It was the favorite of young moderns who used it to illuminate bedrooms, living rooms. Halls and dens. Model home builders made a point to hang a goose neck lamp upon a wall when decorating their models because the gooseneck lamp was to early mid century model homes what granite counters were to model homes in the post-millennium. Gerald Thurston. Lightolier's in-house designer had designed many gooseneck lamps and was always finding ways to introduce new style and practicality into the designs he crafted for Lightolier. This lamp has two smaller conical shades. These use the smaller appliance sized standard base bulbs. Allowing for a smaller more stylish shade. ... moreFor the most part up until the early fifties. The gooseneck lamps had larger shades. Thurston was one of the pioneers who tried to bring the shade size down and make it more compact. This lamp is very rakish and sleek- the utmost of sophistication for 1954! This lamp has the unusual double push-button design. This allowed for instant gratification for the user and turned on or off the desired light instantly without having to cycle through a three way switch. This was particularly popular when the lamp was placed in a guest room with two beds and this would not interrupt someone's sleep by switching on their lamp in the cycling process. This lamp is in nice condition. There are a few scrapes and minor dings. But the lamp is extremely presentable and hardly shows its age at all. Not many of these are left any more. MAGNIFICENT! GINO SARFATTI FIVE-SHADE CHANDELIER FOR LIGHTOLIER! C irca 195 0(Dimensions: 29" wide shade) HUGE& IMPOSING! Brushed Brass and Enamel ed Aluminum This is a spectacular and impressive chandelier! Lightolier really went all out in the fifties and hired the most famous designers to pen designs for them. Isamu Noguchi. Maurizio Tempestini, Edward Wormley and Gino Sarfatti were some of the designers whose genius graced Lightolier showrooms and could be found in the best interiors in the world! This foresight was owed to Lightolier's President who traveled to Italy in late 1949 and visited with Sarfatti and several other designers who had wowed the world in a modern lighting showing earlier that year. Everyone wanted the new Italian look in lighting! The elements of Italian style were pretty simple: clean. Light, futuristic ... moreand lean. This design is one of the most expensive Lightolier chandeliers one could buy in the mid-fifties. With a 29" reflector dish it was also one of the largest. Most fixtures were running with 24" shades at this time. It provides epic quantities of reflected light from the white enameled aluminum reflector dish and is the absolute perfect illumination centerpiece for a superb mid century interior. This chandelier is in excellent condition. The shades and brushed brass look almost near mint! It's hard to believe they are over sixty years old! A true testament to the care this fixture has received. There are some minor dings and some bends to the aluminum reflector dish. Which are inevitable after this much time, but it still looks spectacular! So few of these have survived the decades and a minty one like this is a breathtaking find! A piece like this truly completes a designer interior! While many m odernists are familiar with the cymbal shade tower Philip Johnson penned and developed with Richard Kelly for Philip Johnson's Glass House in New Canaan. Connecticut. Lost to history is hi s earlier lamp- ... morethe 1949 New Design lamp! Made in very limited quantit i es and priced at a sum the average person would earn in a week or two, it was understandably marketed to the most affluent modern minded in the middle of the last century. Th is lamp. Like his later. Now iconic design was also designed as a standing reading lamp with a profile as low as 42" which can be placed next to a Mies sofa or Hans Wegner chair to provide perfect reading light! This lamp was partially restored by its own er and has fresh electrical wiring. Dual sockets and a polarized p lug for safety. The brass is in good condition. But shows its age with tarnish and a few minor dings to the base. A foot switch operates the lamp and turns it on or off for the ultimate in convenience. Original black enamel. With white interior, brass anodized support, retains all original rubber feet to the underside of the crescent shaped base. Plastic diffuser is nice as well. With no cracks or burn marks, however there is one minor dimple to the plastic(pictured) from heat where someone at one point used too large of a bulb. There are no dents to the top metal hood, stem pivot holds it securely in all positions. Original three way switch operates perfectly, turns one bulb on, then the other, then both providing mood lighting options. Overall, a nice original/unrestored example with minor scratches here& there to the paint and patina to the ... morebrass anodizing. Scarce Gerald Thurston plug-in sconce/wall lamp. With chocolate brown cone, and large taupe oval up-light. Definitely one of his'blue-chip' designs. Circa 1955. the side by side double cone versions. Are more common albeit rare too) Condition: Overall. Very good condition, with age appropriate wear. Small nick near the switch on the cone. And some aged patina on the metal bar. Some paint loss on the INNER up-light near bulb. Overall. Looks