Mid Century Modern Witco World Map Globe Framed Wood Sculpture
Here we have an original Witco World Map framed wood sculpture from the early 1960's. A massive piece that measures approx. 63" x 33" It is comprised of wroughly sculpted pieces of wood attached to a cavnas covered wood board and is in a boxed framed with an additional wood frame about that. The cavnas behind the wood continent pieces is painted green and blue to be as the sea. The brass rod that wraps around the one side with the wood pieces at the top and bottom of the map i believe are supposed to the globe mountings. It is a very impressive and iconic piece that captures the art and design of the 1960s. We obtained this from a former employee of witco. Bill Mannon, who told us that he had worked for the company as a carver in the 1960's. He described some of the process involved in making this piece. He would receive ... morethe designs and then would use a chainsaw to cut out the pieces wood. After sculpted the pieces he would then burn them, polish them and then wax them. He didn't mention anything beyond that involving this partical piece although he did tell us about some of the other pieces that he sculpted while working for Witco including a head board that he carved for Edie Adams' bed. He seemed totally obliviously about the more recent popularity of the witco tiki mod items and was shocked and thrilled when we wanted to shake his hand and when we asked him to sign it. It was a really nice moment for him i think and neat encounter for us. He had it in his possession for the last 50+ years and it was in his basement for a large portion of that time. The wood seems to have survived nicely showing just the ocassional little rubbed spot or small ding and the metal rod is a little tarnished and dirty. The canvas on the other hand is speckled with stains that could possibly be mildew or mold and some of the metal hardware/screws and staples are rusty. Mid Century Modern Witco Like Wood Carved Abstract Guitar Wall Art 48" X 12"
Being offered for auction is a vintage Witco carved wood abstract guitar hanging wall art. Size: The overall dimension is 48" wide X 12 wide 4 3/8" depth. The guitar measures 37 1/2" long X 5" at widest part of body. Condition: The wall art is in very fine vintage condition. The piece is not marked Witco but it is in the same style and period. I am unsure if all Witco pieces were marked. The guitar is affixed to a fiber type board and painted white and a mustard color. In picture 2 you will see there is very light staining on the lower left corner on the mustard color caused by years of basement storage. It is really light and does not detract from the overall appearance of the wall art. The wood frame around the art shows light scuffs/scratches and a few minor nicks and can be viewed in pictures 6 thru 9. Scratch cover ... morewill eliminate these areas. The guitar has a few scratches shown in picture 4 on the top(peg head) and two spots that appear look like sap from the wood but this is just my guess. I have not tried to remove the spots. Elvis's Graceland has a Witco Tiki bar and stools. But this one has the ACTUAL tiki god's faces carved in the bar and in the bar stools. The bar is boomerang shaped with a tiki god face carved in the top of the bar. This is all wood carved! This is in all original condition as from Witco when made. We bought recently replacement leopard fabric to redo this bar and stools. We will include the 4 yards of the replacement fabric with this bar. The black vinyl tops of the bar stools have some slit tears and we will leave the repair up to the buyer. Who may decide to even put leopard vinyl on the tops of these stools! We decided that we will leave this in all ... moreoriginal condition. For the new buyer as they may want to reupholster it differently. Estate fresh! Mod vintage Witco Fire Dancers wall hanging in excellent original condition. This is one of Witco's most iconic pieces and measures 48" wide. 25" tall and 4" deep. Made of flamed red cedar and bright orange/tangerine burlap with painted accents. Looks GREAT! A few typical areas of light surface splitting/wear on frame. Nothing major and could be touched up easily(pics) All figures are complete and glossy. 4th dancer had 1/2" tip of left foot come loose. It has been reglued(see pic) There are a few very minor surface scuffs to- hard to see but mentioned for completeness. Burlap is a little dusty but very clean. Vintage set of TWO(2) one larger, one smaller, REINDEER figures or sculptures, in solid, very lightweight wood. Elongated, abstracted form, yet easily recognized as deer or reindeer. Each has a tiny, fuzzy, bright red pompom nose which was added- most likely- by the owner, to make these deer more"Rudolph" like. Cute. They are unsigned. But look like the Witco brand of mid 20th century, Hawaiian tiki-god influenced, modernist wood objects, such as the similarly elongated"cat-giraffe" wall plaque made famous by the series: Mad Men.
