Rare Antique Maori Hand-Carved & Signed Patu War Club from New Zealand
My parents traveled to New Zealand in the early 1980s. While there. My dad stopped into an antique shop, and purchased this club. He was a collector of weapons, including various knives, cannons, and guns. I recall him describing to me after they returned from their trip how the indigenous people used to use it as a weapon. Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE The store owner in New Zealand told my dad that this club is a Wahaika. It is one of the several different war clubs used by Maori warriors. The Wahaika was used exclusively by the most fierce and respected warriors with the highest rankings. It was given as a ceremonial piece. Often the figure carved forward of the handle was that of an ancestor. The essence of each person it was passed to is imbued within it. The Maori considered the spiritual energy or mana as sacred powers ... morethat gained authority over time. As shown in the last uploaded image. This club is unique in that it is signed by the carver. It is difficult to read, but as best as we can make out, it has a name, HRahchan’ followed by what could be‘Maori’ There are two other words at the bottom which may indicate other names since this kind of club was passed down or position of rank. Again, we are not sure because the handwritten letters are difficult to read. It is carved from wood believed to be Tawa. A native New Zealand hardwood. The wood is usually a creamy brown color. But in large trees it can be dark brown to black. The eyes of the ancestral figure and on the handle have Paua shell inlay. The exact age is not known. However. Similar clubs date in the 1800s. It is in very good condition with a few tiny rubbed areas. It measures 15” L x 5” W at its widest point. It has a cord for hanging, and has hung in what used to be my father’s office since he brought it back in 1984. Selling as is. Antique vintage ostrich feather fans Maori Aboriginal leather work handmade
A pair of large round ostrich feather fans with leather work tribal art. I think these come from New Zealand or Australia- may be from another pacific island. I purchased these about 5 years ago from the house of a retired British Diplomat who was based in New Zealand in 1940s/50s. He thought these were probably made as tourist souvenirs in 1920s. There are two fans- they are very similar but not identical. The handles are rolled pieces of leather around a wooden frame. The centre of the fans are leather with cut pieces of different coloured leather edged with leather threads sewn to form leaf shapes. Around this is band of white leather. And around this a circle of coloured wool, and finally the outer circles of black, brown and white ostrich feathers. On the back there is a central circle of coloured leather panels with sections cut out ... moreand fine leather strips forming a star shape. Each fan measures approx 32 inches from top to base of handle. The diameter is approx 26 inches from side to side. Condition- in very good condition- there are one or two cracked feather stems and some very minor spots on the leather handles- but nothing serious. The main feathers are in good condition and not shedding or damaged. Super tribal art fans- great for collectors or for display- have been hung on a wall and look amazing. Excellent& highly interesting hand carved wood letter opener, beautifully& skilfully carved from a single piece of wood with a superb carved warrior head with incised facial decoration& original head dress& bead eyes. Please see pics. The carved head is outstanding. With an excellent expression& the entire item is carved with the utmost skill, with the"shoulder" carved in the form of a deer antler, with a smooth. Tapered blaide to the opener. It has some incised. Hand carved letters or symbols to each side, I do not recognise this at all& it is difficult for me to decipher, it looks like some ancient Maori Punic& Numidian scripts. Antique 19thC Maori Paddle "Hoe Whakatere" Nicely carved wood. Oceanic Polynesia
Antique 19th Century Maori New Zealand canoe paddle. Superb carving and etching on this native wood paddle. Condition is not bad considering it's age. The tip is chipped and has a small split. The handle is missing a small chunk of wood. But it did not stop the owner from using it and it shows wear. The carving of symbols is just as beautiful and have to see closely to really appreciate it. Some small chips and dings on the edges. It is 44 3/4" inches long and 5 1/2" inches at the widest section of the paddle. Paddling was the most common method of propelling canoes. The paddle was known as the hoe. Or hīrau. Longer paddles were known as hoe whakatere, hoe whakahaere or urungi. They were usually made of kahikatea wood, although mataī could also be suitably light and strong. Tuta Nihoniho, of the Ngāti Porou tribe, noted that ... morepaddles could also be made of mānuka, maire, the heart of pukatea, and tawa.

An unusual antique Maori folk art carved wood figure of a woman wearing a feather cloak and carrying a child on her back. She is wearing a hei tiki pendant around her neck. The figure is in good condition with inlaid shell details and a good. Old patina. There is a hole on the hair which would have held a feather and there is a loss in the mouth area, perhaps she smoked a pipe. The figure measures 6 inches(15.5 cm. high.
