Rare Drexel Declaration Walnut Hutch/Open Cupboard ~ Kipp Stewart
Very Rare Drexel Declaration Hutch/Buffet Designed by Kipp Stewart and Stewart MacDougall in the 1950's. Made of oiled walnut with rosewood accents. Has original white porcelain pulls. The buffet is listed in the original catalog as item# 851-110 and has the original automatic interior light. It measures 48 1/2" wide, 20" deep and 31" high. The hutch top however is elusive and is not listed in any catalog that I have found and I have never seen this piece advertised for sale. It is clearly marked as Declaration and has an item# of 851-210. It has the lovely rosewood accents on each side near the top and has the original textured white glass shelf inserts. It is fastened to the buffet by screws and a metal tab. Has a very Danish Modern look to it with the flared peaks at each side. It measures 11" deep at the bottom ... moreand tapers to about 6 1/2" at the top. It is 48 1/2" wide and stands 35 1/2" to the top of the flare. The bottom shelf is about 8 1/2" deep, the top one is about 6 1/2" deep. Neither shelf has a plate rail. I would rate the condition of this piece as excellent. The hardware on the bottom right door does not appear to latch properly but it opens and closes just fine. Up to you whether to replace or not. What's interesting about this piece is that, even though it is massive, the footprint is not that big. The piece is not very deep(20" so in most rooms, it would look like a built in unit! Designed by Kipp Stewart and Stewart MacDougall for Drexel Declaration. Made in USA circa late 1950's. The set includes 2 armchairs and 4 side chairs. Beautiful and timeless design, combining influences of Shaker, Windsor, Nakashima, Danish Modern and Traditional. Approximate height of the armchairs is 39" height, and the side chairs are height 36" Condition is good. These chairs were very dirty and had seen much use. The chairs have now been cleaned, restored and re-strengthened/reglued and repaired at the joints and rungs of the underside. As you can see, one of the side chair seats has some separation but since the original construction ... moreof these chairs includes double reinforcement brackets on underside, it is stable. There is an old crack at the top of one curved arm as shown in photo, nothing serious. Stylized cattail or flat arrow back spindles with flat face and attractive angle on back of spindles. Simple turned splayed legs. Some of the chairs have the Drexel logo stamped on underside as shown. Wonderful to find a complete set.you can use them at your table, or feature individual chairs throughout your home. They are strikingly handsome, especially the armchairs. ABSOLUTELY NO RETURNS. As shown. An original mid century Drexel Declaration high boy 6 drawer dresser by Kipp Stewart. Very light signs of use and in overall great vintage condition. Weighs approximately 90 pounds and measures 45 1/2" tall, 34" wide, and 20" deep. All hardware is original and in good condition with a little tarnish on the brass here and there. Mass. has there original brass tag) This set is made of a highly figured Walnut and has so many awesome features such as the door activated light on bottom double doors and upper lights that illuminate glass door area. There are 2 doors on bottom which open to large display area and on left there are 3 drawers with original brass and walnut knobs. I found an add that had this whole set and it comes with original brass and walnut knobs and that is what this one has, usually they are replaced) There is an open display area in center so it makes a great lot of display area. The upper section has 2 glass doors with original brass knobs that open to an adjustable single shelf on either side the shelves are milk ... moreglass white. The set is overall very good vintage condition with minor normal use very stable and definitely a beautiful centerpiece in your Mid Century Modern home. If you have any questions please ask. This is a beautiful chest of drawers designed by Kipp Stewart and Stewart MacDougal for the Drexel Declaration collection. It has 3 larger drawers on the bottom. Behind the two cabinet doors are a large storage area and three slide out shirt trays.There is a slide out tray(pic#11) on the right. With a very handy flip-up mirror. Perfect for checking your collar or tie while getting ready. Under the mirror is an area to store ties, cuff links etc. This piece was made in March of 1965 as seen in pic#12. It has absolutely stunning book-matched wood grain on the front, sides and top. It is in amazing condition for its age. It has a couple areas of very minor wear. Picture#7 shows the bottom drawer and pics#8-9 show light rings on the top. These are very minor, but I like to be as descriptive as possible.
