Fashioned from a large vegetal gourd. And elaborately decorated with a fringe of cassowary and brightly coloured parrot feathers, cut out eyes, mouth and nose. The pierced ears with bush fiber earrings, while the solid brow has traces of shell inlay set in resin. The top suspension lug, and crocodile head protruding from the chin used to attach the mask to the dancers costume both exhibit extensive wear. The pouted mouth and eyes are carved through. Papua New Guinea, Iatmul people's Mei house mask, made of light with pigment decoration, well carved face, inset eyes and elongated stylized nose terminating on a serpent's head. Deep brown patina attesting to years of use, age estimate early 20th. Very good condition, minor insect bites. Height is 61cm/ 24in. Mei masks represent mythical ancestor brother and sister spirits. This fine mask was collected in New Guinea and brought back to Australia in the 1950's. It has been carved from hardwood and decorated with pigments. Various shells and clay, attachments to the ears and perimeter and a real nose bone through the septum. It an aged feel with subdued pigments and some loss to the clay and shells. Deeply carved design.A small amount of damage as shown in pic 4. and a few age cracks which are stable.The mask displays very well. This fine mask was collected by Ron Perry on his first trip to New Guinea in late 1964. It originates from the Iatmul who live in the Middle Sepik and depicts a female ancestor. It is carved from hardwood and has attached shells. Tusks, native fibre, clay and ochres. It is in excellent condition for it's age and measures 72cm x 28cm and weighs approx 4.3kgs. From The Metropolitan Museum of Art: Mask(Baba Tagwa) Date: mid-20th century. Geography: Papua New Guinea. Prince Alexander Mountains, Middle Sepik River region. Culture: Abelam people. Medium: Fiber. Paint. Dimensions: Classification: Basketry-Sculpture. The Abelam and neighboring peoples of the Prince Alexander Mountains in the Sepik region of northeast New Guinea create several types of basketry masks. They include the type seen here. Known in the Abelam language as baba tagwa, which is worn over the head like a helmet, as well as tje yam masks used to decorate the gigantic long yams grown and exchanged competitively by Abelam men. Among the Abelam, baba tagwa masks are associated ... morewith the male initiation cycle, in which they are worn by men clad in shaggy costumes made from strips of leaves. During certain ceremonies, these imposing masked figures serve as guards. Brandishing lengths of bamboo or other weapons, the baba tagwa drive off women, children, and uninitiated men, who are not permitted to witness the secret initiation rites. From: Yam masks and Baba masks: ritual masks from Papua New-Guinea The Abelam people(app. 40.000 souls) live on the forested plains in northern Papua New Guinea. They link spiritual well-being and material survival in one cosmology. Which focuses in part on their staple vegetable crop: yams. At harvest they decorate large yams which can grow to two and three metres long. The decorated yams are displayed publicly and are exchanged between men. When decorated. The yams represent ancestral spirits called Nggwal. Nggwal spirits do not act by themselves. But must be encouraged with offerings, chants and decorations.
