Papua New Guinea. Sepik River Ceremonial Cassowary Bone Dagger This is a magnificent vintage mid-century ceremonial bone dagger from the Iatmul Tribe located in the Middle Sepik River area. PNG. The modeled head, with its shell eyes, is made from clay, assorted natural materials such as tree resin and pigments, cowry shells, cassowary bird feathers, and raffia twine. This has been placed upon a polished piece of leg bone from the cassowary bird, which is a sacred totem. It is in very good used condition given it's age and use. The clay head is solid and solidly attached to the bone. There is however some minor chipping around the ears where the raffia is attached. There is also a chip off the middle of the back of the head where a raffia string may have passed through a hole for the owner to wear the dagger like a talisman. A shiny material ... moreis present which may be some type of glue and a few feathers are missing, but all things considered, the piece is in very nice shape. See the photo details. Up for auction is a wonderful Papua New Guinea carved wood standing male figure. Bought by me from an ethnographic art dealer in Cairns. Australia in 1973. At the time I was an anthropology graduate who sincerely thought she'd one day be the next Margaret Mead.but'real' life intervened and my dreams of spending years amongst the indigenous tribals on PNG remained just'dreams' This well endowed figure has. For obvious reasons, been quite the conversation piece over the years. Aside from the'wink, wink, nudge, nudge aspects' he is a legitimate ethnographic artifact. Stands 34.5" 88 cm. from the base under his curled toes to the top of his head-dress with attached cassowary feathers. Beautifully carved. Note especially the'double' face in the head-dress. The polychrome/pigment detail, the raffia in the ... moreears,the well carved flaring nostrils, eyes with inset cowrie shell and woven plant fibre partial skirt tied around his waist. The greatest concentration of significant art produced in the South Pacific Islands is found on Papua New Guinea. Particularly in the Sepik, Yuat, Karawari and Ramu River regions. A staggering 800 different languages are spoken by the approx. 3 million people living in these areas, characterised by an almost constant state of tribal'agitation' Carvings such as this one serve important cultural needs as they express complex ideological beliefs through stylised human and animal forms.
