Have a look also at my'Standing Male Figure' Here we have ... morea carved wooden Hornbill with pigment and inset bone details in the eye sockets. There are some condition issues but that is to be expected in an authentic artifact that carries considerable age. There is a crack that runs vertically along the left side of the body and the tip of the bill has been repaired/re-attached by a previous owner. I've owned this piece since he early'70's(bought in Cairns Australia) and aside from displaying it prominently in my home have done nothing to it. Measures 26" 66 cm in height. Pigments. Derived from various amalgams of charcoal, lime, ground earth, plants, burnt shells and minerals mixed with tree sap, water and clay have been applied overall. The use of colour is an important aspect of Middle and Upper Sepik River art(The Sepik River Basin being a region of PNG noted for its production of artifacts) It's believed that colouring a carving will increase the power associated with it and carvings are often decorated and re-decorated before important ceremonies. Am including with this bird a loosely woven string bag. Known throughout PNG as a'bilum' bought at the same time. Mid 20th century or earlier. Similar examples seen recently in the collection of Oceanic artifacts in the Museum of Anthropology at the University of British Columbia, in Vancouver B.C. Bilums are made throughout PNG. Traditionally. As in this example they were made with plant fibres, usinga process known as'looping' or'knotless netting. Many villagers are now finding it easier to use store bought wool and cotton and so the natural examples are relatively rare. Small. Light, strong and woven of indigenous plant fibres this example would have been tucked into a waistband and brought into the jungle to carry any fruit, birds eggs, small animals etc. collected there. You are buying the entirely handmade and hand sewn Tribal Chief Beaded Head Gear Band from the Highlands of Papua New Guinea. Once worn on the forehead during special celebrations and events and seen on all the pictures here. Chiefs and warriors wear this traditional handmade headband during a festival(which is often worn to support other decorations such as feathers, hair netting etc. Tiny Beads or Shells are handsewn on. The band was once tinted with red ochre and mud. Item was collected a couple of decades ago. It is an authentic piece obtained from a tribe in the area. You can see some warriors wearing them on the additional photos. The tribes or Irian Jaya. Indonesia and Papua New Guinea have lived in isolation for centuries due to the remoteness of their land and its difficult access. Their dress code has remained primitive for centuries. Traditionally, the men wear no other clothing apart from a penis sheath made of a cultivated gourd and known locally as a“horim” and some simple ornamentation such as string hair nets, bird of paradise feathers and necklaces with boar tusks or cowrie shells or other. On ceremonial days, it is another matter, they then use material from the surrounding jungles to create incredibly colorful and clever body adornments and costumes, as seen on the photos here as well. Up for offer is a very nicely made dance custume from the Middle Sepik region of Papua New Guinea. Overall good condition although the grass skirt is brittle and strands are falling off. The weaving is still rather tight and nicely painted in the traditional way. Approx 21"H x 20"D x 15"W. Of course. With the grass skirt you can add a bit more to the height. This is the second wonderful Papua New Guinea artifact that I am posting this week. Have a look also at my'Standing Male Figure' Here we have a carved wooden Hornbill with pigment and inset bone details in the eye sockets. There are some condition issues but that is to be expected in an authentic artifact that carries considerable age. There is a crack that runs vertically along the left side of the body and the tip of the bill has been repaired/re-attached by a previous owner. I've owned this piece since he early'70's(bought in Cairns Australia) and aside from displaying it prominently in my home have done nothing to it. Measures 26" 66 cm in height. Pigments. Derived from various amalgams of charcoal, lime, ground earth, plants, burnt shells and minerals mixed with tree sap, water and clay have been applied overall. ... moreThe use of colour is an important aspect of Middle and Upper Sepik River art(The Sepik River Basin being a region of PNG noted for its production of artifacts) It's believed that colouring a carving will increase the power associated with it and carvings are often decorated and re-decorated before important ceremonies. Am including with this bird a loosely woven string bag. Known throughout PNG as a'bilum' bought at the same time. Mid 20th century or earlier. Similar examples seen recently in the collection of Oceanic artifacts in the Museum of Anthropology at the University of British Columbia, in Vancouver B.C. Bilums are made throughout PNG. Traditionally. As in this example they were made with plant fibres, usinga process known as'looping' or'knotless netting. Many villagers are now finding it easier to use store bought wool and cotton and so the natural examples are relatively rare. Small. This original and unique bag was crafted by a local residents for their personal use and not for the tourist trade. It was obtained directly from a local outdoor market in 2008. It is made from hand-woven pandanus fiber in a design giving it strength and usability. This bag is in very good to excellent condition as it was purchased new. It is sturdy enough to use should one choose to. Karahuts are woven from hibiscus bark. twine and sennit fibre. Decorated with boar's tusks, small Nasa shells with applied ochre and charcoal paints. Karahuts are used in a number of ceremonies. During dancing they are held between the teeth using a string coming out from the back about the level of the eyes. When not being used they are hung around the neck and lie in the middle of the man's back or worn around the neck as a pectoral adornment. This particular Karahut was collected around the mid 1950s. My husband and I collected this bag over 25 years on the Sepik River in Papua New Guinea. Is probably from mid 20th century. It is hand woven of cotton cord and animal fur and very skillfully knotted. Larger than many of the bilums we saw: 19 inches across at the bottom of the bag. 14 inches. From the bottom to the top of bag. And then another 13 inches above the top of the bag for the handle. Suggested use: very colorful wall decoration. Would also be useful as a handbag. There are a few loose knots; see last photo.

It is made from hand-woven pandanus fiber in a design giving it strength and usability. This basket is in very good to excellent condition as it was purchased new. It is sturdy enough to use should one choose to. It would also make a great addition to the repertoire of any Oceanic or ethnographic art collector whether as a wall hanging or displayed in a cabinet. It measures 18" high and is 26" wide along the bottom.