fantastic. Push button switch turns on up-light, and knob at the end of the cone turns the cone on. Extends from wall about 17 inches. It was the favorite of young moderns who used it to illuminate bedrooms, living rooms. Halls and dens. Model home builders made a point to hang a goose neck lamp upon a wall when decorating their models because the gooseneck lamp was to early mid century model homes what granite counters were to model homes in the post-millennium. Gerald Thurston. Lightolier's in-house designer had designed many gooseneck lamps and was always finding ways to introduce new style and practicality into the designs he crafted for Lightolier. This lamp has two smaller conical shades. These use the smaller ... moreappliance sized standard base bulbs. Allowing for a smaller more stylish shade. For the most part up until the early fifties. The gooseneck lamps had larger shades. Thurston was one of the pioneers who tried to bring the shade size down and make it more compact. This lamp is very rakish and sleek- the utmost of sophistication for 1954! This lamp has the unusual double push-button design. This allowed for instant gratification for the user and turned on or off the desired light instantly without having to cycle through a three way switch. This was particularly popular when the lamp was placed in a guest room with two beds and this would not interrupt someone's sleep by switching on their lamp in the cycling process. This lamp is in nice condition. There are a few scrapes and minor dings. But the lamp is extremely presentable and hardly shows its age at all. Not many of these are left any more. And there are small perforated 2.5" perforated metal slats in various pastel colors which are affixed to the framework in both horizontal and vertical directions. The pendant measures approx. 9" tall x 9.5" in diameter. Condition: Very good, all-original vintage condition. The white framework could use a gentle cleaning, and it has some paint missing here and there which is commensurate with age and use. By the fifties they kept refining their botanical inspired designs and became strong proponents of European modernism. Their offerings now included the finest Danish walnut. Up for sale is this stunning chrome and lucite floor or table lamp. I don't know the manufacturer or country of origin. But it has the look of Robert Sonneman or Lightolier. The base is 9.5" square and weighted for stability. There are three rows of three vertical tubes with spacing maintained by a zig zag piece of dark smoked lucite. the shortest row is 31" tall, the middle row is 38" tall, and the top row is 45" tall. All tubes are 1" diameter. Overall height is about 47" plus 2" for bulbs. There are two switches, one on/off in line on the cord, and one on the right front tube that controls which bulbs light up. VERY RARE Gerald Thurston Lightolier Mid Century Eames vtg 50s 60s lamp
Astounding. And ASTONISHINGLY RARE Lightolier lamp, circa 1959-62 This is a Black one. And I also have a White one listed. I was fairly sure I had seen every important mid century Lightolier lamp in one form or another. Until I acquired this. Though Sarfatti, and Gaetano Sciolari designed for Lightolier this is no doubt a Gerald Thurston treasure. The elements that make up this modernist lamp include: lacquered metal-brass-walnut-plastic-glass(this piece is often missing) The plastic shade has a shiny brass sleeve that fits over the glass flute. A rather astonishingly complex list of well crated components for one lamp design. Condition: Small paint nick near the switch. Small hairline'stress lines' near top which are barely visible or a cause for structural concern. Original black enamel in very good condition. The creamy white plastic ... moreshade is in very good shape with no outside issues. Walnut is excellent. About 26 inches tall and 15 inches wide. This is a stunning modernist masterpiece. That clearly had a limited production run. It's a miracle it has survived. As a mid century lamp lover. Collector and seller, my philosophy is simple and two pronged; 1) RARITY AND BEAUTY One can easily buy a great $1000 contemporary lamp from Holly Hunt or Circa lighting. Or Flos(to name a few) but the lamps I sell will never be produced again and I appreciate their rarity. 2) HONESTY I never sell"Frankenstein" lamps(odd pieces slapped together. Slathered in new paint(oddly enough usually fire engine red) and passed off as having an exotic(usually Italian, or Gino Sarfatti) origin. Buyer beware. I say! Mid century UFO VTG 50's Eames era Lightolier space age atomic lamp tripod
Handsome brass lamp. With claw feet and perforated metal diffuser. About 18 inches tall This lamp is unmarked. Though it's looping perforated shade pattern was a hallmark with Lightolier. In fact it looks like a slightly smaller cousin to the famous Thurston/Stiffel(shown as a size reference. Fantastic perforated metal diffuser. And perforated brass-finish shade. Twin sockets take regular sized Edison bulbs. The lamp switch is on the top of the lamp. To change bulbs. You unscrew the round plate at the top and lift off the shade. Very good vintage condition. Shade has no dents. And a minimal amount of superficial scuffs. Brass stem and claw feet have appropriate age related wear. A very sweet lamp. As a mid century lamp lover.
