I recently acquired a large collection of New Guinea wood art. The owner said most were from the Sepik region. This is the last of eight interesting pieces I will be listing for sale. Spectacular Papua New Guinea bowl measuring 9 3/4" outside diameter and 7 3/8" inside diameter and standing almost 43 1/2" tall. Rare Boiken Hand carved Oceanic Wood Grub Worm Sago Bowl Papua New Guinea 60A1
The old shallow bowls that are sometimes found in the Boiken area of North East New Guinea where we located this one rarely have motifs and carved designs but this one does. And when motifs are present, the underside alone is carved with abstract curvilinear designs that are clan related in the form of a flying fox for example. Designs. In relief, are always stylized. Diameter: 11.5" Item 60A1 Some splitting due to age across the bowl and another on the edge but bowl is solid. I have seen similar bowls for up to 1.500.00 on internet, with more cracks too. Such remote and proud people have managed, in the face of continued government and missionary pressure, to maintain a culture of incredible depth and beauty and, for the most part, they still live by the same methods as have existed in their land for thousands of years. Vintage Antique PAPUA NEW GUINEA Tribal Native SEPIK MASK Hand Carved Wood ART
This native mask has a great look and lots of character. Original paint is still in place although it has rubbed off and faded in spots a little bit through the years. From looking at pictures I am pretty sure this is a Sepik River mask from Papua New Guinea. But at the same time I am not 100% sure as I picked this piece up at a higher end eclectic estate sale where there was a wide variety of pieces. I do not see any cracks or damage, besides the normal age related wear. The mask is made of wood, and has shells for eyes. Long pointed hook nose is still in good shape considering that it gets pretty thin towards the bottom. I cannot pinpoint an age on this piece, but judging from the way the original paint looks, it is pretty old. This appears to be one of the finer examples. See below for more history on these daggers. This dagger is made from the leg bone of the large flightless cassowary bird. Many daggers were supernaturally powerful objects that played important roles in male initiation and other ceremonies. Daggers and dagger-like objects were worn as personal ornaments, and many ornate examples with blunt tips may have been ceremonial objects. Daggers were fashioned primarily from the leg bones of cassowaries(large ostrich-like birds) but also, in rare instances, from the femurs of ancestors or enemies. Hand Carved Chambri Spirit Mask... Directly From the Source Papua New Guinea
This is a real deal. Authentic Chambri spirit mask carving from Papua New Guinea. I sourced it when I stayed on the Chambri people's island for a few weeks. Hard to date these pieces, but I was told it was about 30 years old when I got it in 2002. In Chambri culture(middle Sepik) spirit masks are made after the passing of a relative. No two of these masks are exactly the same. This mask was bought directly from a spirit house in the village of Kilimbit.one of three villages on a small lake island that make up the Chambri people, a tribe of around 1,000. This was no paid Sepik boat tour that stopped by a local village store.this mask came from a remote place populated by a very small ethnic group, with whom I had the honor of being their guest for over two weeks. Rare Tribal hand carved Papua New Guinea Asmat drum with Monitor skin
The Asmat are a tribal group who inhabit parts of Papua. Indonesia, in the area formerly known as the Irian Jaya province of the Merauke regency on the island of New Guinea. The Asmat are sometimes known as“tree” or“wood” people based on the origin myth in which their ancient god, Fumiripitj, carved a tree trunk into a long cylindrical drum and, when he played upon it, the drum came to life as a man. The tribe is known not only for its highly developed art of wood carving, but also for its practice of headhunting and cannibalism, which lasted well into the 20th century. This tribal drum is a detailed chanting drum that features many characteristics of the drums of the Asmat, including their use of only three colors—black, red, and white. It is carved into an hourglass shape from a single piece of dark wood, probably found in an inland region ... moreof the island. The lizard-skin head is traditionally glued to the shell with a mixture of human blood and lime, and held in place with a band of braided plant fibers. It is initially tuned by being held over hot coals or flame. In this culture, carving is men’s art; work with fibers is women’s art. The ornately carved handle depicts both man and bird shapes, all of which are decoratively wrapped with hanging twine. Symbolically, carvings of men often are shown with their elbows touching their knees to represent the fetal position, while pecking birds represent both birth origins and the practice of headhunting—a bird“pecking” off the head of a man. A beautifully hand carved piece thats unique and one of a kind. It measures 37-1/2" long x 11" wide x 5" tall. The carving of the crocodile and national bird are in reference to two respected species that inhabit the region. The warriors eyes are small shells. I purchased this item at an estate sale. The story goes that the piece was made by a local head hunter(possibly a cannibal instead) over 40 years ago as a gift to a relative who lived in New Guinea for many years. Regardless. Its carved out of one piece of wood and weighs a remarkably light five pounds. Please review the pictures and ask questions if you have them. There are some scrapes and a couple of chips including a small one on the crocs left eye.

A stunning hand carved old vintage wood ceremonial plaque or storyboard from Papua New Guinea depicting a scene from when fishermen return to the village and celebrating their catch. It was appraised to be 1900s. The plaque is relief with raised people. Buildings and animals, painted over with white stripes and the carved out parts dabbed with a subtle rust color for features and dramatic effect. Plaque was acquired at an estate auction of a collector and is in great condition for its age. There a few cracks in the back due to the age of the wood but no broken pieces. There is general age wear to the paint and the wood(as seen in photos) The original straw hook is still attached but the owner installed his own sturdier wire hook in the back for better support.
