Late 20th C TRIBAL ARTIFACT The body of this betel container from the Highland Atoni region of West Timor is carved from one piece of wood using the most rudimentary of tools. The fit is loose and there is geometric detailing carved into the body. The artifact is in very good condition. Lime containers are highly personal items from a communal setting. Geometric detailing is the most common and then animal or plant motifs. Storyboard" motifs with human likenesses are the rarest. This container combines geometric motifs with portraits in shallow relief. The patina is uneven and mature. The walls are very thin and finely finished. The writing on the end is"yes" in deep relief and the letter"K" The other end shows a man and a woman in relief with red pigment. TRADITIONAL TRIBAL The body of this mid 20th C lime container is carved from one solid block of wood. Called"lit sushu" Lit Sushu is a very pale, light wood when freshly cut that matures to a dull light brown over time. The bottom of the container is in two parts, the collar can be removed and the bottom has totemic symbols etched into the surface.
