Asmat Old Handcarved Totem Pole Headhunting Ritual Oceanic Art Irian Jaya 101A1
Item 101A1 in our inventory: Rare Older tall(5 1/2 ft) Ritual Totem Pole statue Effigy Hand Carved Art from Asmat. Irian Jaya PNG. For more information on this piece scroll down for details Rare: Asmat Totem Pole. 65" tall and 8" wide, handcarved Colors remnants on the carving were obtained with natural pigments. Comemorates Head hunting. Some of the most dramatic sculptures created by Asmat artists are these totem poles with figures. Often representing their ancestors. Usually the totem is a lattice of clambering figures such as this piece, a most powerful carving, historically associated with a ritual cycle connecting warfare, death, youth initiation and headhunting. A tribal member who is killed in an untimely death either physically or by black magic needs their spirit exhumed from limbo. The spirits inhabits trees, earth, and ... morewater. Through the use of wooden carvings. That spirit will be released into the spirit world. Thus the figures represented were clansmen crying out of revenge or returning victorious from a battle. Such as this couple, back from a head hunting raid with the head of the vanquished as a trophy, here held by the woman(who will cook and eat it with the victors) while she is standing on top of the man who is holding the spear that killed his enemy, the figures are also connected to each other by 2 hornbill bird figures and the woman is wearing a necklace made of dog teeth. This carving. Produced in the coastal region of Irian Jaya, was part of a ceremonial cycle requiring months of preparation and beginning with the selection of a mangrove tree. The tree is harvested, and brought in to the jeu to be carved. After a ceremony, the poles, created for it, were taken to the sago fields, broken up, and allowed to rot. In this way the spirit in the carving would pass to the sago trees, promoting a good harvest. After a headhunting raid and many ceremonies, balance is re-established and the souls of the dead can move to Safan. The spirit world. Headhunting ended in the 1970's, but the

An older original scarce and very long decorated Calabash Gourd or Travel Vessel with hand carved Wood Stopper as a lid representing a protective ancestor. Decorations of nassa shells all over as well as ornaments of hand woven rope twine made out of bark or other fibers: It was once used in a tribe of the Baliem valley and mountains. By a Dani man, to store liquids and travel with while in the bush. the lid represents the face of a dani ancestor. Rare and hard to find in the field, one sometimes ... morehas to hike for a few days to find such pieces) Size 23" long The Dani of the central highlands. Perhaps the best-known of the Irianese, live in communities of tidy little thatch-and-wood huts, surrounded by neatly kept gardens of sweet potato vines. Kept apart from each other for centuries by hostile terrain and long traditions of inter-tribal warfare, headhunting and cannibalism, these remote tribes has evolved an astonishing degree of cultural and linguistic diversity in spite of the isolation. Dani religion, like warfare, is based on spirit placation. Staying on the good side of the spirits was crucial for survival and prosperity. All ceremonies and pig killings were directed a winning their favor. Sacred objects, called ganekhe, which included stones which we also carry, can be manipulated to prevent the approach of spirits. Enclosures for ghosts, with bundles of grass representing the deceased, are located far from the villages. Our prices are started very low as we go straight to the source to find these treasures. We have many collector items available. Rare pieces from around the world from antique to more recent, designer accents, precious textiles and textile ha

Rare Asmat Wuramon 7 ft Spirit Soul Boat Handcarved Irian Jaya New Guinea 103A1
Item 103A1 in our inventory. Important rare and very large Asmat Wuramon Spirit boat. 82" long by 7" by 8" close to 7 feet long. Hand carved and hand painted. Some of the most dramatic sculptures created by Asmat artists are these traditional ceremonial spirit boats with hand carved figures. Long soul-ships called Wuramon( Wuramon resemble dugout canoes in their general shape but are smaller& non-functional) are a rare expression of the Asmat monumental body of art. They were(and very occasionally) made only in the northwest Asmat area. In only a few small villages. This one came from the Yamas Village. The often bottomless canoes contained human like figures crouched face downward and several symbolic animals. Such soulships were used in conjunction with initiation rituals and the lack of bottom was often attributed to ... morea war loss as it then represented the canoe of the defeated tribe. The full bottom canoes were used during young boys’ initiation ceremonies and carved to initiate the ritual ceremony unified with the mak cem ceremony. A ceremony for the initiation period of a young man entering his early manhood. These 3 dimensional boat carvings often have figures or spirit passengers of recently deceased ancestors. Bird-like figures, ambirak" or dangerous female spirits that live in rivers, yenicowut(woman from Yeni) carved turtles“Mbu” as the symbol of fertility and safety is always found in the center of the boat, crab, Enggang Bird, Black Lord Parrot can also be found on some boats and the boats will be adorned with sago palm leaves for the ceremony. It is now impossible to find a long wuramon llike this, due to the fact that these long logs have become difficult to locate. Colors: White is made from crushed and burned mussel shells and is the symbol for the upper world. Red is made from the earths mud and is the symbol for"middle world where man lives" Black symbolizing the underworld and body hair and is made from crushed charcoal.
