FOSSILIZED SYMPHILLIA CORAL ANIMIST MASK TIMOR TRIBAL ARTIFACT late 20thC
Fossilized Coral Mask Hane Village. Amanuban District. West Timor. Late 20th C. 7" X 7" X 3" 1.270 kg packed weight 2 kg The Island of Timor is relatively new in geological terms. The Timorese creation myth states that the island was a sleeping crocodile that rose to the surface and that the crocodile is the ancestor of all humans. In a very abstract way. The island could be interpreted as"crocodile shaped" and the present day mountains at 1500 meters above sea level fossilized coral reefs and critters from the Miocene era can be found. The Highland Atoni People practise a blend of Christianity with Animism. Animists believe that everything has a spirit or life force. Trees, rocks, wind and weather. There are no large bodies of water on the island and the Highlanders do not know how to swim at all. For them, the sea ... moreis a place of mystery, magic and danger. This sculpture made from fossilized Symphillia- brain coral 6-10 million years old. Mined at an elevation of 1000 m. It is made to be placed, to protect a person or place.
