A hard wood knobbed club with woven belt from Vanuatu. New Hebrides. Dark hard wood with deep dark rich patina. Ex Joseph O'leary, ex Preparator collections, ... moreHarvard Peabody Museum, Essex. One of the knobs on the striking end appears to have been broken off(see photo 5) else great condition. The knob missing really isn't noticable unless you look close since there still is some of the base left. L 25 1/2" x W 2 1/2" These are very rare museum objects when they have the belts included. Seldom offered for sale. Based on patina and style I would date this between 1890-1920.

A nineteenth century stone-carved Australian Aboriginal throwing club in a form doesn't conform to any other Australian examples I've found. It has a ... moreround head that becomes slightly elliptical in cross-section as it moves toward the shaft, below which is a 5" long, slightly elliptical, scratch-roughened gripping surface, with an almost-oval elliptical shape, thusly (), for the remainder of the shaft. It measures 29 5/8" long by 1 3/4" in diameter at the fattest point of the head. The wood is a very dense closed-pore hardwood similar to that found in identified Aboriginal clubs and boomerangs I have owned. It has an old, appealing, untouched surface, with much of the marks left by the stone carving process remaining. There are a few tight age cracks, but no other condition issues.

South Eastern Aboriginal club 19th Century
Chipped around the striking edge. 19th Century. 2ft long, 4" at the widest point.
Aboriginal club Queensland 19th century Bâton Palo Knüppel
This is an absolutely sublime south western Queensland throwing club. The shaft has fine grooves running from the bulbous top to the bottom point. There is a very small section of crosshatching at the bottom. Much less than normal, possibly an earlier style or it could be regional. Made from hardwoood. This club is mid 19th century at a minimum, but possibly older. Fantastic deep dark redish patina, and a wavy surface as it was carved using stone and shell. There is a tiny tiny chip on one side of the tip. This is as good as it gets for this type of club I think. An incredibly handsome club. 67cm(26 1/2in) stand not included Any questions please email me. Thank you Club 430gm- Packaging 470gm- Total 900gm Post is cheapest to UK. Aboriginal club South Australia 19th century Bâton Palo Knüppel
This is a wonderful old throwing club from Southeast Australia. See Aboriginal Australia'S75' pg 95 for an almost identical example. The shaft is smooth with three sections of'cross hatch' pattern. Made from a heavy hardwood with the typical two tone wood you see in clubs from this region. Only the patina has darkened it so it is only visible under bright light. I think there is a good chance this club is late 19th century running up to the first quarter of the 20th century. Fantastic deep dark redish patina. Th e tip of the handle end has broken off. +/ 5mm, as you can see in the 2nd image. A n incredibly handsome club. The handle is wrapped with striped bands of braided plant fiber, braided plant fiber intertwined with red and green trade wool, and a shiny, very dark brown- black animal hair or hair-like plant fiber. There are also about 28 very tiny(1 mm) glass seed beads woven in towards the middle of the handle, some almost hidden by the braided cord. I don't know the significance of these beads. ... moreThe club shows much wear from tribal use and has a fine old patina. It is made of a very hard and heavy wood and is relatively thick. Unlike the later 19th century and 20th century examples. AGE: Early to mid 19th century. CONDITION: Good ethnographically-used condition. Antique Tribal Fijian Bowei Club - 19th Century
A fascinating. Arresting and highly decorative antique Fijian hardwood war club. Carved from a beautiful piece of age soaked Vesi wood. This artefact has an attractive dark glossy patina. With a long handle broadening into the head, the top half is encircled in a decorative chevron motif known as tavatava; said to represent traditional Fijian tattoos. The contrast between the destructive power of this weapon and its sleek. Natural beauty is highly striking. Beneath the tavatava pattern is a series of incised letters bearing the name: EPAKUKI" Almost certainly the name of the owner of this potent weapon. Though other examples are known, inscriptions such as this remain rare, providing a sense of depth and connection to the artefact that is not often found. Of all the Polynesian people. The Fijians were the most prolific club makers and ... moreare widely recognized as masters of their art. Producing a number of different forms, a warrior would chose a club that suited his stature and natural movements, using different weapons for different purposes.Bowei such as this were thought to be embued with their own special powers, and would have been carried into battle to be used as a close quarters weapon, wielded in such a way that the the club would smash through bone. A brutal yet facinating artefact. It is rare to find pieces of this type with inscriptions on the private market. Length: 28 3/4 inches. Condition: Very good. Mid 19th Century Maori Kotiate Hand Club
On offer is a lovely Maori Kotiate. Kotiate means to cut or divide the liver(koti = cut in two or divide; ate = liver) Is probably taken from its shape, which resembles the lobed part of the human liver. This handclub was collected by a British officer during the Maori Land Wars of the mid 19th century and subsequently brought to England. I acquired the club from a small provincial auction in England several years ago. The auction house had no idea what it was but told me that the consigner said it was brought from New Zealand by their relative who fought in the Maori Land Wars. The club is crafted from a very tight grained wood and is a medium hardwood. The carving is exquisite and the original Paua shell eyes are all still in place. This appears to be a ceremonial club as the fighting clubs are generally less carved. The carving is on both ... moresides and there is a nice tiki head on the distal end. The club is 12.5" long and 5" wide at it's widest. It's a very nice specimen and I'm reluctant to sell but need to for various reasons. Kotiate can sell for 6 figures these days in the Paris auctions and while this isn't a 6 figure club it is certainly a worthy and authentic specimen. The Auckland Museum in New Zealand houses several Kotiate with similar tiki faces although I've never seen one with the transversely opposed faces. Please contact me with any questions or to request additional photos. I will ship worldwide but please don't pay for item until we agree a shipping price. I will ship at cost by whatever method you choose.

