This is quite heavy- possibly proving too costly to ship to Europe/Asia/Australia- but nicely carved with animalistic motifs. Just shy of 56"H. THIS may not be as textbook as the one just sold by Michael Hamson for $8000(check out his site) but this is certainly more-than entry-level. Guaranteed to be original and as described- Original old circa 1940's-1950's Papua New Guinea polychrome painted war and or ceremonial dance shield. The wood shield was entirely hand carved and overall the paint pigment and wood have a nice mellow patina from age. The eyes are cowrie shell's and the shield is quite mesmerizing in person. This is a nice large old Papua New Guinea example. A fine piece indeed. SIZE: 35 1/4 inches high by 11 1/4 inches at the wide st part by 4 inches deep from back to the end of the nose.CONDITION: Very good condition, ther e is a old nail repair to a crack on the lower right side on the back and on the top right back. Does not detract from the piece overall. It has a raised triangular-shaped face at the top between two sets of stylized eye motifs. The design is classic and bold in pale Yellow, Brown, Red and Black pigments. The shield's condition is near perfect for its age, has been in a smoke free environment and measures 22 inches wide by 58 inches high, 1 inch deep. This shield was used during war-times or headhunting expeditions to protect the occupants from incoming arrows. This is a very rare and authentic example. Stunning example of vintage Papua New Guinea Tribal Art. A unique. Exceptional piece. Sepik River. Ancestor. This is a very large mask/ shield. 30" x 11 1/5" It has a beautifully carved. Deeply 3 dimensional face. Protruding round forehead with feather hair, big nose, a large number of cowry/ cowrie shells, encircled with raffia, handle in front. Back is hand curved out. There is a hanger attached. This would be a wonderful decorative piece. Or amazing addition to an Oceanic, Tribal or African art collection. Wow. What a great old estate find! Here is a primitive TRIBAL ART ASMAT. Papua New Guinea Oceanic'WAR' SHIELD, approx. circa 1950's, with a carved head figure at the top and it looks like it is all hand carved from ONE PIECE OF wood! The symbology appears to be breasts since this shield would protect the warrior's breast area. The colors are very wonderful and show age and weather endurance but still very lush and vibrant. I don't find any real damage. Only time. Weather and usage age related issues like wood splits/cracks/chips and some paint fading over time to be expected. But no real damage or repair/restoration areas to my knowledge. The head might have had shell eyes but they are now missing? The back of this shield is wonderful too in that there are geometric paint patterns still visible though faded over time. ... moreThe warrior's handle is intact and firm though some caking of old earth and spider webs! No extra charge for those! Measures approx. 54" x 12" and heavy. Approx. 3- 4 lbs. Seriously great carving and paint. Museum/Gallery ASMAT War Shield Artifact from The Coastal Region of Papua. New Guinea– Lot 44 Up for auction/sale is this ASMAT WAR SHIELD from the Coastal Region of Papua. New Guinea. This primitive and unique Asmat Shield’s body is designed with'ainor' mysterious design and'bokoper' navel motifs, carved in high relief and painted with lime, red ochre and charcoal. There are holes on each side for the tassels all except for one are missing. The crowning(ancestor) of the shield is missing. It happens that the fate decrees if the carver of a shield or family member with whom the owner has close relationship dies, the owner, out of pithiness, cuts off the projecting ancestor symbol from the top of the shield. Naturally warped, back has a handle and zigzag designs. Shields are carved out of the lightweight flattened(or plank) ... morebuttress root of a mangrove tree– the root is planed to half an inch thick. Except for a protrusion left on one side for a handle. The front of the shield is carved in high relief. They include symbols of wild boar tusks or bones, flying foxes, the tails of tree kangaroos, whirlpools. Some symbols are believed to be so powerful that just by seeing these symbols, the enemy will flee in terror or be immobilized in fear. But such powerful symbols require strict rituals of appeasement. A special feast, the yamas pokumbu is held to call upon the ancestor's spirit to enter the war shields. Traditionally. Shields were carved prior to a headhunting reprisal raid, which was organized to avenge the death of the ancestor for whom the shield was named. A shield always represents an ancestor. It is named after him and the ancestor's spirit is believed to be present in the shield and make the owner fierce, powerful and invincible.
