The previous owner of this purchased it in the 60's, but I do not know how old it was at that time. This is a very big statement piece! Measures 31" tall X 16.5" wide and projects from the wall at 8" This is trimmed in woven natural reeds. Fibers and feathers and decorated with braided raffia. The wood is very sound; no cracks or chips, though it is in a very nice old, weathered condition. I'm sure it's lost some of the feathering along the way, as well as the raffia. The male figure is decorated with string from the ears, around the neck and waist and shells for eyes and the face painted white. Very finely carved. Excellent patina and age appropriate wear. The figure was purchased in a village in Papua New Guinea in 1984. There is a loop of picture wire in my photographs, which should not be there. It was used at some point to hang the figure on a wall. It is not part of the original sculpture and can be removed. Condition: Very age appropriate wear. Item's Title and Description: Two beautiful Papau New Guinea MIDDLE SEPIK RIVER masks Papau New Guinea Tribal MASK. Mandagu Manabara, Tambenum Village, Middle Sepik River Basin Mask, Mandagu Manabara, Tambenum Village, Middle Sepik River Basin. These are tribal mask of elongated oval form. The polychromed face with stylized concentric decoration around the masks, applied two big cowrie eyes. The smaller mask has the elongated feathers at the top. It also has a piece missing from the top left edge please see pics. They both have an inset cowrie shells along the edges. And on chin or beard. Both have a bird which extends out from under the nose to bottom of chins. The larger mask has a painted mouth under the bird while smaller does not. This is a wonderful betel nut mortar that was acquired by my parents on a trip down the Sepik River in the 1980's. It was purchased from a"man house" along the river. It is 7 inches high by 4 inches wide. In excellent condition. The carvings are detailed and represent art from that part of the world and the dark wood is so beautiful. Peoples throughout the Sepik region use betel nut. The fruit of the areca palm, which is chewed with lime made from burnt shells or coral and other substances to produce a mild stimulant effect. Sepik peoples create a variety of betel nut chewing accessories. The cup-like object seen here is a betel nut mortar, used by individuals who have lost their teeth to aid in chewing betel nut. Early 20th C Sepik River New Guinea Tribal Carved Wood Figural Suspension Hook
This is aN original tribal piece! The hook shows wear consistent. Dates to the 1930's and presents an ashy brown patina measuring 31 inches tall and is 6 inches wide. Suspension hooks were in use to dry and preserve meats and fish. The hook is carved in a male elongated body featuring a bird headdress ad includes some red and white pigments from the original paint. Original Sepik River Papua New Guinea Wood Native Carving - Old Man - Shell Eyes
Very old wood carving I believe is from New Guinea. Carving features earth based color pigments and shell eyes. Most likely early 20th Century. Man still stands on his own. But leans a little from age. Solid condition with no damage. A few small stable age cracks in the wood. Stands just under 14" inches tall. Any hint of green on photos is false[ camera error] All colors are brown/grey/blackish shades. Carving is clean, and has no odors. The Abelam area was part of German New Guinea(Kaiser Wilhelmsland) from 1884 to 1914-1920 when Australia was given New Guinea as well as Papua under a United Nations' protectorate. Papua New Guinea gained independence in 1975. The early German administrators recognized and appointed village leaders. They gave them special hats and insignia which are still portrayed in some Abelam carvings; however, there was no significant contact with the outside world until the 1930s when gold was discovered.