Aboriginal Club late 19th century South East Australian
Aboriginal Club late 19th century South East Australian SIZE: 67cm x 4 cm This South Eastern club is from Victoria and from the late 19th century with burnt design. It is most likely from Corenderrk Mission which is another sad chapter in our early Australian history and treatment of Aboriginals. The following is an extract from Wikipeadia on the history of Coranderrk which is worth taking the time to read. In February 1859 some Wurundjeri elders. Led by Simon Wonga(aged 35) and brother Tommy Munnering(aged 24) petitioned Protector William Thomas to secure land for the Kulin at the junction of the Acheron and Goulburn rivers. Initial representations to the Victorian Government were positive, however the intervention of the most powerful squatter in Victoria, Hugh Glass, resulted in their removal to a colder site, Mohican Station, which was ... morenot suitable for agricultural land and had to be abandoned.4]5] In March 1863 after three years of upheaval. The surviving leaders, among them Simon Wonga and William Barak, led forty Wurundjeri, Taungurong(Goulburn River) and Bun warrung people over the Black Spur and squatted on a traditional camping site on Badger Creek near Healesville and requested ownership of the site. They were anxious to have the land officially approved so that they could move down and establish themselves. An area of 9.6 km² was gazetted on 30 June 1863, and called'Coranderrk' at the Aboriginal people’s suggestion. This was the name they used for the Christmas Bush(Prostanthera lasianthos) a white flowering summer plant which is indigenous to the area. 19th century Fijian Ula Tavatava War Club
This is a mid 19th century Fijian Ula Tavatava. It is in good condition. My great(x4) uncle was a sailor and brought it to the US straight from Fiji. The handle designs are quite worn. Indicating that this club was used a lot. Under the head are many dots which are a tally system, probably representing some sort of ceremonial or social events. This Ula will make a great addition to your collection.

19th Century Queensland Aboriginal fluted throwing club
19th Century Queensland Aboriginal fluted throwing club SIZE: 68cm x 4cm This is an early Queensland throwing club used in hand to hand combat. It is one of the best examples I have come across because of the deep well incised handgrip and very fine fluting. Usually a large section of the tip is broken off as you would expect from a throwing club however this has only the smallest amount missing so it does not detract from the beautifully tapering shape FREIGHT: The purchaser is to pay the cost of shipping and handling. Fijian Kiakavo dina wood dance club, 19th century, nice old dark brown finish
On the basis of the form and smaller size. Clunie(1977) regards these'spurred' clubs as dance and ceremonial clubs. This example is 30 inches in length and well formed by hand work. An dark old finish shows cracking from contraction and is worn away in areas showing moderately dark wood. The shape is typical for the form, with the main body gently arching forward. The far end has a raised ridge in the midline that shows only very slight chipping. The forward surface has roughly incised decoration. A raised comb is present at the fork from which the spur arises. A few pinprick holes are present along the shaft and there is a band of roughness of the old finish.
