Bontoc headhunter armband"Tangkil" c.a 1920. 4 boar's tusk connected with woven rattan and accented with wild boar's hair made it a ... morevery fine example of a very old and very rare bontoc tribal ornament. This armband is worn only by a succesful Bontoc Headhunter" A museum quality artifact that would certainly add worth to your collections! Dimensions: H- 5 in. D- 3.5 in. For the Bontoc the tangkil was almost exclusively connected with headhunting ceremonies. Dances and sacrifices. As in the crocodile or boar's tusk necklace, called Boaya, which the Bontoc warrior wore together with the pair of tangkil, the use of boar's tusks was reputed to impart some sort of sympathetic magic. The tusks empowered the wearer with the strength, speed, endurance and ferocity of a wild boar. The Bontoc headhunter. In full regalia, created the vision of half-man, half-wild animal. A complete ceremonial outfit would include the boar's tusk armlets decorated with tassels of human/boar hair, a boar's tusk necklace, strings of agate beads- all against a backdrop of tattooed skin. Feathered plumes and fresh wild flowers were worn on the head and head axes were stuck into ceremonial G-strings. So dressed, the warrior, dancing to the mesmerizing beat of the gong, embodied the mythic, supernatural creature that would take an enemy head and bring it back triumphantly to his village. antique old 1800s Bontoc Austronesian Igorot tribal headhunters SHIELD artifact
Appears to be a genuine Igorot or Bortoc headhunters shield from the 1800s. I would say the condition is fair. Fully functional but does have a few cracks in the wood one crack is several inches long and may have been stained as I can see a few runs on the back side. Also has had a little bit of small worm holes. The worm holes are very small in diameter and are mostly only on the side edges. Has a lizard carved on the front. I've only seen one of these that has a lizard on it online and I think it sold for $3600. Please let me know if you have any info on this as I have not had it appraised YET but I hope to very soon! I will plastic wrap this and pack in peanuts and make a wood box for this to ship in and also pay for all the insurance. It will ship out FedEx Ground within 3 days from purchase. ANTIQUE BONTOC PHILIPPINE TRIBAL HANDWOVEN ETHNIC RATAN KUPIT BASKET -MAN PURSE
Click Here. Double your traffic. Get Vendio Gallery- Now FREE! Ifugao. Meaning the people of The Hill, is a landlocked province of he Philippines in the province of Luzon. Their ancestors constructed fascinating rice terraces. These mountain tribes are still famous for their specific cultural expressions and their skills. They have skills in making many different kinds of baskets for their every day use. The cultivation of rice is very important to the ifugao and several of the baskets are related to the collection/ storage/serving and eating of rice and the collection of fish/shell fish. there is a theory that these storage jars derive their shapes from Chinese ceramic vessels that would have been imported to that region. They are beautifully and intricately woven with unique designs. I am not an authority so please bear with my lack of ... moreknowledge. There are different names for each kind of basket such as the Ulbung/tupil/kayabank/agawen etc. I have just received this clarification by another ebayer. Just wanted to let you know that this basket is not Ifugao. Rather it is Bontoc. This elaborate, purse-like style of basket is called a'kupit' and is used by Bontoc men for carrying personal things like tobacco and small wealth items. Plaited kupits like yours typically have two or three separate pieces; two piece wooden variations also exist. Both forms are worn suspended by an over the shoulder cord/strap, but for some reason it's rare to see them offered with their carrying cords/straps. In my description I went by what I was told when this was acquired. This is one such Antique basket– a most unusual shape with the lid also different from any I have seen before. Beautifully woven- great detail with a unique design and shape. I do not know what exactly this basket may have been used for– I was told it was a fisherman's box. Not sure, perhaps some one more knowledgeable could be of help. Of Vintage age has been in the Family collection for a long time. Being sold“As Is” Some of the photographs sent
Bontoc Igorot Status Symbol Waist Ornament "FIKUM" Philippine Tribal Art
Rare early 20th century(Fikum or Tikam) Bontoc status symbol waist ornament The Fikum or Tikam is a large engraved gold lipped oyster shell worn somewhere at the waist. In front or one of the sides by upper class men of the head hunting Bontoc tribe of the Northern Luzon, Philippines. The shell was decorated around the edge with incised geometric designs reminiscent of textile and tattoo patterns. Like the stunning shell necklace of the Ifugao's in Mayaoyao this is its counterpart- a high status symbol ornament which is only owned by a few men of the Bontoc tribe and usually reserved for special occasions. Bontoc headhunter armband "Tangkil" - Igorot Luzon Philippines antique boar tusk
Bontoc headhunter armband"Tangkil" c.a 1920. 4 boar's tusk connected with woven rattan and accented with wild boar's hair made it a very fine example of a very old and very rare bontoc tribal ornament. In full regalia, ... morecreated the vision of half-man, half-wild animal.
