Once worn on the forehead during special celebrations and events and seen on all the pictures here. Chiefs and warriors wear this traditional handmade headband during a festival(which is often worn to support other decorations such as feathers, hair netting etc. Tiny Beads or Shells are handsewn on. The band was once tinted with red ochre and mud. Item was collected a couple of decades ago. It is an authentic piece obtained from a tribe in the area. You can see some warriors wearing them on the additional photos. The tribes or Irian Jaya. Indonesia and Papua New Guinea have lived in isolation for centuries due to the remoteness of their land and its difficult access. Their dress code has remained primitive for centuries. Traditionally, the men wear no other clothing apart from a penis sheath made of a cultivated gourd and known locally as a“horim” and some simple ornamentation such as string hair nets, bird of paradise feathers and necklaces with boar tusks or cowrie shells or other. On ceremonial days, it is another matter, they then use material from the surrounding jungles to create incredibly colorful and clever body adornments and costumes, as seen on the photos here as well. This auction is for lot of 3 old/vintage fighting arrows from the Eastern Highlands area of Papua New Guinea. The local name for these barbed arrows is tatai. Shafts made from bamboo or cane with incised lines and other decorative elements. One of the points is made from blackpalm wood. The other two are made from hardwood. Barbs, grooves etc. to cause trauma. The thin hardwood tip is deeply grooved about 6" from tip so it would break off in the target. Bindings are cane, yellow orchid fiber, and plastic material from a feed sack or similar(last is unusual) Measure 47"38" long with 14"13" points. This auction is for a vintage hunting/fighting arrow from the Eastern Highlands region of Papua New Guinea. Cane shaft. Large almost triangular blade made from very thick bamboo. Blade is attached to shaft with fine bamboo or grass fiber. Woven in several different patterns. Incorporates dry leaf or corn husk like material under bindings. Bamboo blades like these were used for fighting, hunting and killing pigs. In very good condition, authentic tribally made item but does not show much wear. Measures 47" long with 13" x 3/4" blade. This piece measures approximately 11.75" tall by 2.5" wide by 1.5" deep and is in overall excellent condition apart from the missing cowry shell and some minor scuffing.
