Nicely Carved Wooden Pestle or club w/ Aviary Heads from Papua New Guinea ~ PNG
This is a rare wooden pestle. Or perhaps a club, from Papua New Guinea. This piece has at it's top two nicely carved aviary heads with large eyes. Above, below, and between these two heads is more intricate carving. This piece of wood piece has a few cracks in it from age as well as a couple of pieces broken off above the heads. There is a nail located at the very top that is likely not added to the piece, but part of it. The end of the pestle is flat and this piece stands on it's own. This piece measures 11" x 2" and would make a great addition to any collection of PNG at and artifacts. International buyers will pay full cost of shipping. Here we have for you a great vintage piece from the highlands of Papua New Guinea. Its a native hand carved wooden headrest/pillow. It has a face carved in the centre and ornate carvings throughout. Horinm, penis gourd or penis sheath is a phallocrypt or phallocarp traditionally worn by native male inhabitants of some(mainly highland) ethnic groups in New Guinea to cover their genitals. They are normally made from a dried out gourd. They are held in place by a small loop of fiber attached to the base of the koteka and placed around the scrotum. There is a secondary loop placed ... morearound the chest or abdomen and attached to the main body of the koteka. Men choose kotekas similar to ones worn by other men in their cultural group.

This is a finely carved bowl from Woodlark Island in the Milne Bay Province of New Guinea. It was collected by Klaus Pinker a German born architect and actor working in New Guinea from 1965-75. Klaus acted in the Australian TV series'Homicide' and'Hunter' in the early 1960's and was well known in New Guinea establishing his own theatre company in Port Moresby. The bowl is in excellent condition and measures 64cm x 28cm. Registered Post within Australia will cost between $14US and $20US dependant on the postcode. New Guinea Crocodile Sepik River Wooden Carved Board This authentic carved crocodile was hand crafted in New Guinea's Sepik region. Crocodiles feature prominently in the legends and rites of passage of various Sepik tribes. Stories may vary from village to village. But there is a shared belief in ancestral ties to the crocodiles and a practice of ritual scarring of initiated men that emulates crocodile skin. The carving came to the Silicon Valley Historical Association through the estate of the Berta Wright Gallery Shop in Tucson. Arizona, that closed in the late 1990s. The Berta Wright shops had fine art from around the world ~ and a lot of her things ended up in the Tucson Museum of Art. This crocodile carving is in very good condition ~ with no chips or cracks. New Guinea Sepik River Wooden Carved Board This authentic carved cult board was hand crafted in New Guinea's Sepik region. These boards and carvings were used to decorate the men's houses. Used during boys' initiations and generally used to ward off enemy spirits and keep the people safe. This carving measures 39" tall. 6.5" wide and 3/4" thick.
