Outstanding Mid-Century Modern Lamp Base Italian c. 1950s/ 60s Striking 16' vintage pottery lamp base with stylised( s gr affito technique) fish design. The colours are stunning with a mix of blue s, white and chartreuse to a black(matte finish) groun d. Marked Italy to the base- maker unknown Offered in very good- excellent condition with just minor signs of age and previous use as might be expected. There is a hairline within the chartreuse glaze at the top of the lamp( shown) but this appears not to be within the body itself. The baze is missing from the base but could easily re-placed once the lamp has been re-wired and finally there is one small fir ing fault where a small piece has come away from the body and re-attached itself a couple of inches further up. Midcentury Vase, Sgrafo Modern, Modernist Vase, Eames Era, Raymor, Bitossi Vase
Rare and beautiful pair of vintage porcelain Sgrafo Modern Vases from the fine German ceramic design house headed by Peter Muller(Mueller) Peter Muller owned a small porcelain factory beginning in 1955. His brother Klaus was his partner. Soon after establishing the factory. Peter developed a new technique of making porcelain: He put two to three layers of porcelain(with varying colors) on top of one another and then notched into the material. This method allowed the different colors of the layers to become visible. This patented technique is called Sgrafo. And he was the only one who realized it in the 1950s and 1960s. These Sgrafo Modern vases have a unique style and color glaze. Which is very different from the other German porcelain products of the period. The finish is somewhat shiny. With hints of muted green and muted white in the porcelain ... moreglaze. The stylish indents have hints of muted gray. Each elegant. And yes, tres chic vase has a triangular base and a twisted form. It is made of 3 layers of porcelain(white, black, white) Each vase is signed with the Sgrafo Modern Germany hallmark. These vases are very collectible and rarely available in the USA. Condition is mint on one vase. And the other vase is mint except for a tiny loss of glaze at tip of vase- less than 1/8" and not visible at all, unless the vase is tilted into the light. It is so tiny to see. I could not get a photo of it. Each vase is a nice display size at approximately 8 1/2" in height. 2 1/2" width, and 1 1/2" depth. This auction is for the pair of Sgrafo Modern vases. They are a fabulous design statement for the Midcentury home or office decor- a great compliment to Knoll. Jonathan Adler, Herman Miller. Midcentury Vase, Bernard Rooke, Raymor, Bitossi, Eames Era Pottery, Fantoni
Very rare 1960/1970s era ceramic vase/vessel by famed British artist Bernard Rooke. Who has been a leader of the British Studio Pottery School. And is still active today! Bernard Rooke was born in 1938 and has had a long and distinguished career in both ceramics and drawing. In 1960. He shared studio space with another British great ceramicist, Alan Wallwork. Along with Wallwork and others. Rooke reacted against the then prevailing influence of Asian inspired ceramic craft/art, which was personified by the pottery of Bernard Leach. Rooke's aesthetic was less minimal and spare. Less elegant and in search of perfection- less quiet. Instead Rooke's works are much more spontaneous and active. Free form and organic/imperfect in structure; they appear to explode with energy/movement. When examining some of his work. He appears to have attacked ... morethe clay with a brutalist intensity. He often used very unglamorous colors and raw/textured surface glazes. While working into the clay a variety of cuts. Patterns, layerings, incisions, and imprints. Often he would use oxide stains to further enhance his aesthetic. In his more fine art works. Rooke could be compared to Peter Voulkos in his approach to clay as a material of surface manipulation and abstract shaping. This particular work by Rooke is a great example of his free form/organic approach to ceramics. Are those vines growing on the vase's surface? Or are they just abstract shapes positioned to create a sense of movement along the ridges and rim of the vase? Whatever they may be. The end result is a truly unique wonderful work of ceramic art. And easily recognized as one created by Rooke. This rather large vase is in excellent. Age appropriate vintage condition. It appears to have been barely used. I see no condition issues. Dimensions are approximately 7.5" height. 11" length, and 3.5" depth. The vase is stamped Rooke. Rooke's work is not easily found in the USA. This is a very beautiful and rare vintage. 