Large Painted Aboriginal Didgeridoo - Arnhem Land 1970's
This large and heavy didgeridoo has been traditionally hollowed out by termites and the outside painted with a serpent and bands of hatched paintwork. Aboriginal Hollow Log Coffin - Western Arnhem Land 1970's
Collected in Western Arnhem Land in the mid-late 1970's I assume this is a hollow log coffin due to the size and width of the piece. It measures 124cm x 9cm in width which seems to me to be too wide for a didge. It has been painted with ochres and possibly a fixative and depicts a saltwater crocodile in a field of dots. This group of four carvings were collected at Yirrkala in North-East Arnhem Land in the 1970's. They consist of a barracuda. Turtle, bird and smoking pipe and are carved from softwood with the exception of the fish which feels quite a bit heavier. They are in good condition and measure 14cm in length turtle, 55cm barracuda, 32cm bird and 48cm pipe. The barracuda does have some darker pigmentation to one side seen in the side pic and I would imagine this could be cleaned. Aboriginal Bark Painting Mangawila Arnhem Land Djawa Australia Night Heron Totem
Hi. You are bidding on an original Aboriginal bark painting by Mangawila. Son of Djala, of the Gupapuynga Tribe in the Milingimbi region of Arnhem Land. Djala was one of the most important tribal leaders in Arnhem Land. He passed down sacred myths to paint to his son. Mangawila also inherited his mother's totems and myths, and this painting shows the night heron surrounded by bush tucker, one of her myths. When I got this bark painting, which measures about 18 inches by 10 inches and is on eucalyptus bark, there was a brochure folded around the hanging wire. The brochure appears to be from the 1960's. It describes in detail the history of Australian Aboriginal bark painting. I do not know the age of this piece, but I am imagining that it was contemporaneous with the brochure. The introduction describes the early tradition and the ... morefact that Arnhem Land in Northern Australia is the area where the ancient tradition of bark painting continues to flourish. The technique is very detailed but after the bark is prepared certain natural clays and rocks are used to achieve the ochres and manganese. The subject matter can be based on stories passed down from father to son. In this case, the father was Djala, a tribal leader. I am just describing in brief what is described in detail in the brochure. The painting is in good condition. I think you will be pleased with condition and quality and original source. I can send the brochure with the bark painting. Thank you.
