This is a very nice example of a Charles Eames Herman Miller shell chair with a very rare Zenith mark. The Z is cast into the fiberglass of the chair with the expoxy that was used to mount the shockmounts. It is a factory mark that has fiberglass strands running through it. This is not a rope edge chair. The chair comes with the pictured. High quality aftermarket walnut dowel base. There are no cracks and the edge of the chair is in nice shape. It has great fiber definition and a very nice coloration. The base is included in this auction and the shell will ship in one package and the base, screws and washers will ship in a second box. This is an early to mid 1950s 2nd generation chair produced by Zenith of Gardena. California with 3 inch(larger) pucks and thick fiberglass and a heavy base. This has all its original rubber glides. It has no Herman Miller markings at all, which is typical of an early chair like this. There is a hand written number 46 on the chair from the factory and a metal tag that says J.L.H. 19715 which is from the company that purchased the chair and used it originally(possibly The J.L. Original X-bases and feet are good with original paint/finish wear to legs, and some rust/rubber cracking at feet. These two chairs were found disassembled without original screws and washers when acquired. New washers and correct reproduction early Zenith screws have been provided. The chairs will be disassembled for shipping purposes and a large headed Phillips screwdriver will be necessary for buyer to reassemble. The threads are in the narrow configuration so that you can put a rocker base. H-base, Eiffel Tower base, PCA(pivoting cast aluminum) Office base, or another Eames designed bases. A set of 4 fiberglass bucket or armed shell chairs in a khaki gray(classic mid century color) that swivel! Purchased from the estate of a gentleman who worked for Heywood Wakefield for over 35 years heading the Lloyds division in MI. The fiberglass bucket portion of the chair is made by Krueger of Green Bay WI. The base is typical of Wakefield and all are in excellent condition with no cracks or chips to fiberglass. Nice color and good working mechanics of swivel bases. The bases are really nice because they return to original position so look of room is not dishevelled. The seat height is 16" width from outside arm to arm is 15" and top of back is 29" The legs are brushed tinted metal finish and go perfect with this khaki color. They are signed with embossed double triangles, only, apparently indicating they were among the first shells molded by Summit Plastics after Zenith. They have an early Herman Miller paper patent number label. Originally these great shells were all on H-bases which you can see by looking at the shock mounts. No bases offered in this sale. Very Collectible! Excellent ambiance for your MCM place. All the shock mounts are present-they are starting to deteriorate. Narrow configuration so you can put them on nifty Eames bases like Eiffel Tower, X-Bases, Rockers, H-bases-Black or Bright Zinc, Dowel, Office PCA or others. Vintage EAMES Gray HERMAN MILLER Mid Century Modern Fiberglass Shell Arm Chair
Here is a vintage 1970's Charles Eames designed fiberglass shell chair for Herman Miller. Manufactured by Cincinnati Milacron"C" with asterisk symbol. Gray color. Sturdy and usable. Back edge of right arm has a small CRACK WITH A CHIP{please see images#16. 17, 18 with pointer} There are also a few grooves/scratches on front bottom left edge with a small chip on underside of edge(please see image image#20 with pointer) and left arm has some surface loss/wear(please see image#8 with pointer) Original feet and legs are in good condition. Early Production Charles Eames Herman Miller Shell Arm Chair Early to mid 1950's Eames 2nd Generation Charles Eames design shell arm chair. Large shock mounts. Most likely used to have the Venice label. Heavy thick black metal"X" base legs. Very thick and visible fiberglass, butterscotch tone. Much heavier weight than later produced shell chairs. In good vintage condition, some fading color variations in the seat. This would be a great addition to your mid century modern or eclectic décor.