1970s, handpainted ceramic vase, made in Germany by the famous Steuler Company. The slanted design of the vase. The art deco/Leger influenced painted design and striking colors are all very 1970s chic style. The vase is in excellent age appropriate vintage condition. I see no chips. Cracks or restorations. The vase appears not to have ever been used. The handpainted design is in great condition also. The vase measures approximately 7 inches height. 6 inches length, and 2 1/2 inches depth. Model home builders made a point to hang a goose neck lamp upon a wall when decorating their models because the gooseneck lamp was to early mid century model homes what granite counters were to model homes in the post-millennium. Was designing a number of lamps at this time and one of his trademarks was the"ball side switch" upon the light shade which would appear in enameled metal or wood and give visual substance to the switch. The figures show elaborate detail to the fine coiled bundles covering the surface. The reflector lamp was part of the new effort by designers to control and manipulate light to enhance interior design and decor. The reflector permits light to be placed downward or to either side of the lamp. This allows for the illumination of art objects or other furnishings. It was a clever tool and from 1950-1955 the reflector lamp was in its heyday. A cream colored fiberglass shade adorns a red enameled aluminum shade. The company was one of the most active in producing modern lighting in Italy and was based out of Monza. When the"Italian Miracle" occurred after WWII. Modernism and handcrafted, unique designs were the valuable commodities that brought back the Italian economy. Raymor was started by Richard Morganthau. He realized there was a need to bring progressive modern design from Europe to the USA. Raymor entered into a relationship with Italian. Danish and Swedish designers to market their designs in the US. Most of these firms wares had never been exported to ... morethe US and so these goods were completely fresh and new to a hungry modern-minded US buyer. Arredoluce worked with Raymor to produce several Arredoluce lamps and market them in the US thorugh Raymor showrooms and catalogs. The most famous of these was the iconic triennale floor lamp which was an immediate success. This lamp is another one marketed at this same time and is a gorgeous example of the Arredoluce design philosophy. Sweeping. Sensual curves accent biomorphic shapes in a playful splash of color. Shades of red. Yellow and blue make a powerful visual statement and the lamp is simply stunning! While it evokes the Triennale with its color. One simply can't ignore the mastery of line displayed by this design. It flows so beautifully and is almost sensual. The curves are repeated in the biomorphic kidney shaped black enameled metal base. A turn switch turns on one. Then two and finally all three lamps. Raymor sold these to the wealthy and powerful. The prices were out of reach for the average American and very few were manufactured. The reflector permits light to be placed downward or to either side of the lamp. This allows for the illumination of art objects or other furnishings. At the MOMA lighting competition of 1951 a number of the winners utilized some sort of reflection system and much mid century lighting employed reflection and diffusion to augment direct lighting. This lamp captures three of the mid century trends in lighting. It has the'starlight' cone to diffuse light and add visual sparkle, a tripod base to elevate the lamp and'float' ... morethe lamp to provide a visual lightness and it has a reflector to direct the light where desired. It's truly has achieved the mid century trifecta! A red enameled aluminum shade adorns a gold aluminum body with black enameled tripod legs of steel. This lamp captures your eye the moment you see it and the eye loves the play between the gold and red. Like some mid century treasure it beckons one to turn it on with the white pushbutton switch on the side of the cone. This lamp is in good condition. There are some dents to the aluminum shade and the enamel shows wear on both the bottom and to the rim of the shade where it has been handled. The gold aluminum cone has some scratches and wear near the switch. Consistent with its age. The reflector swivel and frame shows tarnish. An extremely rare find in this signed Fantoni for Raymor vase. Excellent'female' form. Hand molded clay with a multi-colored drip glaze and a large vase measuring 12 1/2" tall, 5" wide, about 3 1/2" deep. It does have some flaws from 60 years of handling but it looks great. See pics and condition report above. This vase displays quite well as found; the subtle nature and location of the flaws make it a perfect candidate for restoration.
