This is a Fijian war club and stand, believed to be made of Ironwood. I purchased it in Fiji in the 1990's but am not sure when it was orginally made. ... moreHistorically the club originates from the Pacific Islands & Oceania and falls under the categories of ethnographic artwork and antiques. The war club and stand were traditionally used by Fijian warriors and are made from a durable wood known as Ironwood. Unique as this is not the typical club head or "beaks" club design. I was told the intent of the design was to be a rib cracker... I just think it is a nice decoration piece but am moving overseas so don't even want to think what international customs would think of this...

Carved Wood Souvenir Reproduction Fijian Culacula Throwing Club. This wood piece appears to be carved and has smooth and serrated edges. The wood has ... moresome age to it, so check out the photos and let me know if you would like more as you're considering this purchase. It weighs about 4 oz. Extremely rare chiefs (Iculanibokola) cannibal fork in a very unusual war club style, possibly ceremonial. This object has been on display in a gallery ... morein Australia, which I bought from. The condition is great with some noticeable signs of use and about 10 per cent disintegration on the grass weave. Most antique cannibal forks have total loss of grass weave. The fork is well carved with four prongs and wonderful age patination. Probably circa turn of the century. The fork measures 16 1/4" by 4" (pictures are a true and accurate depiction and part of the description.)stand not included. Thank you for watching.

ANTIQUE 19TH C FIJI FIJIAN GATA WAR CLUB
Up for Auction is an antique Fijian“Gata” War Club dating to around 1850-1900. This isn’t a ceremonial or dance club– it is the real thing and very heavy. It is about 100cm long and weighs about 4kg. It has a nice patina that you would expect for its age. A real talking piece. Probably the most interesting thing about this club was it was part of the collection of Sir Henry Wellcome. See below) The number and variety of Fijian war club is testament to the fact that Fiji was beset by a long history of warfare and rampant ceremonial cannibalism. This article aims to help the reader understand and distinguish the different types and their intended specialized functions. Fijian clubs were the most cherished personal possessions of the Fijian warrior. It was designed and made for specific purposes and there are approximately thirty distinct and ... morediverse types of Fijian War club. Fijian clubs that had been successfully use to kill were either inlayed with human teeth or by the cutting of notches on the grip. A club use to kill many enemies was believed to have a life power of its own or mana. A Fijian War club with large amounts of mana were sometimes placed in a temple to the gods of war. And became ritual objects in funerary rites and certain craft ceremonies. Types of Fijian clubs could can be further divided by surface ornamentation and design. Type of wood, and by the type and nature of coir sennet wrapping. If you are interested in these details I highly recommend the book Fijian Weapons and Warfare by Fergus Clunie to which a lot of the information from this article is extracted. Gata Fijian War Club- This is one of the most widely used war club in Fiji. The angled cutting edge was designed to cut through and snap bones. The spur on the very top perhaps represents the open mouth of the striking snake. Sir Henry Solomon Wellcome(August 21. 1853– July 25, 1936) was an American-British pharmaceutical entrepreneur. He founded the pharmaceutical company Burroughs Wellcome& Company with his colleague Silas Bur

Antique Tribal Fijian Bowei Club - 19th Century
A fascinating. Arresting and highly decorative antique Fijian hardwood war club. Carved from a beautiful piece of age soaked Vesi wood. This artefact has an attractive dark glossy patina. With a long handle broadening into the head, the top half is encircled in a decorative chevron motif known as tavatava; said to represent traditional Fijian tattoos. The contrast between the destructive power of this weapon and its sleek. Natural beauty is highly striking. Beneath the tavatava pattern is a series of incised letters bearing the name: EPAKUKI" Almost certainly the name of the owner of this potent weapon. Though other examples are known, inscriptions such as this remain rare, providing a sense of depth and connection to the artefact that is not often found. Of all the Polynesian people. The Fijians were the most prolific club makers and ... moreare widely recognized as masters of their art. Producing a number of different forms, a warrior would chose a club that suited his stature and natural movements, using different weapons for different purposes.Bowei such as this were thought to be embued with their own special powers, and would have been carried into battle to be used as a close quarters weapon, wielded in such a way that the the club would smash through bone. A brutal yet facinating artefact. It is rare to find pieces of this type with inscriptions on the private market. Length: 28 3/4 inches. Condition: Very good. With signs of use commensurate with an antique war club. Fracture to one side of blade and two cracks to base, as shown. Otherwise in good condition and custom mounted. OLD ANTIQUE TRIBAL OCEANIC FIJIAN SOLOMAN ISLANDS WAR AXE NO CLUB SWORD
Being offered is a nice old antique Oceanic tribal war axe. Most probably from the Solomon Islands or the Fijian Islands. The axe measures 26" in total length. The axe head measures 6" in length and 4" in width. The handle is a dark hardwood, with a great glossy patina, and the lower part with a slight knob portion at the bottom of the handle. The handle is slimmed down slightly at the lower portion of the handle and the upper portion is thicker. There are a few dings on the knob at the end of the handle but otherwise in pretty good shape overall. The axe head, which is probably an European import, has a dark patina with some rusting and pitting throughout the axe head. The cutting edge with a slight chip towards the top. The wood has been notched at the top and the axe head fitted perfectly. There is no cap or bolt at the ... moretop. Just perfectly fitted. This axe shows very good age, most probably 19th century, possibly earlier. A wonderful piece that is not often encountered. Please e-mail with any questions. Please view my other auctions for a great variety of clubs, axes and swords. sword. Dagger, knife, club, mace, axe, tribal, ethnographic, ethnic, oceanic, Fijian, Solomon islands,

