TIMOR CARVED GOAT BONE LIME-BETEL NUT CONTAINER LIZARD & HUMAN FACE
This carving is made of goat bone and intended for use as a container for lime which the natives utilize when chewing betel nut. It has its marrow hollowed out. Of course. They daub some lime into their mouths as they chew the nut, resulting apparently in a bit of stimulation.and eventually less than attractive darkened teeth. This example is in fine condition, having the images of 5 abstracted lizards on the bottom portion and a human face on the top. The top fits into the bottom due to the hard wood plug which is a bit loose fitting. The base is also plugged on the bottom to hold the lime in place. Offered is a very old Indonesian Timor lime container. Used along with the Betel leaf or nut and chewed for psychoactive or stimulant purposes. There is still evidence of the lime on this container. It is made of bamboo, and is intricately carved on the outside surface, it remarkably beautiful. RARE! Antique Indonesian Timor Betel Nut Wood Bird Man and Bone Container
This is an amazing(and very old) Indonesian Timor lime container. You can still see a slight residue of lime inside of it. The dark wood head is of a bird(a Macaw) with a man's face. Bone inset eyes and an engraved bone body. The wood of the body is different than the head. The arms and legs and tail are attached with pegs and move. This is meant to sit. Not stand. I boxed it up before measuring it but, as I recall, in its sitting position it is 17" tall. It is a fascinating piece! Comes from a smoke-free home.

Called"lit sushu" Lit Sushu is a very pale, light wood when freshly cut that matures to a dull light brown over time.
