I have this very primitive Antique Wood Carved Statue from the Yamok Tribe in Papua New Guinea up for sale in very great condition for it's age. It ... moremeasures 38" tall x 33" wide x 5.5" thick. I don't not know the exact age of this wood statue. But I'm told it's over 100 years old. This is a very cool antique wood carving and looks so much better in person, because it's so unique. This carving of a bird on the back of a young boy comes from the Yamok Village in East Sepik Province of Papua New Guinea. The bird plays a large part of their creation story. In the begging. The Yamoks say everything was fluid. The story told of this carving is a boy swimming across a river and an injured bird landed on his back and boy saved this bird and brought it to shore symbolizing the start of their civilization. This is the second wonderful Papua New Guinea artifact that I am posting this week. Have a look also at my'Standing Male Figure' Here we have ... morea carved wooden Hornbill with pigment and inset bone details in the eye sockets. There are some condition issues but that is to be expected in an authentic artifact that carries considerable age. There is a crack that runs vertically along the left side of the body and the tip of the bill has been repaired/re-attached by a previous owner. I've owned this piece since he early'70's(bought in Cairns Australia) and aside from displaying it prominently in my home have done nothing to it. Measures 26" 66 cm in height. Pigments. Derived from various amalgams of charcoal, lime, ground earth, plants, burnt shells and minerals mixed with tree sap, water and clay have been applied overall. The use of colour is an important aspect of Middle and Upper Sepik River art(The Sepik River Basin being a region of PNG noted for its production of artifacts) It's believed that colouring a carving will increase the power associated with it and carvings are often decorated and re-decorated before important ceremonies. Am including with this bird a loosely woven string bag. Known throughout PNG as a'bilum' bought at the same time. Mid 20th century or earlier. Similar examples seen recently in the collection of Oceanic artifacts in the Museum of Anthropology at the University of British Columbia, in Vancouver B.C. Bilums are made throughout PNG. Traditionally. As in this example they were made with plant fibres, usinga process known as'looping' or'knotless netting. Many villagers are now finding it easier to use store bought wool and cotton and so the natural examples are relatively rare. Small. Light, strong and woven of indigenous plant fibres this example would have been tucked into a waistband and brought into the jungle to carry any fruit, birds eggs, small animals etc. collected there. Has a handle of wrapped fibres. Measures roughly 9" x 9&

Authentic Tribal Papua New Guinea Sepik Region Orator's Stool
AUTHENTIC PAPUA NEW GUINEA SEPIK REGION ORATOR'S STOOL Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 I’m pleased to offer for auction this week an original Orator’s stool from the Sepik River Region of Papua. New Guinea. Authentic figures(20 th century) such as this one are extremely difficult to find and collect. This majestic figure stands approximately 6’ high with flexed limbs. A laplap made of handmade bilum string, and anklets and bracelets. It has a large mask-like head with the tongue protruding, shell eyes, face bordered with cowrie shells embedded in clay, boars tusks in the nostrils, human hair at the forehead, and cassowary feathers at the crown. It is painted with pinkish, white, and earth tone pigments. The condition is appropriate for its age, with some color erosion and human hair and shells ... moremissing. Following is a more comprehensive description of the use and function of this fine artifact: Formal debate is an important and popular practice for many of the Sepik River peoples. The principal accessory of expression during their often violent discussions is a carved representation of an ancestor kneeling or standing beside his personal stool. The disproportionately exaggerated hips. Shoulders, and heavy, incised pectorals are characteristic of carvings from this region. The figure carved within the stool or chair probably represents a totemic ancestor. These often larger than life size orator's pieces are the central figures in the Haus Tambaran. No human being sits on these stools, only the invisible protective spirit is there who presides over ritual ceremonies or the settlement of disputes. Typically, an orator stands beside the stool and calls on the clan spirit to support his speech. To emphasis a point, the speaker may strike the"seat" of the stool with a bundle of croton leaves or grass. As long as a man holds the bundle of leaves or grass, he commands the floor. The speaker may gradually reduce the number of leaves in the bundle to show that he

AKA Sorcerer's staff. Orator's staff, Chief's staff, or Status staff. Walking stick. I find this piece particularly spectacular with the addition of the Spirit Animals on it. I believe them to be a Crocodile and a Goanna Lizard. Not sure the age of this piece. PLEASE LOOK CAREFULLY AT THE PICTURES. It is 37 inches tall. Ebony(or similar hardwood) with a shiny black patina- I have not cleaned it, so there is an accumulation of dust and age in the crevasses- it's been hanging on my wall for about 5-6 years. Carving marks are evident. There is an old break on one of the opposing men at the top. The men have ... moreslightly protruding tongues. It appears to be a very old break, and possibly repaired with a tree resin or sap-based glue, as it is orange-ish in color. Maybe an animal based glue? The repaired break and the smooth, shiny patina suggest use to me. The handle is 5 inches long. The opposing sitting figures are 4 inches tall. Including the pedestal and the head covering. The lizard is 6.25 long, the crocodile is 8 inches long. They are 2 inches across inclusive. The shaft of the staff tapers to a point. I do not know the provenance of this piece. I purchased at an Estate Sale of a collector/antique dealer in San Bruno. California several years ago. They collected MANY different things. Not Ethnographic or even Oceanic centered. This was just in a random collection of walking sticks& canes. I do combine shipping when possible. All items WILL be packed securely to protect from damage and maintain its beautiful condition. Paper items and ephemera will be in a padded envelope so that tracking can be added. Be sure to add me to you! Check out my! PLEASE ask any. And all questions PRIOR to bidding! PLEASE CONTACT ME if you have an issue with your purchase! I try to describe my item