The Fijians were experts at all types of club warfare. And are well known for the short ulla or round headed throwing club. Each Fijian warrior would go into the fight with three or four tucked into his belt. Some clubs had a very bloody career before being hung. Much notched, in the Temple of the God of War, those of great warriors being of as notorious repute, and as widely feared, as the masters who wielded them. This club has two notches carved through the grain on the ... morehandle end, whether this is relevant to the above I do not know. 19th century Fijian Ula Tavatava War Club
This is a mid 19th century Fijian Ula Tavatava. It is in good condition. My great(x4) uncle was a sailor and brought it to the US straight from Fiji. The handle designs are quite worn. Indicating that this club was used a lot. Under the head are many dots which are a tally system, probably representing some sort of ceremonial or social events. This Ula will make a great addition to your collection.

Fijian Kiakavo dina wood dance club, 19th century, nice old dark brown finish
On the basis of the form and smaller size. Clunie(1977) regards these'spurred' clubs as dance and ceremonial clubs. This example is 30 inches in length and well formed by hand work. An dark old finish shows cracking from contraction and is worn away in areas showing moderately dark wood. The shape is typical for the form, with the main body gently arching forward. The far end has a raised ridge in the midline that shows only very slight chipping. The forward surface has roughly incised decoration. A raised comb is present at the fork from which the spur arises. A few pinprick holes are present along the shaft and there is a band of roughness of the old finish. There is faint evidence that a good part of the shaft was once wrapped. The terminal expands in the usual manner suggestive to many of a certain anatomical part. The aging of ... morethe finish and workmanship suggest a 19th century attribution. FOR ALL BIDDERS: Before bidding. Please be sure that you may legally purchase and receive the item. Fijian rootstock (waka) club
A large and robust Fijian rootstock(Waka) club. Distinguished by two intact bands of coir sinnet. One just under the head, the second, just above the classic tavatava carved handle. This club possesses a warm medium patina, excellent wear which smooths the edges of the buttress root and towards the handle transitions into a kukui oil/ blood patina demonstrating its mana and confirming this is a club of an important warrior or chief. At 114.5cm(45” tall it is larger than typical. With a custom European base, ex Jean Edouard Carlier, Paris. Classic period Polynesian clubs such as this are now difficult to find. Good luck. FIJIAN WIFE BEATING CLUB BOWAI
FIJIAN WIFE BEATING CLUB BOWAI Fine example. 21 length, early 19th century and dating to the period of rampant cannibalism. Wood, circular section and tapering with both ends slightly flared. Domed top and low conical butt with integral lug pierce for a wrist thong. Nicely incised in four broad bands of lime inlaid geometric decoration, principally hounds tooth. The surface with scraped finish and wonderful patina with about 50% lime inlay intact. These were used specifically for wife beating, a fundamental element of Fijian culture. At the time, human flesh was a staple of the Fijian diet, absent any spiritual context and simply the food of choice. Clunnie describes a hunting party returning by boat with the corpses of women and children hanging from the rigging, having raided a family washing cloths. This is from our own collection and ... moreone of the only two examples encountered in nearly 50 years.

I was unable to find clubs from either area which used a wrap like this one. the hide appears to all one piece with no evidence or sewing or joining suggesting that it must be from a tail or leg. It does not look like cowhide. I would guess it to be pig or boar from the small amount of hair left on it. Beautifully formed with graceful onion shaped head. Excellent patina/polish from wear. 23" Long Some older cracks to shaft and head. Animal skin wrap on shaft possible native repair? Seems an unlikely place to grip it.
