The head with cassowary feather and quill and jobes tear attachments. Dirk Smidt states that these are a fertility symbol, and the wearer of the costume reaches from inside and touches the breast and genitals of young boys and girls in order to make them grow up quickly. Went missing in 1961: Michael Rockefeller spent his time in Netherlands New Guinea actively engaged with the culture and the art while capturing ethnographic data. In one of his letters home. He wrote: I am having a thoroughly exhausting but most exciting time here…The Asmat is like a huge puzzle with the variations in ceremony and art style forming the pieces. ... moreMy trips are enabling me to comprehend(if only in a superficial, rudimentary manner) the nature of this puzzle. On November 17. 1961, Rockefeller and Dutch anthropologist Rene Wassing were in a 40-foot dugout canoe about three miles from shore when their double pontoon boat was swamped and overturned. Their two local guides swam for help. But it was slow in coming. After drifting for some time, Rockefeller said to Wassing"I think I can make it" and swam for shore. It is estimated that the boat was twelve miles from the shore when he made the attempt to swim to safety, supporting the theory that he died from exposure, exhaustion, and/or drowning. Wassing was rescued the next day. While Rockefeller was never seen again, despite an intensive and lengthy search effort. At the time, Rockefeller's disappearance was a major world news item. Wow. What a great old estate find! Here is a primitive TRIBAL ART ASMAT. Papua New Guinea Oceanic'WAR' SHIELD, approx. circa 1950's, with a carved head figure at the top and it looks like it is all hand carved from ONE PIECE OF wood! The symbology appears to be breasts since this shield would protect the warrior's breast area. The colors are very wonderful and show age and weather endurance but still very lush and vibrant. I don't find any real damage. Only time. Weather and usage age related issues like wood splits/cracks/chips and some paint fading over time to be expected. But no real damage or repair/restoration areas to my knowledge. The head might have had shell eyes but they are now missing? The back of this shield is wonderful too in that there are geometric paint patterns still visible though faded over time. ... moreThe warrior's handle is intact and firm though some caking of old earth and spider webs!
