Vintage Tonga Tapa Cloth - 13ft X 8ft - Oceanic Art - Polynesian
This is a large traditional Kupesi patterened Ngatu tapa bark cloth made from the bark of a mulberry tree. The large cloth displays the Tongan Royal Family coat of arms. The Norfolk Island Palm trees which line the road to the royal palace, and the dove of peace. As pictured this type of Tapa is recorded in Neich and Pendergrast's book Traditional Tapa Textiles of the Pacific where they state"Tongan Tapa with these motifs then became very popular during World War Two, expressing solidarity with Britain. It is obvious to assume that this example is from that era. This is a a very fine, historic and very large Tongan Tapa which measures(13ft x 8ft 8 inch)

Large Tribal Oceanic Polynesian Melanesian Tapa Cloth Rare Motifs Design c1970 Large Tribal Oceanic Polynesian Melanesian Tapa Cloth Rare Motifs Design c1970 Please look to Tribal Art Catalogues. Miller's& Carter's price guides for similar Great size and motifs of obscure origin The cloth is known by a number of local names although the term tapa is international and understood throughout the islands that use the cloth. The word tapa is from Tahiti and the Cook Islands. Where Captain Cook was the first European to collect it and introduce it to the rest of the world. In Tonga, tapa is known as ngatu, and here it is of great social importance to the islanders, often being given as gifts. In Samoa, the same cloth is called siapo, and In Niue it is hiapo. In Hawai ʻ i. It is known as kapa. In Rotuma, a Polynesian island in the Fiji ... moregroup, it is called‘uha and in other Fiji islands it is called masi. In the Pitcairn islands it was called ahu. Also known as Tapia abc All these different words give some clue to the origin. Masi could mean the(bark of the) Dye-fig(Ficus tinctoria) Endemic to Oceania, and probably the one originally used to make tapa. Somewhere in history, during the voyages of migration the hiapo or siapo was introduced from Southeast Asia, the Paper mulberry tree(Broussonetia papyrifera) The bark of this tree is much better to use, and put the use of the Dye-fig into oblivion. Only its name remained in Fiji. Tapa finally, has the meaning of border or strip. It seems likely that before the glueing process became common to make large sheets(see below) only narrow strips were produced. Tapa can be painted. Decorated by rubbing, stamping, stencilling, smoking(Fiji- masi Kuvui" or dyeing. The patterns of Tongan, Samoan, and Fijian tapa usually form a grid of squares, each of which contains geometrical patterns with repeated motifs such as fish and plants, for example four stylised leaves forming a diagonal cross. Traditional dyes are usually black and rust-brown, although other colours are

NICE OLD ANTIQUE HAWAIIAN POLYNESIAN OCEANIC ANCESTOR STATUES DOLLS NO SWORD
Being offered is a group of 3 carved wooden statues or ancestor figures or type of doll. They vary in size from 7 1/2" to 8" and also vary in width with one real wide and stout one and the other two a bit more narrow. They all come with painted hair showing the part with painted eyes. They all have remnants of black paint or dye particularly around the face maybe to represent a tattoo. They each come with a beaded necklace but unknown if that is original to them or not. The feet are painted black in each case. Age is unknown so I am guessing late 19th century up to mid 20th century. They have a great tribal folk art look to them. Please e-mail with any questions.
