New Guinea Crocodile Sepik River Wooden Carved Board This authentic carved crocodile was hand crafted in New Guinea's Sepik region. Crocodiles feature prominently in the legends and rites of passage of various Sepik tribes. Stories may vary from village to village. But there is a shared belief in ancestral ties to the crocodiles and a practice of ritual scarring of initiated men that emulates crocodile skin. The carving came to the Silicon Valley Historical Association through the estate of the Berta Wright Gallery Shop in Tucson. Arizona, that closed in the late 1990s. The Berta Wright shops had fine art from around the world ~ and a lot of her things ended up in the Tucson Museum of Art. This crocodile carving is in very good condition ~ with no chips or cracks. Item's Title and Description: Two beautiful Papau New Guinea MIDDLE SEPIK RIVER masks Papau New Guinea Tribal MASK. Mandagu Manabara, Tambenum Village, Middle Sepik River Basin Mask, Mandagu Manabara, Tambenum Village, Middle Sepik River Basin. These are tribal mask of elongated oval form. The polychromed face with stylized concentric decoration around the masks, applied two big cowrie eyes. The smaller mask has the elongated feathers at the top. It also has a piece missing from the top left edge please see pics. They both have an inset cowrie shells along the edges. And on chin or beard. Both have a bird which extends out from under the nose to bottom of chins. The larger mask has a painted mouth under the bird while smaller does not. The larger has carved nostrils and the smaller has painted nostrils. Both have the whole with cowrie ... moreborder and raffia beard. The larger one has a darker beard. The large one has ears. This piece has a very developed patina. With overall wear and encrustations, as shown. This is aN original tribal piece! The hook shows wear consistent. Dates to the 1930's and presents an ashy brown patina measuring 31 inches tall and is 6 inches wide. Suspension hooks were in use to dry and preserve meats and fish. The hook is carved in a male elongated body featuring a bird headdress ad includes some red and white pigments from the original paint. Yams are the most important food, so many different names are used to describe the varieties and stages of growing thems, just as the ocean-going Polynesians have many terms to describe the sea. At the harvest yam linings, the decorated long yams(dioscorea alata) represent the nggwal spirits who are affiliated with the ancestors of the Abelam. The Abelam are divided into the hill country, or northern Abelam, and the southern plains Abelam, or Wosera. The Abelam area was part of German New Guinea(Kaiser Wilhelmsland) from 1884 to 1914-1920 when Australia was given New Guinea as well as Papua under a United Nations' protectorate. Papua New Guinea gained independence in 1975. The early German administrators recognized and appointed village leaders. They gave them special hats and insignia which are still portrayed in some Abelam carvings; however, there was no significant contact with the outside world until the 1930s when gold was discovered.
