On the bottom of the table top is a large letter"D. The table is constructed with wrought iron nails. The dovetailing of the drawers are designed such that the drawer front overlaps the sides to prevent them from interfering with the action of the drawer. The drawers also feature hand-planed chamfered bottoms. The losses of some of the molding reveals a very thin 1/16" flame crotch veneer. The book matching of the veneers are masterful. The design and craftsmanship of this piece easily makes it attributable to Mr. Day. But to have pencil markings to additionally identify the table leave no room
